Visually, yes. You have to still manually equip them. At least I had to.

Just like you were automatically given new visual design in FF4 after you become a Paladin.

I definitely like the DQ11 style better where there's dozens of outfits and you can unlock different ones from rewards/shops and you can choose an appearance setup different from your main equipment look.

Even FFVII:Remake was at least nice enough to illustrate the different weapons all uniquely. It definitely felt more like a RPG than this does. But it's ok that not all the games are the same!

Um, the weapons are all unique in this as well.

What? Have you not played the game? You also get set unique weapon designs here as well.
Oh you're right, it's still early on for me, but the sword did change. I guess FFVII Remake just had more variety of weapons (arm guns, staffs, clubs, etc). That's good at least it changes a bit here too!

It took me a while to notice the weapons changed also don't feel bad. 😆

poll results are kind of strange, based on the responses I'm used to seeing here, like "I'll only play in perf mode blah blah" and "fps over resolution all day". Seems a majority who is playing it here prefer quality mode.

This track right here is what I was looking for:

There are still a few more variations of it about Sanbreque, but ughh.... so good. You can hear how they blended a bit of VI in it, particularly "Edgar and Sabin" Theme/Coin Song around 1:55 and after. I daresay "Searching for Friends" from FFVI after listening more intimately.
Of course, the thematic serene vocals in there too!

Benedikta's Theme is one of my favorite compositions of all time, up there with Noel's theme. "Our Terms" is such a chill song to relax to in the Hideaway.

This track = :messenger_ok:

Just rolled credits

-46 hours
- all sidequests
- crafted the best sword

Missed some hunts and 1item for the wall of memories (the one you need to complete all challenges, honestly cant be arsed)

Honestly not sure I liked the ending a lot but it wasnt bad either, ill see how I feel about it in a few days. Thanks Square, it has been an incredible week, my GOTY so far.

I might have to be done until a patch. The noise is unbearable and takes me out of the game completely. This sucks because the game is really fucking good.

No high pitch noises when Jill is on camera. Then when she’s behind you, it’s loud and clear.

Just hit this part. It’s a metal clinking noise just warped a little too high pitch for the low quality of the sample, not sure what’s supposed to be making the noise though(I don’t see anything on her that would actually clink). The same sound sample plays through her idle animation when she moves, so it’s likely intended. But honestly it’s not as bad as some of the overdone leather foley work that sounds like:

Why did you have to wear leather pants in your youth Clive? Why? You sound like the Eikon of a fart.

I would say another issue, and I have this with XIII, is introducing these foreign, distant civilizations and locations that you never visit. Even outside of the latter, Sanbreque was more a spectacle than anything else. They invest many hundred thousand hours into building these aesthetically gorgeous and background rich worlds just to play, as an example, an hour or two segment followed by discarding it thereafter.

The days are gone when players would be well rewarded for following off-trail clues, solving stimulating puzzles, and/or a series of riddles over the course of the game to unlock an area accessible by no other — especially one you could observe afar or harbor mystique about for the better part of your adventure. You genuinely want to explore to involve and invest yourself in the people and the world but it’s cut out the game far too often. If not that, then relegated to an in-game encyclopedia and footnotes.

Such playable content contributes to the total playable hours of the game. Compared to XII’s easy 200+, I think there’s less than 75 out of XVI. You want more but it’s just where the journey ends for the IP and the dev team.

Just finished it today, my opinion has definitely cooled since I started. The first half or so of the game is by far the stronger. It's like they decided to start the story leaning into Matsuno, GoT, Witcher influenced "political fantasy" and to end the story leaning into all the dumbest JRPG tropes. Totally baffling decision, and the lack of endgame content (no superboss) and the shallowness, indeed vestigiality, of the RPG mechanics doesn't help.

So yeah, it's infinitely better than XIII and XV but this is yet another example of the series just not living up to its potential. Obviously at one point they wanted this to be a serious, mature game about a relatively grounded medieval fantasy setting, and if they had stuck to that impulse the game would be a lot better. As it is, it's overall just a good AAA game, on the level with God of War or Ghost of Tsushima - a fun time, but not a masterpiece.

Also, I'm baffled by the decision to fixate so much on these worthless side characters like Gav and the merchants in the hub instead of on the actual party member stand-ins who seem to get bizarrely little screentime.

Ughhh the side quests are fucking terrible. Even the main quests have bad pacing and weird tonal shifts when certain characters
Jill
are just side lined because they just forgot to really develop an arc.
It's like they started an idea with the way certain characters would influence the story but just decided to half ass it at the end and add the "Active Time Lore" to fill any plot holes.

The relationships that tie many of these characters together is under developed and don't have any good payoff or nuance.

I agree theres an issue with the sidequests because they are mostly fluff but THEN once in a while there will be some that add to the plot or actually make things make sense, so they are basically a requirement to finish the game.

Your interpretation of the events and the character relationships would be real shitty should you not commit like 15 hours of your playthrough to sort through the bunch of shitty sidequests. Even so because the combat was so fun (particularly end game) I had a fun time completing them.

If you are at the end game please you pretty much have to complete these quests:

- Jill's quest, this one is pretty missable as it will only appear as a letter in the missive. In Clive's room

- Old tomes quest with harpocrates wanting to gift Dion a flower.

- Joshua's quest about their father's will.

- Blacksmith Blues 1-4 if you want the best sword in the game.

Realistically they just want you to complete them all and its a massive ball ache.

True, but it just feels like the game is on auto pilot at times. It's very streamlined. At least you make it sound like that doesn't happen again, aka regular occurrence, which is good.

As far as I've played yes, you're basically on autopilot regarding the "choices" you can make. It's basically just going through the menu and picking the next upgrade. I mean, FF was never great for choice in how you build your character, but this is a step further in how streamlined and limited it is.

At the point I'm at I consider this as much of an RPG as current GOW, which is basically saying that it's not one.

The only thing the crafting system is used RPG wise is the way of getting the best sword in the game (on initial playthrough) where it requires you to follow a 2 multipart quests and then gather materials via hunts.

The game couldve used more of that, because sidequest rewards were usually shit.

I'm not even quite done with the game but I agree strongly with this. I was really not thrilled at all when that showed up and continued to get stronger and move further away from what the first portion of the game is about. I mean, I halfway expected it so it wasn't surprising, just disappointing. I'm very close to the end I'm sure but I mostly just want it to end now whereas before I was enjoying it much more (plot wise).

It's just where all or most games are going these days. Nothing to be done but grin and bear it.

Anyone else noticed Ava from Borderlands 3? It’s like there is one in every fukin’ game now.

In real life, young girls can’t even wipe their own asses without mommy and daddy’s support. But in this game, they are expert ship captains and wise loremasters. How You ask? you don’t need experience and hardship if you are a girl because girls are naturally awesome. Boys, on the on the other hand, we are mornos. We only learn through silly things like work and experience.

Completed the game and what a ride. 9/10 is my overall ranking. Brilliant game. Love the story, characters and fights. A little on the easier side but its fine. I guess they want it the be more accessible and less hard and thats alright by me.

Negs are side quests are a bit much and a little oddly placed. Which is a litle annoying for completionists. Other than that had a blast with it.

Also for the ending
so sad. And bittersweet. Shame no real epilogue after the final sacrifice scene. Would've liked to seen more. Could've been a little more happier though I suppose it would've been nigh impossible to survive all that and save the world :< RIP Clive and Joshua

Did the same funnily enough got best in slot (weapons and armor) and done all side quests. I did leave my PS5 on idle for a while but it took 53 hours overall.

Yeah was an incredible experience. My Goty as well. And doubt it will be topped by anything else this year.

For the ending

With Jill seeing the dawn after night and Thorgal howling instead of whimpering like he does when he's sad you could imply that Clive survived or at least Joshua since Clive cured him after all.

If you watched the post credit scene youll have seen the book was written by Joshua or at least someone claiming to be. Also theres the sidequest with Harpocrates where he gives you a Quill and tells you he hopes you put down the sword and pick the quill up to write about your adventures. [/SPOILERS]

I’m sorry it’s happening to you too. Although I’m glad I’m not alone here on GAF. I mean, I know there’s already a few others, but you know what they say about misery.

I have the game on hold until it’s patched. It really does hurt my head, and it makes me not able to concentrate on the game itself.

Yeah it will just load you to the nearest fast travel point. You can make a manual save closer to the hunt and reload it. That's what I ended up doing.

Wish we knew more about a few things heavy spoilers ahead:

Leviathan the lost is a huge plot hole, where is that eikon? Why is he lost? What happened? When Ultima attacks you with all the eikon powers he doesn't use water magic against the fire eikon. He also says at last the vessel is complete but Clive never absorbed leviathan.

-The medicine girl didn't even get a name but was featured a good bit in cutscenes, I just feel there's cut content there.

- What was Barnabas' fixation with his mother? How long had he been akashic? He conquered Ash 40 years before the last time skip yet didnt age a day. Cid used to be his lord commander, you have to assume he knew most of Barnabas intentions? Specially since he told Ultima "I know who you are".

That's a good point.
Yeah I watched it but was unsure if it was written by him or about him. I guess it does sort of leave it open for people in interpret. I'd like to think he did survive that and lived on to rebuild the world.

Wouldn't mind if they gave us a DLC like ME 3 extended ending lol.

Yeah, check my other post for added comments. I would be there day 1 for DLC, there are many things to uncover still.

More than likely his people died out. Could have been part of the children of Dzemekys.

She did have a name and you just had to go to the lore menu to figure that out.

He is very old, he misses his mom - a child of Dzemekys who left and returned years later.

So, played quite a bit more and... It's a fun game to play, undeniably so. It has some very big issues tho, especially with the fact that the gameplay relies solely on the combat mechanics, with very little around it. It could've been so much better with stronger RPG elements to support the combat and better exploration to avoid the "corridor > arena > corridor > arena > boss > rinse > repeat" pitfall it often falls on.

It is a shame, as the good stuff is definitely there, it's just bogged down by some very poor design decisions.

I don’t know if you ever played FF5, but this character is exactly based on that one. Everything here makes sense since this game took inspiration from V more than any other FF.
