Also, Calamity not being a prequel is revealed in the first scene, so no worries to anyone thinking they were spoiled.

I don’t know why, it’s just funny and nostalgic to me that people are still getting disappointed by that today. I remember being all excited to play with a friend, and realizing, ‘Oh...’.

At least you can jump forward two decades and play NSMB Wii or NSMB U now. I never got into the latter as much, but the former is genuinely some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing videogames. Maybe some of the hardest I’ve ever laughed (to the point where I actually cried, and had to pause to compose myself).

Multiplayer Mario for the first time was so magical, and it’s something I really don’t see get much credit. If NSMB did one thing that was it’s own, and innovative, and really bringing something to the series, it was this.

I've never tried it :messenger_hushed:
Still hoping it's implemented online in someway instead (outside of the broken Mario Maker 2 online). Local isn't really possible for me.

@InterMusketeer brings up good points.

I like the Age of Calamity story a lot, but a prequel this is not. It’s a brand new time-travel centered adventure in the world 100 years before BotW. It’s incredible to see how much Nintendo misled us, perhaps thinking that it would be a joyous surprise, and not realizing how much people just wanted a 1:1 retelling.

I’m excited to see where it all goes (especially if it affects BotW 2), and I’ve really had fun being in that era, and seeing more worldbuilding, but it’s a notable criticism of the game.

Also agree on content. Even without the DLC, original HW felt like it had more going on with the two adventure mode maps + the story. There’s a lot of cool side content here so far, but it’s not quite the same. For now, anyway.

But just having a brand-new sequel, with brand-new, improved everything, is pretty awesome for now. I really hope it’s supported in a similar way, and picks up years of content. I enjoyed original HW so much, for so long.

Though one can argue that AoC may or may not be a true prequel in the sense of the word, I think it still gives us lots of important information, character development and world building that I think were very necessary for the series. Furthermore, I think most people wouldn't have a problem piecing the elements that led to BotW together after playing AoC so... can we say it is not, by definition, a prequel?

For what it is worth, I think they did a great job. It's really tough to make a game that takes place shortly before BotW; if you're familiar with the events of BotW you KNOW it just doesn't make sense. Games are different than stories; there has to be a sense of progression and reward. There would be no point in playing a game with predetermined failure, especially when you know you're going to fail. It's just not fun.

Halo Reach did it pretty well, but that's just me being a bastard. You have a point.

Having finished Age of Calamity's story I will say that I enjoyed it, undoubtedly more than I would have enjoyed a straight 1-1 canonical retelling of the events leading up to BotW. That's a story we all already know.

That said, I doubt Nintendo's going to take any of AoC's events into account with BotW2's story. Maybe some tongue-in-cheek easter eggs.

Newly Vacant Newly Vacant did this work for you?
Amazon is up now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LPP9YTR/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Link is bi.
How do you feel about purple? Because, boy do I have a forum for you!

Wow. The game already looked like the Dream Works version of BOTW but that comparison is uncomfortable. People criticized Genshin Impact as Breath of the Waifu but at least that is its own thing.

It did work for me. I got one off of Amazon as well. I now have four copies. 😬

One copy is for someone else on another forum in case they couldn’t get it as they’ve been struggling. I got two orders, in person and shipping, from BB this morning and my BB preorder just arrived. The box is so big, -Arcadia- -Arcadia- might think that I painted a Series S black.

I can't call it a prequel, because it diverges too much, in what I've seen already, from the actual events in BotW's backstory.

I do agree that you get a wonderful sense of the time, and it adds to the world building of BotW, which I believe I mentioned. I love it, and it's a big recommend for BotW fans, but I can't look them honestly in the eye, and say this is the prequel you've been waiting for.

As far as failing... I don't know. Maybe that still happens in this game? I think it's an interesting challenge to take on. There's been others that achieved it to varying extents. Crisis Core, Halo Reach, and Shadow of the Collossus all did it, and did it well. I would like to see Nintendo's/Tecmo Koei's take.

For Sale: 4 Xbox Series X $5000

Are you keeping all four?
I got an Amazon order in. The Best Buy site kept erroring out on checkout. Thanks Evangelion Unit-01 Evangelion Unit-01 !
Perfect. Nintendo has mine ready to ship but GameStop is "still awaiting availability". Think I'll cancel that one. Danjin44 Danjin44 any luck in Canada?

If you think my posts are long normally don't get me started on Halo...

No, I’m going to keep two. I’ll probably wait to cancel until I have the second one in hand. I was able to help this other guy to get one off of Amazon.

Will Amazon US ship to Canada? If you really want a copy and I get both in the mail I'll make same offer I did for Newly Vacant Newly Vacant ; happy to sell it to you. No idea if shipping would be costly though...
It doesn’t matter, I decided to just get it digitally. It’s seems pre-ordering collector’s edition for any first party Nintendo games has become impossible task in Canada.

I'm playing Donkey Kong Country 2 forvtge first time right now and it's a very weird experience for me.

One of the first games I ever played was Donkey Kong Land 2 on the Gameboy, so playing the same game decades later but now it's in colour and has some slight differences is really freaking me out for some reason.

One of my best gaming memories ever is playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii with a bunch of friends on New Years Eve 2009. I don't care what anyone says about the New series, the multiplayer is one of the best things ever. Even the waggle for the helicopter move can't take that away.

I played the Wii version at a friend's place and when I found out you could throw the other players off the stage I nearly died laughing. Don't know how amused his daughter and he were, being thrown hither and thither, but it was one of the best gaming moments for me. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Well this both supports and discredits my theory.

They are patching/manipulating the game while it is running. The translation is all done at the emulation level rather than a newly translated rom; the rom itself is just the Japanese one.

What's absolutely bizarre is their choice to go with the Wii U VC emulator vs. the NES Classic/Switch emulator. As the article states, the Wii U emulator is largely inferior with the strange color issue that causes games to appear dark. Explains why the trailer looked so poor.

I was hoping that they were going be doing a larger update to the NES Classic/Switch emulator but that doesn't seem to be the case. At least I hope not now, I can't imagine and hope that they aren't going to move everything to the Wii U emulator.

Perhaps this is just an old proof of concept? Maybe they could still incorporate this sort of thing into Switch VC...

Yeah, it’s definitely disappointing, but I can modify my tv settings to make it better. In other news, BB already shipped my order from this morning. Wow!
Jealous. Last few times I’ve ordered from GameStop and Best Buy they’ve been slow. Hoping Nintendo or Amazon is fast for me...don’t know when I’ll actually get a moment to play it though.

Before playing the demo, I thought they were going to make the 4 Ganon Blights and rest of the villains playable in the final acts of the game. That made the most sense to me since they let you play as the villains in Hyrule Warriors 1 (although I think it was the main campaign just from their perspective) and would've allowed for at least 7 playable characters.

Having played through the game and unlocked a particular secret character I'm little surprised they didn't go that route, they definitely could've made it work gameplay wise, the direction they took seems unnecessary to me. I think they could've made an actual prequel if they had tried.

As I said before I'm cool with where it ended up since it was very hype and badass, but it was still disappointing that they did this.
