Avowed Releases as a Global Top Seller on Steam

ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

Avowed has climbed the charts to become Steam’s number-one-selling game globally.

Avowed reached Steam’s Top Seller list four days before its full release, becoming America’s number-one-selling game on Steam. Now, spotted by Gameranx, an X post by Aaron Greenberg, VP of Games Marketing at Microsoft, reveals Obsidian has clinched the top spot in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, and more, making the game the number one selling game globally on the platform.

Avowed’s becoming a global top seller on Steam is an exciting achievement for Obsidian, considering the game is available for free through Game Pass. If players head over to SteamDB, they will see that Obsidian’s new action RPG is topping the charts for ‘Trending Games’ and ‘Popular Releases’, too. Avowed peaked at 17,171 players on Steam on its launch day.

For those wondering, Avowed is Obsidian’s latest fantasy action RPG, which takes players to Eora’s mysterious world, first seen in the Pillars of Eternity franchise. You enter the Living Lands, an island filled with ancient magic and many mysterious secrets. Your decisions here will shape the fates of the inhabitants of this world. You will also face off against some nasty foes, but don’t worry; your arsenal is filled with swords, spells, guns, and shields, and your trusty grimoire will get you out of any sticky situations.

That lasted long. But it did manage to win a day where no other AAA game launched so I guess it's doing fantastic!

That lasted long.
I'm not even sure it happened at any point, because I've seen headlines about the game being "first" on Steam since yesterday and every time someone commenting/posting pictures to prove them wrong.
P.S. Also, the usual Asmogold clip on the same topic few hours ago. Same thing.

How is the game top seller and have only 17000 players peak? Do people buy games and dont play them? Weird
Well what competition is there? To be #1 top seller for it's launch day it only needed to have better sales than Day 15 for KCD2 or Day 8 for Civ 7, and obviously sales are heavily weighted to launch day. If you're the only AAA game release on a day then not being the #1 top seller would be pretty horrific.

In terms of the week overall it was 4th for Non-F2P titles. So KCD2's third week was stronger than Avowed's launch.

People need to start understanding that positional rankings on sales charts don't necessarily equate to high sales.

You can be #1 on Steam and sell 2 million copies in a week or you could be #1 on Steam for a day and probably sell only 100K units.

It's all relative and as you can see Avowed has already dropped quickly. By the end of the month, i.e. the end of next week, I bet it isn't even in the top 20.

Veilguard was charting high for a full week and it barely made 2 millions on all platforms, yeah.

There was a similar discussion about Veilguard as it was also a global top seller for a few days

If I remember correctly, Steam top seller charts are based on products (full releases and in-game transactions) sold during last 24 hour and new releases usually generate more sales in its launch days. So a better question is if the game will stay on that list for longer

100% this. Avowed could have sold 100,000 copies on launch day and still be #1 on Steam. It really doesn't tell us much. CCU is definitely the better measurement

I think Avowed is doing fine for it's budget. It doesn't seem like a massive success or a failure. Which doesn't excite anyone. That's why everybody is trying to find narratives that align with their beliefs

It was never the global top seller on Steam, only in specific countries (the UK and US I believe).

Its his job to try and hype literally any game they produce, he is an overpaid cheerleader

Even going to any basketball game your team can be down 50 and the cheerleaders still pretend like its close

Not many people would say no to that kind of paycheck to hype mid products

I think his job would involve more than just cheerleading games; it would actually be about trying to sell them.

Put the entire Avowed Studio on Elder Scrolls 6. That title needs to be special or everyone is performing lewd acts for money at gas stations.
