IGN: PS5 is outselling Xbox Series X/S 5:1

Spencer has a boss too. I don't know what the purpose of the ABK acquisition was, but now it just feels it has nothing to do with Xbox. Maybe Microsoft just wanted to grow into huge publisher, period. Spencer trying to paint everything they do as in favor of "the health of Xbox" is obviously just PR talk.
It's a pivot towards game publishing and dev as the core (and soon to be only) pillar of the business.

They only kept talking up the benefits to the Xbox console business because how else will you get the masses to descend onto discussion forums and sending supportive emails to regulators?

Like who else is gonna do that if not Xbox fans? MS Excel enthusiasts? Bobby Kotick fans?

Microsoft is pathetic. I don't see much chance for them to have successful next gen console. Series consoles didn't have fuck ups that Xbox One had and they still failed (even harder).

Imagine thinking this is the case.

  • They launched the Series without a single flagship title with Halo Infinite being delayed til 2021
  • Halo Infinite underperformed
  • They had no flagship title for Holiday Season 2022 with Starfield being delayed til 2023
  • Starfield underperformed
  • Their flagship title for 2024 was announced multiplatform before release in Indiana Jones, it was also a faulty project from the get go
  • Forza Motorsport reboot failed along with pretty much every major game they've dropped this generation like Redfall

They've fucked up consistently since 2020. Convinced that multiplatform games would simply play better on Xbox Series and that the cheaper entry price for the Series S (300 at launch) would win the day, despite it being so close in price to the PS5 Digital (400 at launch).

I perosnally don't feel Sony deserve the sales they are receiving this gen and I think their fans are far too soft on them as a business. Sony fans should be demanding free cloud saves and other benefits but that's another convo. The ps5 has clearly done what ever it needed to do to kill off Xbox but I dont think it's going to be sunshine and roses from here on out, unfortunately. But, maybe I'm just bitter and old 😉

You're definitely bitter. Despite people downplaying Sony's games, they've continued a tremendous track record

  • Spider-Man Miles Morales
  • Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Astro Bot
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Helldivers 2
Even their less successful endeavors have eclipsed Microsoft's as have their remakes/remasters

  • The Last of Us Part 1
  • Demon's Souls
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
  • Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
  • Returnal
  • Stellar Blade
  • Rise of the Ronin

Context matters.

They thought they'd be able to take ABK exclusive but they ran into regulatory constraints. By the time the deal was over, not only did they not have the option of taking CoD exclusive, but Xbox Series sales had evaporated.

If they had been successful in closing on ABK earlier and if they had been able to make CoD exclusive to Xbox even for a year, there could have been a big migration to Xbox. Especially earlier on in the generation before people had made their choice.

Then you had plans for Microsoft to have their own mobile store which hasn't come to fruition.

They also had many xCloud ambitions which were also curtailed by the ABK deal. They would probably have bought Ubi Soft, but they're restricted from buying them due to the ABK deal.

They can't buy Ubisoft for 15 years and they have a 10 year multiplatform agreement for CoD.

The reality of what a "Console War" is, and how to fight it, is why things turn out the way it is.

It is true that exclusives are important to attract customers. But it is also true that exclusives are less effective at doing that the longer the console generation drags on.

Fundamentally the argument is that most people would not buy both an Xbox and a PlayStation. So if someone made a purchase decision, that person is no longer free to change sides easily until next gen. Covid threw Xbox a bone by restricting PS5 production, so people were forced to give Xbox a look. But once the production was restored the difference in install base start to pull away.

In my personal opinion,. the biggest difference besides Xbox failures to launch with a good Halo game, is the consecutive accidental timed exclusive of Balder's Gates 3, and currently still ongoing delayed release of Black Myth Wu Kong. I dare say these were the biggest games of their respective launch years, and Xbox just had no answer for why their hardware can't handle them.

Sony didn't have the best game output this console generation. But if you throw Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 into the mix, I would say that ended up being enough of a lead that Xbox can't recover from.

You don't have to be at your best, you just had to be better than your opponent.

And now, half the generation had came and gone, and the winner has been decided. The key to console wars is that once we know who won, there is no turning back.

I don't understand. why are people surprised? I mean Microsoft pretty much did this to themselves. People acting like it's a huge victory for Sony when MS pretty much ran that division into the ground.

A lot of people want to disavow Sony of their success, but it wasn't simply Microsoft making unforced errors. They were forced into a corner by a well run organization.

  • Sony made the decision to discontinue the PS4 and PS4 Pro even though they probably could have sold more units at a lower cost
  • They were able to successfully alleviate supply chain issues to get PS5s available sooner than Microsoft, including the decision to flood the US market in 2023 and prioritize supply for the most competitive markets
  • They made several investments into the PS5 Family where Microsoft did nothing except double down on GamePass
    • PSVR2
    • PS Portal
    • PS5 Pro/PSSR
      • They have the midgen market exclusively to themselves
    • Dual Sense
  • They made a much more efficiently designed system, with many decisions they were criticized in real time about such as the internal storage expansion vs a plug-and-play solution, resulting in a much cheaper storage expansion solution and more often than not games perform better on PS5 than XSX
  • The decision to go with a digital only model rather than a step down model and priced it relatively aggressively
  • Secured several high value exclusive titles; Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2. They successfully ensured high value exclusive titles every year the PS5 has been on the market
  • Expanded their relationship with Marvel to include additional Spider-Man games as well as Wolverine/X-Men games making the PlayStation the unofficial Marvel console which certainly reflects in Marvel Rivals playerbase and if rumors are true they've done the same with Rocksteady/WB and Batman
  • A far more successful transmedia strategy highlighted by The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, and Uncharted
  • They didn't overreact to MLB pushing for a multiplatform MLB game and kept revenues coming in at high levels
  • A more successful PC strategy

Exactly. That poster has it completely backwards. Yeah, the Xbox One was a major fuckup, but by the end of the generation Xbox was moving in the right direction. The Xbox One X was far and away the best console platform to play games on, the BC program was killing it with making more of your library available, and the enhancement of many games giving them higher resolution/fps was amazing. From a hardware and total game library standpoint the last generation had a lot of us looking forward to what they did next and Microsoft has nothing but drop the ball over and over again this generation. Saying that they didn't fuck up like with the One is laughable, because they've fucked up far worse. Not only did they do the same dumb shit they did last generation, but they have ZERO hardware to compete, zero BC program, zero enhancements to bail them out. Hell, even Gamepass is worse than it was last gen.

This gen has been, by far, worse for Xbox than the last and it's not even close.

At least Xbox One had exclusives, they weren’t great, but they were there.

Xbox Series has nothing to really separate itself apart from Gamepass, no exclusives, no power advantage like One X.

Just a soulless console devoid of purpose.

Yeah, this gen is what the last gen would have been without exclusives, without BC, without enhancements, without the HDR stuff, and without better hardware. The only thing they copied from last gen was the bad stuff, they've done none of the good.

Yes you are, or at least that's how it comes across.

In business, companies always get what they deserve. And that becomes even more true when a business has been around as long as Xbox have.
100% on all fronts.

Im moving on from it though. Feeling good :)

I don’t think history will be kind to the Series consoles.

All those videos you see on YouTube of top 10 exclusives (console exclusives) for retro machines, how will that work for Series in future?

Xbox One X gave the XBO generation a great power advantage, where is that for this generation? If Series X is supposed to be their “Pro” console then did they intend their man Series S console to just be a half-gen leap all along?

What I meant by mistakes is "tv, tv, tv", weak ass console, online DRM for physical games, 499 price, Kinect bundled that no one wanted at this point etc.

E3 2013 killed Xbox one and they were never able to recover.

Xbox series on the other hand was quite positive before launch. They of course fucked up after that with lack of games etc. But console was more or less on par with PS5 in power and played third party games very well (compared to One).

Xbox one gen killed Xbox, and they didn't do enough to change that with Series. Xbox is dead at this point.

You forgot the biggest fuck up that was the Series S and the fact that Series X was marketed to be more powerful but failed at delivering that.

Yep, Series S is a joke. Xbox SX was meant to kill PS5 in power before launch but didn't deliver.

Still, Series X power is enough and not really a problem in grand scheme of things. They fucked up many other things.

You're giving Sony too much credit. Arguably the weakest PS generation in terms of game releases did not do anything to kill the Xbox.

Xbox under Phil's guidance killed Xbox. Additionally, no one is claiming its going to be sunshine and roses. You're imagining a scenario that exist only in your head.

But less game releases is an industry wide phenomenon due to size and cost. It has nothing to do with PlayStation and this gen had them lock in more partner devs whereas PS4 they disbanded devs and never added any new ones.

Being industry wide, they only got worse along with every other platform, but Xbox declined even harder than everyone else. They declined 3 fold compared to industry average by not releasing hardware with an exclusive and having what they did release later not be appealing.

Its crazy to me how much PS has steamrolled Xbox this gen. I think.MS has so much against them they could and never will be successful in hardware.

They're a company that no one likes and those that do...well look at the photos and Jizz.

Ive always enjoyed the platform and for me personally, have seen the benefits from programs such as play anywhere and cross buy etc. They've pushed free cloud saves for years. Great (compared to the competition) refund policies but none of this cool stuff can cut through how fucking useless they are at the day to day running of the business.

I think they could have really made some cool changes to policies happen within console gaming if they could have only just figured the basics out. I'm not saying running business is easy, far from it. Im jist saying you gotta deliver on the core principles or you end up where they are now.

Money is not the answer to good business. Strong individuals with good ideas that they execute is what matters. And MS have failed at every step on that front.

Third party will save them and make them a monster in the publishing of software world but ultimately I think we will lose out.

PS will absolutely destroy the xbox now as you would have to know exactly what you are signing up for to buy an Xbox this gen.

I perosnally don't feel Sony deserve the sales they are receiving this gen and I think their fans are far too soft on them as a business. You’re definitely bitter. You’ve held on more than most people, and the “Xbox benefits” you listed that PS fans need to demand of Sony are pretty worthless to 99% of the population.

Hank down the street isn’t making a purchase decision based on crossbuy and cloud saves. He’s buying because the PS5 is the latest/greatest console that will allow him to play those God of War/Spiderman/Last of Us games everyone was talking about and to play Fortnite, FIFA, or Call of Duty with his buddies.

Those are mistakes for sure, but the things I've listed are greater mistakes. The Xbox One still sold 58 million units.

Not having any games worth buying an Xbox Series for and the Series S SKU not being a long term value are way worse mistakes.

Not sure how you can call Xbox Series a positive launch without any real launch titles of merit or anything on the horizon. In fact they haven't dropped a single major hit since they launched.

it's weird to look back at Xbox One in 2013, 2014, maybe even 2015 and find a decent list of exclusive games that you could not get nowhere else. And that was a time when the Xbox One was rightfully raked over the coals for its huge flaws. But it was still a much better option than the Xbox Series has been this whole generation.

It's interesting to dive into the psychology of it.

I think at the time people were still invested in keeping Xbox honest but through over a decade of failure they gave up hope on improvements and decided to shift to tearing Sony down rather than pushing Xbox to improve.

This has been truly a lost decade for Xbox with no real wins to speak of, meanwhile people are out there playing Astro Bot, Breath of the Wild, and Ghost of Tsushima among others.

There are people really pushing that consoles are dying simply because Xbox died.

I actually think we're in a golden age of gaming but you'd never think so based on the online discourse.

Compare 2004, 2014, and 2024 in gaming and my money is probably going to be on 2024.
