GAF's Nintendo Discussion, News, and Speculation |OT|

P5 Scramble looks nice, musou type game right? Hope it has some nice story-telling. Never tried musous before, but Age of Calamity Demo kinda made me interested, I really liked it. I just hope they will, one day, bring Persona 5 to the Switch. I never played an Atlus game before and I'm very much interested in SMTV.

I even thought of buying a cheap 3DS to play some past SMT, but dunno if I should (oh and Pokemon maybe).

Musou's are fanservice type games that may or may not be canon.

Apocalypse is the easiest SMT to get into after 3. That is on the 3DS give it a try.
From what I understood, SMT is a darker universe than Persona, is that right?

And Musou's kinda mindless button mashing is somehow quite relaxing, dunno why. Really liked what I played in AoC.

This is my first Nintendo console since the gameboy color, so this is all quite new to me.

That being said,4 (up until a certain point) is the prequel of Apocalypse but the later has better everything AND you are told what happened in 4.

3 is getting a remaster but it is sadly a cash grab on the Switch/Ps4. If you want to wait til next year we are getting 5 though.

Persona 1/2 were pretty dark but the mainline titles are basically punch Patrick Stewart in the face yes.

Hmmmm, so maybe I will wait for V and then if I really like it, grab a cheap 3DS to play the other games.

3 also looks good and if I understood Japanese I could already have it easily here but gonna wait for the English version. Still have a lot of games to play with my super limited time.

I've also been looking into going back to Pokemon but the new games look pretty meh. I used to love it and I remember drooling at Sun and Moon when it released on the 3DS but I never got to play them. These new ones look like a low-effort project but I might be wrong.

You could do that yes.

Switch will outsell PS5 and Xbox only because of supply constraints on the former. If PS5 and Xbox could meet demand the situation would be different. The early adopter rush is huge for game consoles. Switch might get outsold for a few months here and there based on how many units Sony and Microsoft are able to get to market.

In the long run I expect Switch to continue to outpace both consoles. I also expect both Xbox and Sony to outsell the previous gen. Sony might be a little tighter gen over gen if Xbox puts up a good fight this time around. Things like Game Pass and Bethesda will move the needle. But overhaul the industry growth is good for all parties. We just have to hope things don’t completely fall into the trap of politically motivated manipulative story telling that is currently taking over the rest of the entertainment industry.

This is why I may never even get a Ps5. Sony has a hard on for their western games and is still selectively censoring JPN games yet we have ugly ppl sex in their AAA game.

Don't believe the "supply constraints" talks that much. It's suboptimal, but shit's not a paper launch by any means.

Oh they're absolutely constrained. They could easily sell 4 or even 5 times as many units in Nov/Dec this year. The demand is heavily front weighted. The demand amongst early adopters is very inelastic. I wouldn't say it's suboptimal though. The issue is balancing that crazy front loaded demand with what will be the average demand 8 months from now. They can't invest into building out production now to not use what the build at fully capacity in the future.

I don't purchase games that attempt to prey and manipulate one's capacity for compassion in order to promote the idea that the free market doesn't work and that people's freedoms should because others are incapable of wielding their own agency. I'm not one to boycott things there are only 5 companies that I refuse to buy from. I absolutely skip out on politically manipulative stories that are thinly veiled as entertainment in short because they do not entertain me.

I think Sony is probably doing the right thing for their business by focusing on other markets. The censorship and narrative flaws are another issue and symptom of not being focused on all of the right attributes of the Western market. I wrote one of my typically wordy posts about it earlier in the Jim Ryan thread:

I've been saying for a while that Japan isn't a priority for Sony anymore but I think that is different from saying "Sony doesn't care about Japanese people" Kanye West style.

Japan is their second largest market. PS3 and PS4 both sold ~10MM units each there. PS4 sales were actually down compared to PS3, a console that had considerably more problems with price and Japan's slow response to the HD era. 10 million consoles isn't a bad install base but when you compare with the PS1 at ~20MM, PS2 at ~25MM, PSP at ~20, and even Vita at ~7MM the numbers don't look as good. Meanwhile Nintendo has seen a ton of success with the Wii, DS/3DS, and Switch. Switch has moved 16MM units in 3.5 years; over 60% more than PS4 in 7 years. More and more Japanese developers are shifting to Switch. Nintendo succeeded in capturing the handheld, mobile, and medium scope console market in Japan. The only games in Japan that are skipping Switch are the handful of HD releases like Final Fantasy.

All of that to say, there isn't a lot of potential for PlayStation to grow in Japan. They've been shrinking for a while actually. This is without the same level of competition that they had in the early days; Sega is out of the picture and Microsoft hasn't even made a dent in the market since the original Xbox which actually wasn't a complete flop. Sony has seen a ton of growth in the West on the other hand. They've been growing steadily in the rest of the globe. For Sony investing in these reasons provides a much better ROI. They're seeing more growth opportunities in other markets and it would wiser to allocate resources that way. As a result they've repositioned the console as a global one with the move to to the West, the X/O change, the censorship incidents, the reduction in the Japan Studio, etc are all more evidence that Sony is positioning PS as a global console and not one as rooted in Japan.

That is not to say that Sony is giving up on Japan. They'll continue to invest in big titles like Final Fantasy and I could see them inking a deal on Persona 6 as well. Japan Studio will continue to function as a publisher of sorts for exclusive Japanese developed titles. Those games make a big impact in markets outside of Japan as well. They'll work to hold Japan as a ~10MM unit market but they're pushing for growth in other areas.

You should absolutely buy into supply constraints. It's an industry wide problem for tech OEMs due the insane demand for a world centered around staying at home.

I disagree, Sony for the last 4 years has shown nothing but malice towards the Japanese dev. Truly nu gamers will buy their games and they will see profits but at what cost? Another 3rd person shooter exclusive?

FF is squeenix and Atlus is gonna do whatever they want. Ultimately things will come to Nintendo/PC so no skin off my snek.

And they're still able to produce units enough to outsell the predecessors? I'm sorry, but if I ate a sandwich and now I only have a single slice of bread, I'm not going to OUTBREAD it.

Their focus is concerning for me as I'm just not into the brunt of their focus, but they still deliver enough Japanese experiences to keep me on board.

Do they? (looks at own ps4 library) none of these games bar BB/GR2 (lol) are backed by Sony and are 3rd party titles. We will know by next year whether they stay political/arrogant or they'll go back to better days.

Bloodborne, Everybody's Golf, Nioh, Nioh 2, Dragon Quest XI + Builders , Final Fantasy VIIR, GT:Sport, SF:V, Yakuza (almost the complete series + Fist of the North Star and Judgment), Persona 5, Catherine, Nier Automata, Nier Remake (not out yet), Wattam, 428 Shibuya Scramble, Chaos Child, SOTC, TLG, Zone of the Enders, Kojima's package delivery service.

Some of those came from Japan Studios and others are exclusives from Japanese studios (some limited).

Oh yeah I forgot about Nioh 2. Everything else is a multiplat though.

We knew you were shitting but you could have made it less obvious by not mentioning a western studio raping a japanese game.

But Nintendo is? Doesn't this even out?

SOTCR is fine aside from the character models. They did the same shit with DeSo. I just listed Japanese gams on my PS4 right now.

Nintendo deals with constraints too.

Not even close. Maybe the stuff you are interested in.

I had already mentioned BB. My OG post mentioned 3rd party stuff as well. 🍵

I'm not trying to sell you on a PS4. Like I said, their focus of late has pushed me farther and farther away but they still get enough Japanese games that interest me to give me faith in continuing on with the platform. I just mentioned the games I enjoy and have on my PS4 at the moment. There is other stuff out there that I'm less interested in like Gravity Rush, Aegis Rim, etc. I also don't see multi-platform as a knock. Sony will always have a foothold in Japan so we'll see Japanese games developed for the platform (exclusive or not).

New chips are notoriously difficult to manufacture. It's why people talk about yield rate and the like early during a gen. 3080s, 5900X, Xbox, and PS 5 are all sold out right now largely driven by the fact that it takes a while for production to mature around new products and the crazy initial demand. It will slow down to a normal level after a while.

This is making me itch to grab a whiteboard and some draw some supply and demand curves but essentially right now they are making as many units as they possibly can because so many people want one up front. Demand will slow down dramatically after the first 6 months or so. Same reason you might recall Switch being hard to find for a few months or a new phone selling out for a month or so.

Nintendo has the luxury of mature production with Switch being over three years old now. It's a lot easier to manufacture a Switch in 2020 than it is a PS5 just by merit of it being older tech with a proven production process. That said they have absolutely sold out at various points in the past few months. Switch is actually sold out at a lot of US retailers right now. They've been popping in and out of stock but usually sell out in a couple hours. I just checked Amazon-none available at retail price right now. Just resellers.

I think malice is a bit hyperbolic. I would lean more towards disinterest. I can think of a few instances where Sony pushed on their third party partners with ridiculous requirements and censorship but while it might be a poor way of doing business I wouldn't consider it to be contemptuous. Censorship and the like is abhorrent but they haven't committed that grave of a sin yet. If it were malice they wouldn't still have third party partners.

As bender bender mentioned they still have a lot of Japanese exclusives either through merit of being the only "HD" console in the Japanese market, by virtue of long standing partnerships, or through timed exclusivity deals. Japan is still 10% of their business. They won't turn their back on the whole country that easily. They'd like to maintain the ~10MM units they sell there but they are looking to really expand or grow in that market. They'll make more money by reallocating funding to other projects. Much more opportunity for growth in North America, Europe, South America, and the Middle East right now.

Sony fell into a rut in Japan and couldn't figure out a clear path forward. Nintendo has done better because they were able to both capture multiple segments of the Japanese-handheld, mobile, and console (basically everything but the big HD releases) and really capture the attention of the West as well.

Switch + PC is absolutely the best way to play JPN games right now. PS5 might be necessary for the odd exclusive but it isn't the necessity that it was 10 years ago. Sony isn't done with Japan but I think we will see their involvement there wane over time.

Why doesn't Xaero Gravity Xaero Gravity speak to me anymore? Is it because the Raptors got BTFO by the glorious Boston Celtics?

Then why is the PS5 theoretically beating the PS4?

You mean in terms of PS4 launch vs PS5 launch? Market has grown so they've invested in more production over the past gen. Demand for PS5 is way higher than it was for PS4. If they were only putting out PS4 numbers this time around the prices on eBay would be even higher than the 2X they are now.

Based on what? Market hasn't grown 2x from PS3 to PS4, why is it so from PS4 to PS5? Especially considering how strong Nintendo has been and how Microsoft has at least a hail mary for now.
