People seem to be confusing difficulty with quality. The game isn't out to be a Souls title, at least on initial playthroughs. Rattle off any action RPG released that's not a Souls game and they all have fairly easy combat. Rattle off any JRPG and they all have easy combat. Maybe Elden Ring has shifted the mindset for folks - which is fine, but that's not the norm. Horizon? Easy. Witcher? Easy. God of War? Easy. I don't really judge these games based on how many times I die. I judge them based on how much fun I have playing with the toolset on offer.

And this game gets me into a zen-like flow state where I feel incredibly engaged moment to moment and where I can personally judge my own performance in fights (despite winning) on whether or not I'm doing good or not. Some battles, I still win but end up really not memorizing the patterns correctly of a new enemy and have to waste a lot of potions. As I play those enemies more throughout the game, I start to master them and the fights end up being fun just trying to optimize how quickly I can get through them as efficiently as possible.

Maybe people are looking for more of a challenge, which I would recommend NG+ or Final Fantasy Mode when those are available. But the developers wanted to make this game more broadly appealing and easy to dive into on a first playthrough.
Have you played those on max difficulty? (ultra hard and gimme a god of war)

If yes, i don't get how you can have a single fraction of challenge in ff16...

Like in 10++ hours i died 3 times, 2 because i was experimenting with the combat and didn't looked at my health and all, and just one legit death.
In the same span of time i probably died 100 times in gow and 50 in horizon at max difficulty.
Simple encounters with trash mobs can fuck you up in those games but they are completely mindless in ff16 (the boss fights are better)

The hateful in ragnarock, a simple trash enemy with damage and aggression turned into 11 killed me 10-15 times per boss fight (there are multiple ones) and by reading the topic at the times the game was out, i was definitely not the only one:lollipop_grinning_sweat:

This is not related to having fun with ff16, i'm having fun aswell, it's just a discussion about challenge.

Spoiler around lvl 35
Just finished dealing with Bahamut it was as wild as ever and the cutscenes after are... some are quite disturbing lmao

So I own every Final Fantasy, but the only one I finished was FF1. Currently playing FF7 Remake for the first time and I really enjoy it because the combat system is just more action oriented. Chances of me finishing it are very high, because FF7R isn‘t that long.

I‘ll get FF16 once I finished FF7R, I liked the demo and the media is praising the battle system. Time to beat it is around 60 hrs, correct?

60-70 hrs by doing everything it seems

I see. So this is the difficulty setting basically. I will turn them off and see how I fare. No wonder I wasn't enjoying combat.
Combat isnt that difficult but its not a spam fest, if u are like me and like to perfect ur foes, u ll need some pratice, after second time skip enemies are more fast, have more moves and hit way harder, is a nice spike in difficult imo.

Why are you comparing the Hard difficulties in those games with the Normal difficulty in this game?

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
How? I’m using control scheme B.

Attacks are R1
Magic Bursts are R2

Charging attacks is either hold down R1/R2 which doesn’t work if you start magic bursting your attacks since both R1 and R2 are occupied?
Bump please!

I think I am about to finish the main story. Despite all its shortcomings as an RPG it still manages to be 9/10. Some of the fights are simple staggering in scale and look phenomenal. And the music gives you goosebumps.

Also put the PS5 in performance mode or some boss fights will shut it down.

Just reached the Sanbreque mothercrystal, exploring the mines and I can safely say a couple of things, spoilers and not:

-I love the game, like, wow: the plot, the look...
-I can't believe how invested I am in every single character in this game, they're all so human, in the best and the worst (especially worst) way possible. Even the secondariest of NPC is somebody I want to see and learn more about. I care about them just as much FFXV and Tabata wanted me to care about Jared
-Speaking of the worst humans, I can say that the two sub-quests in the Royal Meadows are definitely the best so far
-I was already on board with the battle system and I'm amazed by what I can do with just two eikons, but learning that i can keep pressing square to charge the fire blade ANYTIME, even during the cinematic garuda takedown, during the limit break or while rushing/diving with square+cross, opened a new world of possibilities

Yeah, I love it a lot so far and can't wait to find out more, especially after finding those stones hidden around the map.

I am so torn on this game, the positives are impressive graphics, fantastic set pieces, outstanding sound design, gripping story, and flashy looking combat. The negatives are, linear progression, boring side quests, combat is easy and takes way to long against some enemies, and RPG mechanics are as in-depth as a puddle.

Overall I am still enjoying it (solid 8/10 so far), but honestly its not even in my top 5 for FF games.

After some hours I will say that, for now, the game feels worse that FFXV. It’s very choppy in the progression (lots of pauses, messages, tutorials, etc.). Combat is fun but not remarkable. Graphics are good but performance is average.

Let’s hope it gets better in time…

How many hours ?

For someone that platinued vanilla XV i can say that this game is way better

I usually never seek assistance online or check guides, etc but I have a question.

I have yet to return to the hideout. I keep playing, assuming the story will eventually lead me back there. I have been barely getting by with no potions and the broadsword I bought at the start. I just barely lost my fight with Garuda and it got me thinking.

Is it intended that I return to the hideout regularly when the game loads the overhead map? I noticed that I could, but it feels strange to be urgently chasing someone but then casually walk back to the hideout.

Playing through this over the next month or two (play most FFs/RPGs with my daughter who loves them) - still early on (just left The Hideaway), but the story seems entertaining and after DQ11 I'm happy for a sub 90 hour RPG now. I think after playing more and giving Quality mode a few more tries I've come to realize it's not the 30fps that killing me, because Performance mode dips below that quite often where my initial impressions were it stayed at 60 quite often (now it's the reverse). However it is the motion blur that kills quality mode for me. I can't get over how bad it makes it look. Even at sub 20fps the Performance mode looks less blurry to me, so I'll continue with that.

Also first impression Cid's character does not match his voice at all IMO, it's almost like they reversed Cid's and Goetz' voices in the game.

Pretty much make me ignore him.

He have points, but we give importance to very different things.

Btw, the game keeps on giving on each eikon fight.

I arrive expecting a 20 out of 10 fights, and still, I leave with a 30 every single time.

Also it may help play ot with an OLED with HDR.

This is the next gen god of war we deserve. Thanks SM for your daddy Kratos and all but your crown have been taken.

Completely unfair against XVI. Even if you take away the hit or miss optional content, the core experience is heads and shoulders above XIII, XV and arguably 7R.

Game journos, whether on website on Youtube will make a living hyping up a game or trashing a game. I'm not subbed to any. What's the point?

People just need to follow their convictions with games and actually most things in life. So many seem to rely on being persuaded one way or another by others or look for validation. Especially games. You see it on GAF all the time, people trashing a game they haven't played because they heard negative talking points from someone else.

I knew I'd love XVI, just as I loved XC3, will enjoy 7 Rebirth, Persona 3 Remake, Metaphor etc...

Just started the game a few hours ago and I'm heading to the garuda fight. The game has been too linear. It's weird I'm not really feeling it but at the same time I'm hooked. I was thinking the game was a spam fest but it is probably because I have those rings equipped at the start. It's weird I'm like why are their so many cutscenes but I also like seeing the interactions in those cutscenes.

I've played the game for a few hours but I feel like I've barely even gone past the intro. I honestly still don't know how I feel about the game. The game really does remind me of the old ff14 with how the map is set up at times. I feel at the moment like the game will be enjoyable but not a legendary game.

Goddamn lol. That ain't a good look.
Not a good look for FF16, yeah compared to FF7R.

I don't really see him having a double standard in that clip. He explains why one type linearity isn't really gelling with him for example. Or why the itemizations is more meaningful on one game than the other.

He makes a somewhat valid point with elements, but then again the whole flashy and snappy combat would go down the pipe because you wouldn't be able to chain combos effectively if you had to considerer which element to use.

That's not the idea behind the game, and as a "specialized reviewer" he should be able to see that.

Just past the
"Ifrit-Garuda fight"

Game is fantastic, it hooks you completely.
Combat system is really fun and graphics wise it's amazing, it seems like you're playing a CGI sequence in many circumstances.
And the music...OMG Soken outdid himself.

I'm super impressed and happy.
My only complaint so far is that it's pretty linear, it doesn't matter because it hooks you completely for other reasons but I would like to see more open areas later with Chocobo traversal.

And yes this is not really a RPG but more a mix of God of War and DMC, sucks for people who don't want this but it is what it is.

Feels kind of strange to be playing a PlatinumGames joint with sexoooo graphics

I don't want to sound like an elitist, but my god...the rings just make the game much, much less fun.

After reading the descriptions of what the starting rings did I decided not to use them, except for the auto-potion one. And the game is still fairly gentle without them.

The best way to play the game imo is to not give yourself a defensive edge and go full offense. If you have crafting materials, always spend them on making/improving weapons first, defensive items second. Use all your ring slots for damage. Go as glass cannon as you can.

Excessive boss checkpoints and the lack of a harder mode from the outset are really my only complaints at this stage. Otherwise it's a damn fine game and a huge, huge improvement over XV imo.

Just past the
"Ifrit-Garuda fight"

Yeah I was gobsmacked. God of War ain't got shit on this.

“If you don’t like the characters, story, and combat, then there’s not a lot here for you”

Yeah, no fucking shit Skill. That’s how games tend to work.
Playing devil's advocate here:

I think he's talking about that other (FF?) games might have exploration, character builds and side-content etc. to make up for the things he listed.

Just unlocked the ability to block attacks. (Eikon ability) Performing perfect timing blocks alows to a counter attack. The combat is now in God Tier Fun. Game story keeps getting its very high momemts and since Witcher 3 that i was not so invested in a game story, the characters and its lore so much. The Active Time Lore is an awesome ideas for RPGs.

No wonder we are getting less and less honest reviewer.
Some people don’t have the ability to form their own opinion.
lol some of the posts in this last page......

Idk how a guy is being dishonest or not forming his own opinion when hes basically the only reviewer to not enjoy the game lol. Yall get so butthurt and over what? If you aren't some crazed FF fanboy its not hard to like this game AND see the things he said in his vid are valid

Then he needs to re-contextualize the quote, because it really doesn’t sound that way.

Quick edit: that’s also the only part of his video I tend to take umbrage with because as a specific quote I think it’s a really bad quote. Pretty much everything in a game gets wrapped up in “gameplay”, “story” or “characters,” so saying there’s not much there if you don’t like them is incredibly obvious.

The rest of it is fine. I certainly don’t agree with his points but I see where he’s coming from when he made them and can understand why he feels that way.

Wait, what? There's a block mechanic?

I never take this guy seriously, especially after his Tlou p2 review . Never understand why people like him.
He is the one who called DMC and Bayonetta something along the lines of mindless button mashers in his GOW review right?
He's a clown, he doesn't like one type of game and reviews them according to it

I don't like the last Zeldas but I can admit they are masterpieces even if not for me
