Avowed | Review Thread

I wish Obsidian took the time to make one great fantasy RPG, instead of splitting their developers between The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed. I'm sure both games will be fun, but I doubt I would buy either of them day 1 if they weren't on Gamepass

Poster who said he will spend time trolling every Avowed thread thinks positive reviews are fishy.

Really had a much better time than I expected despite its simplicity
Haven't been able to watch your review yet, would you say it's the same vibe as Outer Worlds in a different setting or does it feel different?
I don't mind simplicity but I got bored with Outer Worlds after a few hours and could never really bother to finish it.

After Vielguard I don't trust a single review score and have to automatically dock 2 points for various reasons.

Taking that into account it sounds like it's just above average. 6/10

Won't be going anywhere near it.

I'm watching Mattys review and the graphics look abysmal.

These days I just disregard any review that doesn't even mention controversy. If there's a culture war controversy surrounding the game and it's well known (like Veilguard) and they don't even mention it, I just disregard them because I can't really trust their opinion at that point due to how saturated with activists gaming journalism is these days.

I have high expectations for Obsidian. Hearing that it's essentially disposable entertainment for a subscription service is not good.
I mean, that describes almost every "Gamepass Day 1" release.

"Not great, not terrible" collection:
  • Starfield
  • Senua 2
  • Pentiment
  • As dusk falls
  • Halo infinite
  • Forza Motorsport
  • FH5 - it's fine, just been the same game since FH3
Indiana Jones is the one standout they've had in the last 2 years, and even that is just a fun romp you finish and probably never play again

The (Open massive fuckin air quotes!) Man (Close massive fuckin air quotes!) from eurogamer who gave veilguard 5 stars, gave this a 4. Avoid for me.

A bit disappointing to be honest. Doesn't appear to be a bad game, but not really something that memorable either.

Dammit. 80 Metacritic is like the worst possible score.

I wanted it to either be a kickass game that shows Obsidian still has it, or else a total dumpster fire that I can laugh at.

"Pretty good, on par with Outer Worlds" is the most disappointing outcome.

- World is lifeless, npcs are static and dont move around
- Dungeons are boring and repetitive
- Zone 3/4 there is a powerlevel jump and enemies become pretty annoying to fight
- Drop in quality in the later half of the game like Outer Worlds
- Mundane dialogues
- AI enemy types are repetitive and simplistic

pufff lol

I'm listening to MattyP talk about this now. Says NPCs are stapled to the ground. Bizarre.

Same here I am listening to it as we speak. He is roasting the game lol

And again, companions have the good guys character syndrome where if you choose to do evil things their attitude doesn't change. Man fuck that noise

So its actually good? People saying its jank were baited by clickbait? Who would have thought
Everything gets "good enough" if you are willing to lower your standards a bit and apparently some people here are wiping the floor with theirs.

Back to the point (the reviews) I was watching the ACG one.
While he was mildly praising the game he was also showing almost exclusively stuff I didn't like.
I don't know exactly what it is, but this game has one of the most repulsive aesthetic I've ever seen in my taste.
The obnoxious spell effects, the overbearing and omni-present UI, the icons above your enemies' heads. Everything about this game is UGLY to me... And I can't honestly say I'm spotting gameplay mechanics that "make up for it".

Very much Outer Worlds style. They even explained that a long time ago about say NPC's and scheduling. However combat is a huge step up in flexibility and use. Some odd systems here or there. Also movement is improved a great deal from that.
Its a solid title with some great parts and some odd choices. Which for many will mean TERRIBLE or AMAZING. For me it meant that Avowed has some great parts and some odd choices lol.

Port? It's releasing Day One on PC. It's literally half the reviews. Also, it would score lower including the PC reviews at this point.

If the Xbox version was good but the PC version was full of game breaking bugs that dragged down the score, would that be a fair reflection of the Xbox version?

Seems decent. Scores lower than I expected (expected mid to upper 80's, first time in a long time they haven't landed where I expected.), but I trust obsidian. I've really enjoyed almost everything they've done.

Not gonna play Avowed, but I disagree.
75-85 are the best games.
85+ are designed to cater to reviewers.
I'm not a reviewer, and I like what I like.

Mattyp is talking about the dialogue being word salads. Which makes sense. Pillars 1 was full of word salad novels.

So which score do you use for multiplatform games in 4-5 different places? Just stupid to remove those reviews from a score.
