GAF's Nintendo Discussion, News, and Speculation |OT|

First, before I forget, welcome (back, maybe) to NintendoGAF!

Second, I do wonder what Skyward Sword would be like after Breath of the Wild. I played it on the Wii, and I remember being frustrated by the overlong tutorials and hand-holding. I can't imagine what that would be like now, after the openness of Breath of the Wild. Wind Waker seems like a good fit for the Switch, as the art-style holds up and the gameplay is still solid. I don't know about anything else. Maybe Nintendo would release a GB VC with Age of Oracles and Age of Seasons?

I think Skyward Sword is so much fun, it’d be just fine. The thing is, it knows what is — a highly linear, gamey game, even compared to other entries in the series — and takes full advantage of that with really enjoyable ideas throughout.

If they can figure out the motion control stuff in a fun way, it’s probably my most desired Switch transfer. The second I finished it, I was sad it was over, and wanted to play it all over again.

I'm not going to lie. While I was looking up a GIF for Eevee86 Eevee86 , there was a lot of internal confusion going on. Enjoy the GIFs I didn't use.

I'm a day late, but wow, that last one looks both ridiculous and dope as fuck, where is it from? Asking for a friend of course... if I had one :messenger_loudly_crying:

You know I was thinking about this when they announced AoC out of the blue and I figured that Nintendo was originally planning on sitting on it until February to kick off the 35th Anniversary for Zelda and Mario 3D World was supposed to go in that slot in November. Nintendo has been known to sit on finished games to put them into a time slot when they have a void. My guess was once they realized that Mario was going to slip they knew they had to have something for November and AoC was planned to be finished or near finished by then making it a great contender.

Would also explain why they’ve held off on announcing the inevitable AoC season pass - they probably originally thought they had a few more months to work on it before the game released.

I think I mentioned a few weeks back that I've been (very slowly) playing through it again and it's kind of remarkable how linear and I guess you could say restrictive Skyward Sword is compared to Breath of the Wild, which came right after it (not counting A Link Between Worlds, which even itself wasn't as rigidly structured as Skyward Sword).

I do like it quite a bit though. I hope they can figure out something to do with the controls and get it out on Switch. Split joycons works okay for Mario Galaxy but I gotta say I don't really like the handheld or pro controller setups for that game.

I think Skyward Sword is what happens when:

1: People are telling you that your ten year old design that’s underpinned four games is getting a bit long in the tooth
2: Your hardware can’t handle the most obvious evolution for Zelda, open worlds
3: Your dev team is absolutely locked in their old way of thinking

They had to find ways to innovate within a very rigid structure and break themselves out of a pattern, which is one of the hardest things you can do as a creative.

This is the result. The weirdest proper Zelda game ever, that largely innovates laterally.

By the time they’d gotten to BotW, and past another game with crazy experiments, they had the hardware, and the mindset, to do something incredible.

I keep thinking about open world Wii games in relation to stuff like GTA3 and the like on the PS2 and XBox, but then I remember that Skyward Sword came out on the Wii in goddamn 2011, three years after GTA4, one year after Just Cause 2. What a weird generation.

Yeah. The even more unfavorable comparison is that it came out in the same holiday season as Skyrim.

My next big Switch games are 3D World and MH Rise. This year was kind of a dud year for my Switch ownership compared to the previous two, but not awful. Picked up a few games like Mario Maker 2 and Luigi's Mansion 3 but neither really catch my attention (the kids love em though).

Just to clarify... I called Jonesy in Smash first. :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_beaming: There should be a couple Nintendo related things this year. Even with a different year, I still expect we'll see a couple things, as the last three years had a couple Nintendo exclusive things each year.

I could easily see something like Jonesy for Smash, the rumored Samus in Fortnite, and some third party exclusive we haven't heard about. That seems like it's been about par for the course that they've had the last few years (a smaller reveal and new DLC info or info on a game we already knew about).

I don't hate Fortnite. I think it has done a lot to make other companies see the value in different pricing and update models. Gameplay wise there isn't anything that excites me and I don't find it particularly engaging. The merit is largely in the constant updates and large playerbase. At this point the game seems like it is just one massive Star Wars/Marvel advertisement filled with 12 year olds flossing. Like some sort of massive corporate branded Miley Cyrus/Justin Bieber concert circa 2009.

On the other hand, Fortnite has been one of the best things to happen to me since I play a lot of FPS games online. The great digital daycare. Teammates and communication have improved in other games and my eardrums remain intact.

I’ve never played Fortnite, but getting a character in Smash would be a huge deal, like Steve, even if I didn’t like it. I’m for it if it is done well and brings in more people to the Nintendo fold.
This is my thought as well. It continues to enhance the crossover aspect of Smash. It's the same type of appeal as having Samus in Fortnite, as it can only build awareness for the brand, and with the game seemingly having a resurgence with the new season, I think it makes any potential crossover even better. Way too many get wrapped up in their own feelings on things (really don't see that from people in here, for the most part, just good natured joshing), and let their feelings overwhelm them taking a good birdseye view of the situation.

Good example of this was Max Dood's reaction to Steve. His initial reaction was a flippant "oh good grief" style take, but he was also able to see the bigger picture, and see how it made sense.

Course, good discourse not devolving into emotional ranting? Heaven forbid that should happen regarding video games.

That's an awesome pickup. I'm not really into "special editions" simply for the fact I have no room to keep all the items that usually come with them.

This Ori one though.....man it's beautiful! Please post some pictures of yours when you get it HollowKnight HollowKnight 👍
Yeah it does, will do, but like i said. they mailed me and said i might not receive it before the holidays. Which is a bummer.

I'll never begrudge a Smash selection unless too many picks go to a single series or type of gamer, which has happened at some points. Each character, even something as niche as Terry Bogard, means something special to someone, and that's what this series has been all about since the beginning.

Of course, Fort is probably entrenched as my second favorite game ever at this point, so I'm one of those people, and can attest how cool it would be for it to make it to Smash, and just how much it would set a nuke off in the wider gaming world.

Off Topic. Is it me or did all the sweaty players return this season? I have had a tough time winning with my normal group.

Excellent points. I counter with a threat: if jonesy is in smash i will blast your inbox with busty catgirl lewds

I wasn't thrilled about the Minecraft addition. Not because I dislike Minecraft, on the contrary, I think it is a phenomenal game and there isn't any denying how huge it is. I just didn't think it was a good fit as I thought the touchpoint with the game for most is the interaction with the world and other players and not Steve. To me, Minecraft is about a blocky vista and soft ambient music, not about Steve. Simply put, Steve is boring but Minecraft is fun.

That said, I think the Smash team did a fantastic job with bringing elements of Minecraft into Smash. They pulled off something I didn't expect by bringing the world of Minecraft into Smash and like I said, the world of Minecraft is the touchpoint for players.

Fortnite I am not sold on at all. I'm not sure that people are that connected with the characters nor are they connected with the world. I would imagine that when most people think about Fortnite they think about skins/emotes, events, and intense fights. I don't know...personally I don't see it working as I'm not sure how they would bring those elements into Smash. Then again, I didn't see how they could bring the environment interaction of Minecraft into Smash either. Personally, I'd also rather have another Nintendo character to promote one of their own brands more.

Yeah, it works for goofball characters like Game and Watch and Piranha Plant because they're associated with Nintendo. I'd say those two have more personality than Steve. Doesn't help that Sakurai himself didn't seem particularly excited about the inclusion, even if he loves Minecraft.

Yep. That was my original complaint. Steve is completely devoid of personality but Minecraft's world is full of it. I thought a stage would be better but they did well to incorporate the world into the character.

Most Nintendo characters have a lot of personality so it usually makes even a ridiculous addition like Piranha Plant work.

There's a handful of Fort characters that stick out as the most constantly popular.

Something like that as various costumes for the Smash character is probably the way to go, and would please many.

Additionally, this season's story is all about an organization and character (which could be the Smash rep) that's going around to every reality, recruiting the best hunters (from The Mandalorian, to Kratos, to Master Chief), to help stop a very crazy sci-fi multiple reality thing that it's better if I don't explain. Lol.

So there's actually a shot for a legit, story-based crossover, in the plot. It makes sense to recruit the Smash Bros, and maybe have some Nintendo characters in Fort in return.

I wouldnt count on it, but if BotW2 was going to re-emerge anywhere, with next E3 in doubt, it would make a ton of sense for this very western appealing game to appear at a very western leaning show, where its predecessor did multiple times, in advance of its probable (it's about that time) release next year.

I just think the first time we see BoTW 2 actual gameplay will be in a Nintendo only event early next year, but like I said it would be great to be wrong.
yeah makes sense also. it's sad they just cancelled real directs. I guess the change in presidency affected this.
or this damn pandemic.

I think its mostly the pandemic shifting first party games release dates. There was a handful of games supposed to release this year and got pushed. 2021 Will be a lot better. In my opinion I think directs may return as soon as January.
