Only the USA and the Russians have the tech to put people into orbit. It's expensive and difficult.

NASA claims they don't even have the technology to do it anymore, and that they don't know how to solve the radiation problems that they already solved in '69. They claim they can't send people beyond low earth orbit due to radiation, but then conspiracy debunkers also claim that the Van Allen belts are no biggie, you just launch the rockets at the thinnest area of the belts (NASA documentation disproves this and they went right through the belts)

My point is that we CAN send people to the moon right now but we CAN'T send people to Mars right now. Going to the Moon could be practice for visiting a foreign rock while we work on the technology to ACTUALLY go to Mars.

And that would lead us back to the question of time, money and resources. I don't think any president or private investors are interested in the moon nowadays! But yeah, all that aside I guess the moon would make sense in at least some way!

It's not figuring it out from scratch. It's figuring out how to do it efficiently and optimally with current technology. The Space Shuttle had an 8088 chipset with 1MB RAM, needed to be rebuilt at enormous expense after each mission, and blew up twice.
