Emmanuel Macron refuses any renegociations of the Paris accord

No seriously though, how hard is it to learn French? I've already gotten Chinese down so now it's either French or German.

If you got Chinese down, I can't imagine French would be that hard for you. They aren't similar, but Chinese is a pretty complex and hard to learn language I think.

Learning French is easier than Chinese if you already know English since they're both Indo-European and English takes a huge amount from French.

Crazy how the most powerful allies who liberated the world of the nazi scum are now the biggest assholes and Germany the most powerful voice of reason and progress with France and Canada leading the way.

The part about never turning their back on America is particularly important. Without the French, there would most likely not be an America. Funny how easy people forget that.

Mostly because of the glamorized pop-culture "lessons" we get about WWII - the French surrendered, which is all they've ever done. Also, we Americans were 100% the good guys.

If you managed to learn chinese, French wouldn't be too hard.
May the Force be with you > Que la Force soit avec toi. You see, same structure !
That's all you need to know !

That's actually a bad example. It's a bit harder than this :p

I did Duolingo, which took about 8 months, and then I read a couple of kids books and started reading the news in French, and I can understand the news perfectly (I understood every word in the article in the OP). I still suck at reading regular books, but I'm learning. It took about a year and a half to get to this level.

Easier than Chinese I'm sure. But that might be my biased, eurocentric (and uh, francophone) self speaking. Maybe about the same as learning German?

It's probably easier to learn than English.
Nah, not this. I say this as a native French speaker. French has more complicated sentence structures, arbitrary gendered nouns, and tons of grammatical exceptions compared to English. Its pronunciation is generally more consistent though.

Wow, that's impressive, I guess Duolingo does work pretty well!

Yeah. Even more annoying is that people forget WHY the French did not want to fight another war on their home turf: WWI devastated them.

I'd strongly consider immigration if I wouldn't end up taking a big salary cut. I think i managed to choose a career that is pretty much only paid well in the US.

To be fair, wouldn't a salary cut be accompanied by guaranteed healthcare, basic services, etc?

I do wonder if they have a need for middle management university administrators for admissions..... :/

Edit: Oh I generally hear that English is very difficult to learn due to our arcane rules and exceptions. News to me that French is more difficult.

That's why I'm always angry and heartbroken when I hear or read shit like "french are cowards" etc. Almost everybody died in WWI.

I'd love to be able to use my Master's degree somewhere and do some research again. Having an Environmental Science/Chemistry degree during the Trump presidency has been (putting it mildly) a horrific experience and it hasn't even been 6 months yet.

I'm not really sure I'd count myself among the best or the brightest though, especially since I haven't done any real professional work in my field in years. Ce la vi. I'll stay here and wish for the sanctions and the price increases, a lot of people aren't going to care until they see immediate and personal ramifications.

I hope this inspires other leaders to just diss Trump. Hell, if Trump continues to shit the bed on policy, it might become the G6

Yeah, unfortunately this is common. My friend is a French PhD cancer researcher at MD Anderson and as much as he loves his home country, he can't move back because he would literally make a small fraction of money in France compared to America. He's just working here and saving up to retire wealthy in France. I would also take a pay cut to go there, which is hard to justify because I have good benefits here and I have to pay my student loans.

Macron is inviting scientists and engineers but many are making over $100,000/year in the USA, sometimes with lower taxes compared to France. France should put their money where their mouth is and offer competitive relocation and subsidy benefits to STEM career professionals if they're m serious about attracting them there long-term.

Fuck that. Canada has dibs on American brain drain

I'd love to check out France, but I'm not in the fields they're looking for, and I suck at languages.

France was basically America's first friend, right? Good on you Macron.

German structure will be more familiar. French isn't too bad, and it'd make Spanish easier to learn afterwards. Probably.

I know a good deal of Spanish so the duolingo app French which i just started is rather intuitive but god damn is it pronounced in ways that are baffling to me. Maybe I can just write everything down to have convos lol

Macron is the man.

Trump wants a better deal for climate change? A better deal with the fate of humanity as a bargain? Nah.

France, y'all picked a good one

I don't know much about Macron, but after everything in last weeks, France restored a bit of faith in humanity for me, especially this guy.

Makes me happy I studied French for 4 years and kept up a bit. This guy is the real alpha, not TinyHands Trump. We need a light in the darkness of stupidity.

Why do I suddenly feel more French than American right now?. Macron is also outdoing Comrade Orange on being a strong man. Calling out Putin to his face, the handshake, and now this.

Its so refreshing to see one of our allies actively giving Trump the middle finger instead of trying to be polite as possible for the sake of appearances.

He hasn't earned the rest of the world's respect and he's a fucking danger to it.

More of this please from other nations. Let him know he's not wanted and they're going to call his bullshit exactly as they see it.

The current president of the US really does not deserve the title of 'leader of the free world'.

This title is just automatically handed to every new US president - but at what point is that title truly lost?

And having the biggest military shouldn't get this title handed to you either. It has to be more about vision, direction and example.

Trump is undoing the US standing in the world that has been earned over many decades.

You can't be serious.
Native English speakers in America are frequently told by non-natives that our language has too many cryptic exceptions and that many other languages are easier with more consistent rules. You've never encountered this belief before?
Weren't people concerned Macron was too centrist? Lol.
Only republicans have succeeded in making global warming this partisan. Countries with functional government rarely shun science as liberal propoganda

Damn, you're right. I didn't even think of that. That makes this all even better. France was there to help the founders and colonists, and they're here now
In 1778, France recognized the United States of America as a sovereign nation, signed a military alliance, and went to war with Britain.

They were also one of the first people to come out and say they had our backs after 9/11.

They like us a lot, they just wish our leadership wasn't such a colossal fuck up. And hence we have common ground.
