Forza Horizon demo impressions

i have to try this with the wheel this weekend. as of now though, not sure i'll be picking it up. handling is dull, even on dirt. the offroad sections are as wide as a highway and nearly as smooth.

Yeah try it with the wheel. It's unbelievable how much better the game is with it.

It's like the game rewards people who play with a wheel. Feels great.

Controller impressions:

Graphics: Awesome. Day/night is fantastic but there is too much orange bloom.
Sounds: Awesome
Music: Not for me but ok
Events: I hope there is a lot of variety
Setting: Awesome
Handling/physics: Crap

This is not FM4 physics. Not even close. I took all the aids off sans ABS and put the steering to simulation. I really expected the Viper to feel like a beast and instead it is on rails. The Evo on dirt has almost no oversteer and just feels wrong. I get none of that FM4 weight transfer or connection to the road. FH may be based off of FM4 but it is no FM4.

how different? I havent had a chance to try it out

You can actually feel the difference in handling of the cars, as well as driving off/on road.

Really, if I didn't have a wheel I would be really disappointed in Forza Horizon. As someone else said, there's a night and day difference between the game with a wheel and the game without it.

Unlike Forza 4 the road surfaces can really be felt through the force feedback, there's almost a constant pull or nudge from the steering as you travel over bumps, at speed you really need to keep your wits about you. Driving over dirt is as rough as Sega Rally was, the wheel is always kept busy.

Oversteer correction is another thing, a flick of the stick on a joypad and you are pointing in the right direction again, that Mustang is a fucking pig to drive but you can feel what it is doing a lot of the time, most of the problems I have with it is over correcting slides. It's fun.

Yeah, I'd say they haven't optimised it at all for controllers. Having sound and vibration (the two biggest things you use to judge traction in a driving game... at least, on a pad) noticeably muted really fucks things up. I might try with the speed wheel thingy tonight, but given how damn difficult MS have made it to get any kind of FFB wheel at a semi-decent price, I'd say they've targeted the wrong crowd (controller-wise) with the demo.

Welcome to Forza "community".

Heh, not only with Forza, but it seems that people focus and come up only with the flaws, even if it's not a real flaw. Or, in some cases, there is this flaw, it's not something that you have to deal all the time or is not that big, but people act like "OH MY GOD, THIS THING IS GONNA GIVE ME CANCER"

If people stop fantasizing the perfect game, and enjoy the game for what it is (just like we did before the internet with the SNES and Genesis [or Mega Drive]) they will be happier gamers...

Come on now. Marketing teams bring this upon themselves. The expectations for this game were set by Turn 10 and Playground, not the wild imaginings of onlookers.

Left to my own wishes I just wanted something better than TDU at its own game, and this game provides that for me, so its all good. But its not dismissive to wonder why this game is a Forza title, and just what is meant by 'Forza DNA' and 'Forza authenticity'. If its not the underpinning physics and driving feel then what is it?

Personally, it feels more like PGR than Forza to me. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I love me some PGR4! Shame about Bizarre. :(

Forza 5 will come along and it'll be exactly what fans expect in terms of physics and handling so I wouldn't fret too much about it.

He's talking about the Rennsport wheel stand.

I've noticed the linearity issue with the wheels and Xbox, what settings do you use?

If WRC 3 demo has a way of checking it out I'll download it.

In WRC3 it requires taking the linearity slider to the left 2 notches. No options for it in Forza and the linearity setting on the wheel(PWTS) twists the linearity in the wrong direction.

Ive been just cruising the the map for the last few hours.

Sideways or back and forward?

Back and forward. I have tightened the screw with the power of ZEUS, but it still rocks back and forth. It wasn't that noticible until I got the shifter, and now it's a huge annoyance. I would probably use the wheel more often if it was rock steady. Its one of the reasons I haven't upgraded to the csr elite wheel, that thing is much bigger and can already see a potential issue. I'm almost tempted to look for an alternative solution.

Have you tried adding a small amount of deadzone on the wheel's menu? It didn't work as I expected, there is no noticable gap in sensitivity or ffb at the centre, seems to smooth over the centre if anything.

This is really bland. The worst parts of burnout, motorstorm, need for speed and mario kart in one convenient package. Ugh.

Be a man instead ;) if you can't find another solution like trying a different screw for it you could just drill a third hole to the base. It hasn't bothered me yet to do something about it but I might look in to it later this week, I've got all kinds of tools back home.

Totally agree. My fears from several months ago about the dilution of the Forza brand have been realised. What does 'Forza' now represent in the world of videogames?
Calling Horizon 'open world' (think Fuel freedom) when it's really 'open road' (think Hot Pursuit confinement) is pretty serious misdirection in my book as well.
I guess my overall impression is that the game appears competent from the demo. There's nothing overtly wrong with it - it just plays a little dull when compared to its peers. I'd probably enjoy it, but only for a couple of hours.

With a controller I still have mad amounts of fun with the demo, maybe I should invest in a wheel though...

Yeah, same. Racing against that friggin' plane got me extremely pumped, especially since I ended up finishing the race not even a full second before the plane. Seeing it fly directly at me while I was heading straight for the finish line was amazing.

Slightly off topic, anyone wants to get rid of logitech pedals ?
My Fanatec set is not working (again) and i was looking for a replacement, but i'm not really willing to spend 200$ on clubsport pedals

You could ask Fanatec for a discount on the csr or csr elite pedals. Are yours still under warranty?

In what way? I might have missed some recent news about MW (I've not been following it too closely lately). Have EA been making some false claims about it?
Pr and ads over promising or not being specific about game features? preposterous!

Also, there are some open areas in the game like a golf field and an industrial area from what I've seen in the videos.

My only complaint is about an inch of wiggle on the center post which for the life of me I cant get rid of.

Yeah, I have this too. Sometimes it isn't there if I tighten it but it usually comes back. I've learned to live with it, and it's a good stand in other ways.

They also describe Most Wanted as being "open world".

As they have every NFS game with an open world. I don't have any problem with Forza Horizon or NFS calling their games open world either.

An "open world" game developed by CE, under the Need For Speed banner, but basically being Burnout Paradise+

The trick is to wiggle the post as you tighten the screw.

Not under warranty, but Thomas already offered a small discount for clubsport pedals (still too much, considering how much i'll be using them).
CSR Pedals at 80$ that's not bad at all, i hadn't thought of that option.
i assume they're better than the old standard pedals that came with the TWPS ?

(btw, i hope it's the pedals and not the connector on the wheel side that's giving me problems)

You can try to find out by measuring the resistance of the pedal potentiometers from the end of the cable and see if the resistance increases/decreases correctly when you move the pedal. You'll need a multimeter for it of course.

A video was going around of some kind of filter that helps if the pedals appear to have a life of their own.

edit: screwed up the link, Google 'basherboards'

I was just going through the upgrades video when I noticed something.
When the guy was hovering over exhaust upgrade, part of the description read..

"These upgrades also make an audible difference"

Now, the last time we saw that description was in FM2. In FM2, swapping out exhausts actually changed the exhaust note of the vehicle. We haven't seen this since.

Maybe the reason why sounds are civilized/toned down in Horizon is perhaps it's making a return.(Holy shit if true!!). Maybe they meant to start the cars out stock, then crank up that shit as we upgrade our cars ala FM2.

On the other hand, "audible difference" could be referring to Wiswell's DSP effects from FM4 which would mean raspier stock notes and not actual changed notes..

Am I the only one who cares?
