Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Launched to “Very Positive” reviews on Steam

Game Pass isn't on Steam.

That's like trying to use Steam numbers to judge Diablo IV or Overwatch, when most of those players are on Bnet.

The only thing using Steam numbers for a Game Pass or Bnet game does is fuel confirmation bias.
Steam is the default way for most PC gamers to acquire games, even with cheap or free alternatives like EGS or Game Pass. It's a viable statistic. D4 and Overwatch 2 are different because they were both released late on Steam. Lets see how D5 does released day 1 on Steam.

Edit: I’d also point out that Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 are underperforming on Steam partly because Blizzard’s fan loyalty has plummeted. Had they brought their games to Steam during their prime, they’d likely be topping the charts alongside today’s best-sellers.

Not this bullshit again.

Palworld, manor lords and stalker 2 all also launched on gamepass this year but yet still also managed to do very well on Steam. If Diablo 4 had launched day one on Steam it also would have done silly numbers.

What's different here and why?
I'll copy my answer from another topic...

1) Gamepass killed the sales of the game and this was expected from the very beginning, there is no point in buying this game on steam from a financial point of view. (And yes, in this case it played a huge role, it is a linear game for 12-15 hours, which 99% of players will complete once and will never play again, so there is no particular point in getting it from Steam, it is easier to get it from GamePass in order to complete it once and forget about it.)
2) Honestly, I don't know who the target audience of this game is. I'm 40+ and I don't care about Indiana Jones anymore (especially after the latest films), that's why I skip this game. If I want to remember the past, I'll just watch the films. I'm more than sure that if you poll teenagers aged 14-18 now, most won't even be able to say who this is.

So what caused this?

The modern audience? Game Pass? The old IP (dead thanks to the last movie by Woke Disney)? The gameplay?

Its a dumb idea to make a game based on a dying franchise. The recent movies were flops at the box office and its no surprise the game will flop in sales as well.

It's not a stealth game. That's BS FUD being spread by console warriors too stupid to realize their favorite plastic box will have the best version of the game in the Spring.

It is a stealth game, but it isn't just a stealth game. Stealth plays a huge part in the gameplay and that is reflected in the OT discussions.

It's safe to say this game already failed commercially.

If you look at the launch peaks of Wolfenstein games on Steam, they are all below 10k, even 5k. Even other very good Bethesda games like Prey, Deathloop, Dishonored 1/2 are at peaks of ~20k. Many might think these numbers are good, but they’re not—they clearly indicate a mediocre performance and represent a commercial failure.

There’s something about Bethesda’s single-player, first-person "corridor" games that just doesn’t resonate with the masses...

Just over 8000 peak players on Steam (it should go up a bit more...) is a disaster for an IP like Indiana Jones, the fact that it's on GP is no excuse, Stalker 2 also came out on GP and worked much better on Steam.
The IP isn't as popular as people think. Even Lego Indiana jones did worse than Lego Horizon. Indiana Jones is a relatively small IP nowadays.

The same people trying to redefine what they would previously call a "cinematic walking sim" game into "Adventure GOTY" is kind of funny though. The formula is pretty much the same in large sections of the game and it's a movie IP to boot.

the development of this game started way before the last Indiana Jones movie got into cinemas. This game was a bet on the new movie bringin the franchise back...and well, we know how that played out.

It's not required though. There's no forced stealth. You can run in fighting everyone if you want.

That's why I said it isn't just a stealth game, but there is nothing wrong with that characterization either. The primary mechanic here is obviously stealth. You can go guns blazing in many other games considered to be stealth as well.

Piracy will not make a dint.

The game won’t sell well at all because people (even on PC) that want to play it will just subscribe to Game Pass for a month if they aren’t a regular game pass subscriber.

We’ve seen time and time again that big releases don’t equate to subscriber growth for Game Pass. They have a user base of 25-30m and it remains consistent regardless.

The only platform where sales will come will be, you guessed it, PlayStation. Because those users don’t have an option to play the game for £10.

This is why, as much as people want to remain ignorant to the reality, Game Pass is an unsustainable model for anything outside of online focussed games (and even then quality, budgets and end price need to be spot on to work).
Its pretty obvious at this point that the GP needle wont move.. they are stupid with this half assed launches ... it should haf come to Ps5 day 1 since the target audience is deferent... whoever has access to GP will get there even if not for only a month and who wants to play only on Ps5 dont give a fuck about GP ...

Not many people who had access to both played the GP version of Palworld (other than to try it out), but bought the Steam version because the Steam version was several patches ahead of the GP version with more features. STALKER is a series that has a long history on Steam.

This is funny, because when palworld was doing silly numbers you were defending the gamepass version being shoddy:

Yea that's how I've been playing it and haven't had any issues. Oh no, there's no exit button on the main menu, I must run to Reddit and vomit hyperbole.

There is not a single example of a PC release that has done amazingly well on PC gamepass but not on Steam. Steam is where the PC market is, people would rather pay for their games (and pay more) to have them on Steam instead of having to use the POS xbox/windows store apps.

Anyways, enjoy your warring over Indy now. I'm done arguing over it. I'll enjoy you all gushing over it when the Pro version drops in a few months.

My god do you want to be any more stupid? Firstly I already have the game and will be playing tonight once I'm done with work:

pH1sVeR.jpeg

Secondly I don't have a pro, and until they fix PSSR I won't be purchasing one either. I actually put the funds I'd set aside for that towards rehousing my 4080 for a living room PC.

Keep projecting, and keep crying.

Fair enough. The game started development in 2021.

Anyways as per Kathleen Kennedy's playbook for success, they should have put a chick in it and made her gay :p

I wasn't hot on this game before launch. I saw somewhere last week that some of the team is comprised of people who worked on the Riddick game, so my hype went from a 2 to about a 5-6. It's greatly exceeded my expectations.

In saying that, I can see that this game isn't for everyone. Which is fine, as creative endeavors shouldn't be catering to the lowest common denominator. This game is all about taking your time, soaking up the environment, making calculated decisions on when to engage in fisticuffs.

I started it on my 4070 laptop, but minus the lower RTGI, the larger Ram config of the Series X seems like a good fit, and this is the type of game I want to play on a big screen. As I type this, I'm just remembering that I can use virtual desktop to play this on my Quest, with a movie theater sized display..... I gotta go

Lol no. Maybe in the first two levels when enemies don't have guns yet. Once they get guns you have no choice anymore, even on the easiest difficulty you die quickly and guns are near useless for you so you're forced to stealth.

After the success of Spider-man, MS must have asked ( by asked I mean begged) Disney for some of their IP. Disney finally gave them a bone (Indiana Jones).
If that is true, I imagine they are happy with the results. It's a faithful adaptation. Maybe they will give them something that is a little more relevant, to modern audiences, next time.

Lucasfilm Games =/= Marvel Games

Outside of the failed KOTOR Remake that will never be released because it was given to a fake "developer", Lucasfilm's stuff is always multi-platform.

They were going this way even in the Lucasarts days. They even ported the Rogue Squadron trilogy to Xbox and Wii but it was never released.

Purely as a publisher, without their diehard console fans roaming the Internet attempting to control the narrative surrounding their games/output, they would be nothing more than a low-rent EA/ubisoft in terms of how they would be perceived.

Thanks to how transparent and consumer friendly Steam is, everyone can see where their games sit overall. Also throwing all of their games on to Playstation/Nintendo systems isn't going to change anything unless they up their standards.

Who is going to play Forza Motorsport over GT7? Who is going to play Starfield over Tears of the Kingdom? Because that's the kind of on-platform competition they would be exposing themselves to if they were to go fully 3rd party. It's bad enough for them as it is on PC already but I believe it would be worse for them if they were to expand to other consoles in their current state.

And as we can see, the fandom are struggling to cope with this transition.

Absolute chaos.

I would imagine most people are playing this on Game Pass considering it's $70. I also think it'll have long legs because of its high quality. It's really nice to play a graphically impressive, AAA, cinematic game that feels so different than anything else out there right now.

Its great, loving my time with it so far. Its Butcherbay, but Indiana. I don't care for Indiana but loved Starbreeze/machine games' old adventure style games. (Riddick Butcherbay, The Darkness, Wolf reboot)

It's some good ol' classic first person game design from the 00's with great pacing and some Immersive Sim design. Can not recommend this one more.

Machinegames was started by 7 former Starbreeze devs including the founder.
Makes sense in hindsight, Riddick was one of my favorite OG Xbox games, I actually snagged the 360 sequel and remake late last year. I also really dug Wolfenstein 1 & 2. I don't play many FPS games, but I rolled credits on both of them.

Lol no. Maybe in the first two levels when enemies don't have guns yet. Once they get guns you have no choice anymore, even on the easiest difficulty you die quickly and guns are near useless for you so you're forced to stealth.
Get gud /s

Most likely a combination of all of that.

Modern audiences aren’t really into adventure games. They can be great and still not sell as well as even an average open world collect-a-thon. Game Pass will obviously affect sales, especially for a 15-20 hour one and done SP game. And the IP is definitely not a popular IP right now, thanks to the recent movie and the 30-40 years that have passed since the good movies.

You seem to be one of Freegunners who are struggling to acknowledge basic fundamentals like how Game Pass, Early Access and time/date can affect the number of users a game has on Steam 🤷‍♂️

I'm sure you'll be enjoying it in 6 months, while everyone else is raving about upcoming smash hit Avowed :messenger_sunglasses:

Game is amazing. Wolfenstein never had insane numbers on steam and everyone knows they're a success. People need to adjust their expectations. Xbox won a lot with this game.
