I recently discovered that you can charge his O attack with precision evading by a lot.

Still kinda meh because it's kinda of a passive not fun playstyle.

Yeah good point I forgot you can do that. Im with you though that playstyle isnt really my jam I'd rather be smashing faces than trying to bait evades

No i don't care for trophies, i was doing the quest for the reason you say but i got bored:lollipop_grinning_sweat:

As I've been saying from the start, this game reminds me so much of Nier its kinda weird. And like that game the side-quests are just there for flavour purposes. So if you don't get anything from the nuggets of character, world-building and plot there's not much value to them.

I get some people don't like this, but being honest I can't really fault it either from a design standpoint. If you want more of the same, its there. But if you are just doing it because you feel you have to, then it is going to be mostly a slog with some isolated things of interest scattered amongst it.

If you want to get on with the story, make a save file for later (not really tried how the stage replay feature works, but I'd assume it serves the same purpose) and get on with it. As noted, quests with an immediate payoff that is immediately beneficial (like increasing potion slots/potency) are distinctly marked with a plus symbol, its all very clearly signposted.

From a design philosophy standpoint this seems right to me. Its kinda obvious that not every piece of content in any game can be of equal importance, so unless you (the creative) take the approach of streamlining down to the golden path with very little outside it*, then signposting what is the main course and what are the side dishes seems sufficient and fair.

*I hate the idea because using this logic the only thing of value in a book or movie is the stuff that drives the plot forwards, when it seems self evident to me that textural detail is crucial for filling out the story with meaning and context. Game stories are no different, in fact they are arguably more adversely affected because the mechanics of gameplay are self-limiting. When all your inputs are directed towards killing stuff, you can't really expose any other sides of the protagonist character other than their skill at fighting.

Damn the middle of the game is kinda a slog, I'm with Byron in the
The Desert Town
and all the game is right now is:

  • Go talk to someone
  • Find original quest giver
  • talk to 3 more people
  • small fight
  • find quest giver
  • find them again
  • a small fight
This is definitely MMO inspired! The worst part is, I've just done 2 similar story quests like this

I just reached the conclusion of that arc (which is incredible!) but I'm gonna stop playing for today as I know the start of the next section is gonna follow that same weak ass, padded formula.

It really is baffling. A linear game which somehow incorporates the worst pacing aspects of open worlds.

Tested out the patch and it's excellent.
The ability to turn off camera movement is godsend!!! Removes unwanted camera movement when you move diagonally and want to look forward.
I tested the motion blur and on my oled, even setting 3 introduces some judder to faster moving objects. I am keeping it on 5. With new camera setting it is much less intrusive anyway.

BUT I FOUND OUT SOMETHING INTERESTING
The master audio volume that is default at 70... actually is ALSO CONTROLLING DUALSENSE VIBRATION AND HAPTICS STRENGTH !!!
Turn that shit to 0 and no vibration. Turn to 100 and a bit more. Shame I only found it out now.

This is how I felt. Whenever I would swap to it I would find myself just moving around waiting for enemies to attack and it really illustrated how little the enemies really do.
You can provoke them with the taunt but it's far from ideal. I switched to anything else because it broke the flow of the game. By the time I've reached lvl 5 Bahamut I could have dealt with most enemies in the game. The only use I found to it was by using it against bosses while combining it with rift slip, but that is the best skill in the game... so it evens out.

dualsense vibrations work of an audio signal.... but in most games you can mute the game and the audio stuff is still sent to dualsense in the background for vibrations.
Not here apparently.

Welp, I'm lovin' the game again, for the story and characters. Coming up on the end, finally. Only real gripe are these fucking side quests, they go on and on and on forever, it seems. Some of them are interesting, but a lot of them are just stupid nonsense that make Clive feel out of place doing them.

Unless something drastically changes, this is a good 7/10 game for me.

Oh my just reached Ash and spent about 30mins looking at the cliffs and listening to that piano theme lol

Definitely feels inspired by Mordor so I'm in love.

Could someone kindly YouTube link the piano music that plays there? I'm on a YouTube blackout for the game...! Thanks x

I think maybe the reason the “boring” side quests never bothered me was because I skipped voice acting when I wasn’t super interested. They really aren’t that long, you can read through them so quickly and I can’t really remember a side quest that took longer than 20 min.

This game gives it to you if want it, but not everything needs to be voice acted. Reading is fast.

what is it about review sites that, depending on the game, make them incapable of seeing these things? (that's a rhetorical question, btw)...
Right. People are acting we're talking out of our ass and it's like, "you're the one who's saying it's 10/10 & GOTY, best FF ever..." I feel like I'm over here just pointing out the obvious and trying to have some laughs at the games plethora of shortcomings.

XVI is legitimately one of the most mind-numbingly dumb games I've played in a while. I can only think that maybe some gamers have short memories with what games actually looked and played like as recently as the PS3, there's absolutely nothing in XVI that we haven't seen before and when we did see it it was in better fashion.

I mean, didn’t XIII and XV get super high critical praise initially as well? Now that some time has passed, people have mellowed out on them.

Dunno about 13 but 15 was definitely praised to high heaven by a lotta people and reviewers. It's the honeymoon phase with a big franchise they've been looking forward to. Many people won't accept the wait was for nothing. I've seen this on many games. Denial is the first stage.

I can't speak for XV, never played it and didn't follow it but with XIII there was little (if any), "best FF ever, GOTY, etc." It was a lot of misdirected hate towards it being multiplatform and lots of images of maps showing how linear the game is and auto-battle comments, which is disingenuous on the battle system as a whole. Also, few people would sit there and argue that FFXIII is the best FF ever, or GOTY. That was crazy talk then and crazy talk now.

I'm leaning into critiquing XVI because the hyperbole surrounding the game is absurd.

Think about it, now that more people are playing the game this thread more or less accepts that the game is too easy on it's default "action" mode. So rather than fully accept the critique, we have people saying that it's not the games fault that it's too easy and that people should artificially make the game difficult by unequipping items or by not buying potions.

We've also reached the reply-phase of, "Souls games aren't hard either...and, all Final Fantasy's were easy and linear..." The shining comparisons that show off how epic XVI include, "this must have been inspired by Mordor, or GOT"...and my favorite, this is more epic than GOWIII". Like WTF is this? That's the 10/10 2023 GOTY? Fucking Mordow inspired epicness that we haven't seen since the likes of the GOW3 which released in March of 2010 on the PS3? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

People posting that stuff on a gaming forum don't deserve to be taken serious.

FFXVI's shortcomings have been widely recognized since it's first week. Same exact thing happened with XIII and XV, only XIII and XV's shortcomings were worse and that's why they have lower Metacritic scores. Most reviews for XVI whether they're high or middling scores, have pointed out the issues the game has with it's pacing, side quest design, and RPG elements. It's just that for a lot of folk, the positives of the game are good enough to not ruin the experience. If you don't agree then great. Humanity would be in a dark place if we all loved/hated the same things.

The last two games were highly criticized when they released. There was a huge outcry for XIII when people found out how linear the game was when the level maps leaked before the game's release, and when the game actually came out, people criticized it's nonsensical story, that you had to read a whole bunch of codex entries to make heads or tails of it, and the characters were widely regarded as awful. FFXV was criticized for it's fractured pacing, bad storytelling, brainless combat, side quests were poor, and the game clearly being incomplete. The pacing and storytelling was brought up a lot due to the open world where the plot moves like a tortoise, and then you're suddenly railroaded into a 10 hour linear rollercoaster all the way to the end.

I'm leaning into critiquing XVI because the hyperbole surrounding the game is absurd.

The only hyperbole here is arguably coming from you. I've lost count how many times you've posted about how FFXVI is an irredeemable joke of a game. People like what they're gonna like and you need to deal with it, instead of making it your mission to rain on people's parade and change their opinions on it.

Unless you have egregious short term memory lost, this OT is filled with people criticizing the game on almost every page.

I see people in here dumping on the FF series as a whole and dumping on other franchises in an attempt to mask some of XVI's shortcomings. It's pathetic, and to see that in a gaming enthusiast forum, of course people are gonna point out the shortcomings of the game when people straight faced claim that XVI is better than the entirety of the FF franchise or games like TOTK or ER. If everyone were saying XVI is 7/10, there wouldn't be much to debate cause the game would be accepted as mediocre. It's specifically the 10/10, best FF hyperbole that is laughable because we all have access to the game. Nothing about XVI is remotely special considering what is and has been available for decades when it comes to gameplay/story/graphics.

There's a vast difference between saying something "this is my personal..." vs. saying, "this is..."

I'll champion the former all day, the latter is something to debate.

I thought I’d push through the noise, but I can’t. I made a new video as the next area was hit with the blight and you can hear the noise clearer there, as there aren’t any birds to confuse it with.

hmm, I can hear the chirping noise in your video but I don't notice it when I'm playing the game myself, weird.

And that's where you and a lot of people are going to differ. Fan infighting has been a part of Final Fantasy since the 90s, even going way back to FFVII where some people argued it wasn't a true Final Fantasy. This isn't anything new.

I'm more than aware of FFXVI's faults. But the story, the cast, the protagonist, music, combat, boss battles, and world building made up for the game's faults for me. I got nothing but mild enjoyment out of XII, XIII and XV. But I completed XVI last friday, and it's still living rent free in my head.

I know, very few rare cases I replay a game immediately right after I finish them, but I start NG+ with FFXVI right after end credit scene.

I finished it last thursday and I have played 0 games since, I can't start a new game when all I think about is my time with XVI. I haven't even been able to pick TOTK back up.

I hope you get to keep some stuff in ng+ like weapons and materials, because if I do decide to play again, I sure as hell wont do side missions again.

That I haven’t tried. But the bug on starts once Jill is added to your party. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling though. I wonder if the others who experienced this are also playing from a disc.
Played from disc without the issue here. If it helps, Jill is not on your party all the time so maybe skip side content until shes gone from the party :p

You're still missing the obvious thing and approaching it from a place I'm not in. Take your lazy analysis to reddit and try to get some upvotes. This is NeoGaf bruh.

I don't care if FFXVI is different from the other games in the franchise, and few people are arguing over that in this thread. The ardent defenders of XVI are the ones acting like XVI is totally in-line with the FF franchise and isn't anything out of the ordinary, you guys try to have it every possible way cause you won't allow a realistic conversation to be had on the game itself and what it brings to the table in 2023.

My qualm is that people are doing *shots fired* with using verbiage in which they claim that XVI is definitively the best in the FF series and that it's definitively better than Souls, ER, BOTW, TOTK. People are lobbing some absolute bombs and then getting butthurt when people call BS and point out obvious issues with the XVI.

Obnoxious design decision again - why have a sprint button when your character will just randomly break into a sprint whenever he wants? Sometimes in a few steps, sometimes you gotta jog a lot, always a surprise!

I like the *woosh* effect how the end result is Clive moving a touch faster.

I also like how the jump height changes at random. Sometimes a slight leap, other times a small hop. All of them seemingly useless.

Meh, I’m having way more fun with this game than Elden Ring and BOTW. I don’t think it’s crazy to say.

I'm briefly mentioning why the game worked for me, or did you actually want a 5,000 word essay on why I enjoyed the game? I don't think you'd care. You're too busy sinking dozens of hours into a game you think is horrible.

There may be a few people on here who are acting like FFXVI is the best thing since slice bread, but so what? Let them enjoy the game and call it their GotY. You think coming at them from the opposite extreme side of the spectrum, calling it a terrible joke of a game and comparing it to Resident Evil 6 is the right play? Fine go ahead. Just expect those who love the game will pay the same respect in kind.
