Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

SlimySnake

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Would you rather have a 100+ hour sprawling RPG, or a shorter, less ambitious title with cutting edge graphics? Studios have budgets, and unless you are Rockstar games or CDPR, you are going to have to find ways to balance everything. Gameplay>>>>>Graphics

Also, KCD2 is not a bad looking game at all. Pretty much every previewer has said the game looks damn good when playing
I dont want 100 hour games anymore with a checklist of things to do. I am doing that right now and its literally worse than some of the worst PS3 era ubisoft games. I have yet to play a 100 hour game that isnt the same 10 hours repeated 10 times over.

If their excuse for last gen looking character models is that they wanted a 100 hour game where you get to mop floors and play checkers with hookers then thats not a very good excuse.

This is a game with A LOT of cutscenes. You cant be phoning in character models like that.

Represent.

Has anyone else played the First Berserker: Khazan demo??

It looks fucking amazing, best Cel-Shading I have ever seen in my life

The games not for you then. It's a mideval simulator. People will spend many 100's or even 1000+ hours in KCD2. Cutting edge graphics is not the priority. The game looks very good for the scope of the game. Again, every studio has a budget. This is Warhorse's first AAA game. Maybe if this game pops off, you'll get the graphics you want in their next project

Well I didn't mean it should be done in the multiplayer like Chivalry. I play M&B for the campaign. Nor that it should be exactly this with the hundreds of troops in a siege simulated in all that detail, though it could probably be reasonably close for those you personally engage with. M&B did a lot of simy stuff with its combat 15 years ago too with how trajectories and overall movement, on foot or on horse, affected the damage output etc., it just needs an upgrade already. I wouldn't mind if that also meant a reduction in the total troops, late game huge battles with multiple armies are a chore.
I think the devs want to further improve the physics, they don't wanna take even half step back to make the game more malleable for lack of better words.

I think there could be some fun to be found if they make a comprhensive gladiator experience, they were talking about some light narrative aswell, like having a patron that doens't make your interests or stuff like that.

I can't even max out the game even if the graphic is like ps3\early ps4 level (except for the knight armours that look super realistic somehow) with a monster pc, this is how heavy the game is with just 2 characters inside an arena.

The characters look pretty meh, but now compare the enviroments in all these games (you know the stuff that makes up 95%+ of the games) and KCD2 wins against TLOU2 and easily wipes the floor with the other 2.

Not every game is hyperfocused on characters and the obsession with just comparing them and declaring a game as a whole good looking or bad based on just a single aspect is completely baffling. (this part is more of a meta commentary about this whole thread being filled with stupid takes like this)

Youre comparing a single good aspect of Detroit and Death Stranding with the weakest aspect of KCD2. Outside of TLOU2 (which primarily has nice attention to detail and good execution going for it) the overall graphics of these games are below average and KCD looks a good bit above average for AAA games.

I am not comparing KC2 to RDR2. RDR2 and GTA6 are one off games that take 5-7 years to make with the entire 3,000 person 7 studio strong teams.
I am comparing a 250 dev team to other similar and smaller studios.
I am comparing 6+ year dev cycles.
I am comparing last gen games designed around 1.8 tflops while this game is a next gen only game build around 10 tflops with RT capable consoles.
I am comparing cinematic games with a cinematic RPG that is full of mocapped cutscenes. Just like the first game.

Of course they have access to mocap. Have you played the first game? The cutscenes are massive and fully mocapped and animated. If anything, they are even bigger in the sequel. They just didnt do a great job updating the character models. The CG trailer they revealed just shows how dated it looks.

I never compared KC1 to Detroit or TLOU2 because that wouldve been unfair. But they have access to at least 7x more GPU power now. They are no longer a small kickstarter studio. They had 6+ years of dev time. They dont get to make excuses anymore.

Yeah yeah, while ignoring my only 2 points: talent and budget.

Do you go to the Sistine Chapel and say "why cant other shit look this good?".

My brother, the answer should be obvious: 'cause few people have the talent, time and budget for making masterpieces like that.

It's simple as that

Those are some of the most talented people in the industry, with Sony budgets and high end tech at their disposal.

Making comparisons only considering number of devs, time and hardware is a juvenile take, to say the least.

Yeah yeah, while ignoring my only 2 points: talent and budget.
I discussed those two points on the last page. We agree on talent or lackthereof.

At the end of the day, its about talent. Some devs try. Others are lazy and phone in the visuals. Some devs are criticized for being lazy like the Star Wars outlaws devs last year. Some arent because they are in good standing with the gaming audience. I criticize them all regardless of their political stance.
As for the budget, see below:
Intergallatic is being made by 250 devs. SSM teams are also around 250 devs.

100 devs made Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone. Bluepoint, Housemarque are also smaller sub 100 dev teams. only GG, Insomniac and nowadays SSM are approaching 400-500 devs but they all work on multiple projects.

At the end of the day, resources in video games = artists, engineers and developers + time. KC2 devs had 6+ years and the same amount of devs, and blew it.

The sistine chapel analogy is interesting because i just played a game by a Chinese developer that made their first game ever, and were able to top ND. I also just played a game by Bloober, literally a C-tier developer who were able to create a stunning looking game of their own.

The wonderful thing about games is that the technology improves every generation. They arent limited by their imagination like the artists of the renaissance era, but by the hardware. KC2 devs should've done more with the hardware especially considering the fact that they had 6+ years and 250 devs to go off of.

if we are going to shit on AC Shadows like we were doing just yesterday, and Star Wars outlaws last year, then KC2 should not get a pass just because they 'only' had 6 years and 250 devs to make a last gen looking game.

I am only hyperfocused on the character models because of the CG tv spot that was just posted was literally mounted on the character faces. if you want to discuss the things that the game does right, feel free. I wouldnt mind indulging in that discussion. I have discussed it before and while there are some bright spots, and while it does seem like an upgrade from the previous game, its not as good looking as I expected it to be. IIRC, i called it a souped up RDR2 which isnt exactly an insult considering RDR2 is considered the best looking game of the last generation.

This is a game with A LOT of cutscenes and having them phone in character models is bizarre.

My intention was mainly to point to Death Strading and Detroit being lackluster outside of the character department rather than to discuss KCD2, but now that were at it your RDR2 comparison is pretty spot on.

Theyve done a great job of capturing the realistic look, but ultimately it kind of looks a bit boring (i am a bit biased against realism) because of that direction, even more so than RDR2, but i am looking forward to taking a city tour in-game and then in person to see how well it holds up.

Feels like CryEngine got outdone by UE5 a bit, but it makes me wonder if even Crytek can beat UE5 top dogs with Crysis 4.
This is a game with A LOT of cutscenes and having them phone in character models is bizarre.
Thats fair, but almost inevitable for a game on this scale with so called real NPC schedules and likely a much smaller budget than similar games from Ubisoft or Sony. Given how many will wear helmets or hats id still say it was one part where it makes sense to put less effort.

May not apply to yo but.
Feels like a lot of people are dead set on playing open worlds in a way directly opposite to how they want to have fun.
When I get an openworld I lock in on the main quest first and foremost, he world is a background that I can choose to get lost in and explore, for different games i do this to different degrees.
But it feels like people are acting like they are forced to 100% every game they get and then complain about there being too much content when they are often free tto ignore almost all of it and would have the pretty fast paced experience they are looking for.

Now if the core experience has shit combat or something and the map and ignoring sidecontent makes the game a mess I get that, but its not been the case in the games I played, actually my ctiticism is usually that if I am loving an openworld i get punished for exploring too much cause the difficulty is lowered a ton.

Shits all over Doom Dark Ages imo
Doom supports RTGI so i think it will be a bit more consistent. Sometimes Space Marine 2 looks fairly last gen. Especially indoor areas that didnt get a lot of love.

The path tracing mode will also make it look completely different. Sadly, only around 5% of the pc userbase can play it and i guess 2.5% of the overall userbase. Definitely wont be me, i am not spending $1,000 on a 5080 just for 50% more performance.

GTA 6 will run at 30fps on console, former GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 animator expects

and your best shot at 60fps may be hoping for PC

Speaking on Kiwi Talkz, Mike York sets his expectations after being asked if Rockstar will shoot for 30fps or 60fps for GTA6. "I don't know if they'll be able to pull off 60fps," York says. "I don't think so. I think they're gonna be shooting for 30fps – and a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that. They're gonna try to optimize as much as they can to where it never goes below 30. But it can be bumped up to 40, 41, 52, whatever, and I bet you, like, later, once it's on PC, it'll probably get super optimized and changed and new graphics cards that come out and you'll be able to run it at 60fps probably at that time."

"I don't think [the] initial release it'll come out at 60fps unless it's getting those 60fps by [using] an AI upscaler thing like the PlayStation is doing, unless something is coming in and helping it get those 60fps," York explains. "I don't think it'll get the 60fps raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don't think so."

unless Rockstar is mazing the fuck out of the CPU, i think 60 fps is still possible. This is not like the Jaguar PS4 days where they were just bottlenecked by a netbook cpu. if you downgrade the resolution enough, you will get a 60 fps mode.

The question is do they want to have 75% of the player play at low quality settings at 720p for this masterpiece they worked on 7 years crafting. 99% of the developers are ok with it which is why they all add 720p 60 fps modes. But is Rockstar one of them? I guess we are about to find out.

Herman getting demoted is hilarious. But he shouldve been fired. They need to do more than just a 180. They need to remove everyone who thought investing in gaas was a good idea. And Herman was Jimbo's right hand man. If he didnt have the balls to steer his CEO in the right direction then he should not be leading the WWS right now. Guy should immediately be replaced by someone like Ted price.

Not replaying. Just trying to finish it. Left it last year after reaching this insane 2 hour stretch where i did nothing but mini games, but went back to it after you brought it up and youtube started recommending a lot of combat videos.

I dont know how much more i can take it. Just finished doing an open world with like 30 copy paste side quests only for them to take me to the forest region with its own 30 check list of things to do.

Aside from combat, I cant find a single redeeming thing about this game.

I tried Indiana Jones on my Series X and I don't think it looks that good though I've only just started walking around the Vatican in the day time. It's blurry for an 1800p image and the character models and their clothes are kinda mid. Indy's face looks fairly good I guess.

I also bought Horizon Forbidden West for my PS5 Pro and again I'm only early days in that game but so far, other than the image quality, it isn't crazy impressive to me. It looks like a highly advanced PS4 era game but one which is already starting to look dated. Star Wars Outlaws' lighting is far ahead of Forbidden West. Maybe it will get more impressive as I play more though.

HFW has its moments. The jungle, plainsong, the island, and some beach mountain regions look absolutely amazing. The water tech is also great. However, its a PS4 game through and through. You can watch side by side of the PS4 version and outside of hero lighting on aloy and better draw distance on foliage, it is virtually identical.

Outlaws has its own issues, but the lighting is far more consistent and interiors look amazing.

Sorry about that :messenger_beaming:
But I felt it needed to be brought up since it released on PC and everyone said it looks so much better than Remake, lol.

Also Square advertised it with that improved bogus lighting, which is just in the opening area, also pointed in the new DF video, don't know if you've seen it.

My opinion sort of the same, I see it as a positive that the combat is good, at the end of the day that should take center stage.
I enjoyed some of the mini games and distraction, I just can't fathom the reasoning behind mini games on the main story path.

Yo SlimySnake SlimySnake , am i going crazy or this game has the most realistic looking armour ever? not the details but the material reflections (not even how detailed the reflections are, just the look), it actually look like metal, or you think it looks too clean and reflective??

I have only seen armor in movies and they are never that reflective.

I liked the armors in Demon Souls yes. I just wish they had some kind of RT reflections on them to help them pop a bit more.

lol nah, im glad i did. I still like the combat, and im glad youtube was 'listening' on gaf and started recommending me those videos because i was playing it completely differently and it just wasnt fun and way too hectic. now i can at least make some sense of it thanks to those youtube videos which were not exactly around back at launch when everyone was learning the new combat system.

What's weird is that they did deliver better lighting in the FF7 Remake's PC version and were able to port those back to the PS5 version of the game. I dont understand why after a full year of development, they werent able to fix the lighting issues in this game. It's simply adding more lights and baking them in. You literally did exactly that with the last game.

Mini games should never be part of the main campaign, but here we are. BTW, I didnt know this and I wish I did. You can skip the card game when you get on the cruise ship. The game tells you to keep playing the game until you win the tournament which can be 5-6 games. But you dont have to. Just play one game and you can go to the hostess and skip the rest. I hate the card game so that one hour was really brutal.

UE4 received many upgrades over the years. Most recently it got support for Ray tracing which was heavily used in Callisto and Star Wars Jedi Survivor to great effect.

FF7 developers are just morons.

just some screenshots in my uploads. Wanted to post indoor shots to show just how good indoor lighting can look in UE4. Outdoors the game mostly looks fine in terms of lighting. it's the Level of detail and their awful texture streaming system thats the main reason for those hilarious rock textures and foliage screenshots that you see posted everywhere.

It's just as you said and what I've also gathered from the interviews, poor time management and they took a fairly long game for the time it was released in (IMO) and split it in 3.
It was clear the game was going to suffer for this so I think there's no point in wondering anymore aside for giggles, and I think part 3 is gonna have the same problems.

Yeah, I saw that you could skip that, but I thought that I would get a reward or something and also have this problem in games, if it has that something, if I like it the gameplay/combat, I gotta search everywhere, do everything, it's like a disease.

Agree to disagree, I didn't have the opportunity to play the OG, I played different games, more straightforward, so maybe it's a matter of habit.
Or maybe it's just a matter of taste and I'm wrong, whatever, even so, that was then, this is now, anyway, I've said my piece with this so I don't wanna pollute this thread with this.

Jesus, those clouds in the last screens are orgasmic. To think these are volumetric clouds in a day/night cycle open world game, to me it's amazing.

Compare these to FF7 static skybox, almost all games really, I mean you can't, there's no comparison. And I could run this max 4K on my mediocre Ryzen 5600x and RTX 4070.

I love this baseball game from Konami. I cant believe Konami made the best looking sports game this gen. I love the animations, the lighting, the presentation. Everything is so fucking brilliant. And this is just at 1080p. I want to buy a PS5 Pro just for this game.

MLB dropped last gen this year and apparently the biggest upgrade the series got last gen was when they dropped PS3 so its possible we might get an MLB game looking this good.

It's crazy to imagine we could have a new Winning Eleven/PES game looking like that. Instead Konami chose to turn the series into another trash GaaS. Gaming is in a really sad place this gen.

UE4 received many upgrades over the years. Most recently it got support for Ray tracing which was heavily used in Callisto and Star Wars Jedi Survivor to great effect.

FF7 developers are just morons.

All these games below are UE4.

This made me laugh. Nixxes allows PC gamers to turn off Ray traced Reflections which are mandatory in the PS5 version, and this is the result.

Honestly, i like it. There is no fallback solution the devs have to focus on. No artists wasting their time aligning reflections. Hope they had gone with dynamic GI as well, but i guess thats coming in Wolverine.

Days Gone.
