Forza Motorsport |OT| Step on the GaaS

I don’t know if a lot of you here remember, but both Project Cars and Project Cars 2 had pretty good campaigns that made you feel like you were actually a racing driver competing in a series and eventually a championship. Even small things like seeing virtual social media accounts reacting to your performance from the last race, or how well another driver did, and you receiving various emails from your engineer, and offers from different teams really went a long way to making those games feel immersive in the motorsport world.

That’s what I would love for FM to have. I love the series, but if it’s gonna have Motorsport in the name, then it needs to focus more on actual motorsport things. Race weekends, pit strategies, teammates, racing series, longer races, in-game engineers talking to you, more focus on race cars throughout the campaign etc. I know FM has never been a genuine “sim”, but let’s still take the good things from amazing sim racers like ACC and Project Cars 1-2, and even the F1 games, and implement them here with a Forza spin. This is Forza Motorsport, embrace that subtitle.

Functional pits, fuel and tire choices, and penalties are a good step, though.

I counted them, and there are 6 tours with a total of 30 cups. 5 in the builders cup and 1 in Featured (Track Tour). With a total of 128 races, plus the 3 practise laps before each race.

You’re counting tour that’s not even unlocked yet… and mentioning practice like it’s some kind of extra content. It is not.

Now compare it to a game that actually released in a feature complete state, like FM4.

These lazy mofos think that dropping one cup per week is amazing game as a service content. We should be getting at least one juicy tour with great rewards based on how many cups in that tour you’ve completed. That should be a bare minimum.

I hate Catalunya track with passion. It’s not fun to drive. Suzuka full circuit in late afternoon moving to the night is amazing on the other hand.

So I fired it up and had a decent go. Still waiting for my wheel. Won the first builders cup and started the second cup.

The sound is great. The sensation in rumble is great. I don't think trail braking is great, got to be honest. I like the package overall but I do think GT7 just does a better job of feeling like I'm driving. Having said that, this game has a better balance of racing and I can appreciate each for their strengths. I'll likely play this, GT7 and ACC at differing times. They're all good.

The only think I do actively dislike is when using cockpit view it feels like you're clear in spacing but I seem to brush a lot of cars I'm not expecting to. Almost like the spacial awareness is just slightly off. And it's really easy to take too much out the pace on tight turns. Not sure if it's because of lower PI cars or the trail braking problems I have above - though that might just be a preference thing for me.

I just met a cheater online :

:)

My first online race after the tutorial was a really good experience.
Physicy where improved in s significant amount. The feeing of driving is much more present than in previous titles, and I don't mean Forza Horizon.

Graphics wise.... Hm... A mixed bag. RT reflections on SX were bad. In cockpit view the mirrors are pixelated as fuck. Looking like a ps2 mirror. Really bad.

Sound is really great.

The core of a racing game, the driving physics where really good. Online multi-player is great.

The rest, the CP System etc is something that will improve in the furure.
If I had to pay for this game I would wait a few months till l they get things right. For a Gamepass game it's good enough because multi-player is so good!

Since early access Ive completed 2 series (or cups) so far. Thats 10 races with practise laps. I dont have that much time to sit and play for 5 hours a day and go through a massive singleplayer campaign so Im good with how it is. Its going to take me a couple of months to get through the tours, whenever they unlock I dont mind. Rivals have been good, got stuck in there for a while tonight.

Sup everyone, got questions :

Where's time attack ?
What happened to awesome tracks of FM4 ?

I've played religiously FM 1,3,4 and then stayed on DriveClub for many years, I'm perplexed FM8 don't feature tracks a bit more eye catching (FM4 again) love the game so far it's real good gameplay wise ( minimum assists and lvl 5 IA)

ok cool, is there something akin to FM3 / 4 where you can admire your car in anoter location than the "garage" or penthouse? Like outdoor / Landscape, GT5 was amazing for that

Other than the game crashing like crazy on my PC, I've been having a blast with it.

I haven't gotten really into a sim racer since... Gran Turismo 3 maybe? But I'm feeling super hooked to Forza so far. We'll see if this continues but I'm having a great time.

That ain't my experience! I got about 3-4 hours total playtime out of "The Builders Cup" before getting locked out of Career. Woeful amount of content.

love how you actually have to rev match now instead of all the past forza a where you could just cheat and slam on the gas.

What do you mean? The next event opens up as you complete the first one. OR choose a different Tour.

There's about 60 hours of content if you figure 2-3 hours a series im not sure how you are locked out of anything. Not not seen anyone else hit this bug, if it is one that is.

Why is it building shaders every time i load the game?

Had to restart once because turning on rt settings completely destroyed my framerate then it crashed again after the turtorial races and now it’s building shaders for the third time.

Sat down to give this a go tonight and it informs me it needs to do a 132gb “update” - what was the point in the preload? And why didn’t it do this before I sat down… I have gigabit internet and it usually maxes out, but it’s downloading at 42Mbps and says 8 hours to finish.

What year is it again?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Are you on Steam? Isn't that just unpacking?

No, Series X - it’s downloading for sure… I don’t usually see the update needed screen, so something must’ve gone wrong this time. I’m just sour because it’s wrecked my evening plan lol.

Thought about giving it a go on Steam Deck via GeForce Now, but that will be a lesser experience than on my projector with surround sound… And I haven’t tried it yet. Think I’ll wait for the better first impression.

AMD GPU? It's a known bug I believe.

Oh well, this and GT7 have gone down the grindathon service route and watered down single player.

I'd rather mess around in Forza Horizon and that's coming from someone that has played iracing, Live for Speed, GT1-5 and loved Forza 3-4. I get the aspect of playing a bit and unlocking stuff but they've massively extended the grind to where it's just a chore trying get anywhere or have fun with car customization. Life is too short for this kind of thing, up yours PD and Turn 10.

I don't understand this. The only thing I had access to was Builders Cup. It took me about 3-4 hours to finish that and the next cup I was locked out of. I'll have to go back into Builders and see if there's stuff I missed. I'll report back.

Think you just did the builders cup intro series.

Hit builders cup in the main menu, then click RB and that brings you to the builders cup proper the tours are shown on the left and then each series in the highlighted tour on the right. Click RB again and you have the featured weekly series.

Yeah fuck this i’m out. FPS is tanking down to the 40s. Between this and the crashes its a pretty terrible experience.

I’m gonna redownload Horizon 5 and play that for my racing fix. At least its stable, runs very well and dare I say looks nicer.
Not sure what you're running, so I'm just throwing this out there...

I decided to try turning off DLSS and RTX altogether earlier tonight and finally have a stable 60 (knock on wood).

I'm willing to forego that for now, but I expect it to be fixed in a patch, and soon.

It blows my mind that there's been zero communication from T10 about the PC performance issues. Fucking crickets.

Nvidia. crashed twice more before the first race and it rebuilt shaders every time. Been playing for the last hour without crashes but I’m afraid to quit lol
Ironically I am on AMD and it only compiled shaders the first time I ran it.

Actually had a really good time with this tonight on PC.

It was a 7/10 last week im bumping it up to an 8 due to the fantastic online races. Absolutely saves the package for me. In a vacuum the online is 9.5/10.

Wow...I'm an idiot. I had only done the Builders intro and "Track Day" series

Thanks

A few things.

Didnt hate the idea of leveling up your car in SP and didnt understand the hate till.........Its a rain race and 21/23 of the AI are on rain tires and you stuck on street because of level! WTF!

Graphically not good enough. Your review mirriors in cockpit are decent but in chase cam they are just grey'd out! Same if you are passing a car their side mirriors are grey, not reflecting anything.

The racing line, raytrace reflecting off your paint in hood cam.

Also hate the control of a new car, they wont rotate in the corners, feels like shit till level 10ish, not sure what upgrade exactly but they finally control well. Makes the first 30mins with most new cars feel bad.

GT7 you hit "restart race" 1 sec loading screen your in your car. Here you hit "restart race" 2 sec load to hit "Race Again" 2 sec load to choose postion screen. 2 sec load to load track screen. 3 sec cutseen of all cars at staring line, now your in your car.

One thing thats not worse but just different is the racingline in GT7 is more of a suggested breaking line were here the racing line is MUCH more responsive. As soon as it turns from red to blue you prolly braked too much. Making the racingline too OP. In GT7 it more like "Heres a bunch of red on the ground of this hairpin, do what you want with this info."

yes achievements are pointless and for losers etc but would be nice if they gave more incentive to play multiplayer? there isn't even one achievement for winning a race. maybe win 100 races or something?

just did. no dice. 7 times building shaders now.

Why are the loading times so long in this game? I swear it takes over a minute to load the benchmark level, other tracks take 45 seconds to load, and simply quitting out of an event is a long 15 second load. or at least it feels like in the age of fast loading times.

i havent played many racing games this gen but the ones i have did not feel this bad.

RT on ultra with dlss is out of the question. ultra is a locked 60 fps with no rt. i might try high with rt on tomorrow but i am not noticing a big difference.

3080 - 11700k. 7.5GBps ssd.

on some tracks, with rt on and ultra settings with 4k dlss quality, i can get around 50 fps. but then other tracks, it drops back down to 40 fps with rt on and ultra settings.

ultra settings no rt with dlss off is an easy locked 60 fps. only 75-80% gpu usage. sometimes drops to 65%. RT is way too heavy in this game.
