Hmm. Wukong was at 2mil concurrent on day one, and by day 2 had sold 8mil units.
So extrapolating out, it can’t have sold more than 500k units on pc at launch (including , it’s already down to 5th top selling, so it’s not gaining substantial new sales already).
For some games 80k concurrent would be amazing, but for this I can’t see how it will come close to profitable, and I imagine the execs are in panic mode.
This is a $200-250mil game. It’s been in dev for 9 years, by a very big (headcount) studio. They also pulled in their mass effect team to also work on it. There’s just getting around that it’s in that range. A range that’s also quite public knowledge as being the ballpark for big AAA western titles in 2024.
a 200 mil budget would need about 6mil sales just to break even, and the steam numbers (nor its current trajectory) just aren’t suggesting sales of that level.
That’s also excluding marketing costs, and this has been marketed heavily. So what? Another 100+ mil?
It’s obviously not the scale of disaster of something like concord, but is more akin to something like guardians of the galaxy.
Theyve alienated too many customers, but even then, it’s more a symptom of studios simply spending far far too much money. When it gets to the point of needing best part of 10mil sales to have a positive ROI, you’ve fucked up imo.
