The real question is why do this interview right before the holidays? And that's because Phil has already waved the white flag. Also, because casuals don't read interviews like this.

We can probably expect some game announcements for PlayStation relatively soon.
I think they are reading the room and are going to unify Indiana release dates to avoid losing Ps5 sales from middling reviews,

Likely my favorite era of gaming as well but for me it wasn't anything to do with exclusive games on a certain set of hardware it was just killer games

Having a Series X and a nice gaming PC and a PS5 Pro I don't care where a great game comes to which platform I am playing it

I would love to see a truly great Halo come out and at least the MP part be on all platforms

That's just me though
I’m a firm believer that the old model of paying for niche games development that enriches the portfolio of your platform was way better than the profit driven first party of today. That’s where different systems and their exclusives take a part in enrich our medium. I’ve always defended this but it’s very obvious now that they are gone everywhere but in Nintendo how bland we have it today.

Also let’s talk how every time Phil is forced to admit that he must release games in PlayStation he looses 10 years of life:

Xbox President Sarah Bond had announced the store in May, with a planned release date of July. But staffers are still talking to mobile developers, including those responsible for Microsoft-owned Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile, to figure out a plan.

What a gong show. Wonder if she’s on the way out, given those PR pieces from a month or two back.

In my opinion alot of the problems we have with gaming today stem from this generation of gaming.
The best generation was the previous one. The original Xbox is one of my favourite consoles of all time, only beaten by PS2, and ps1 for me.
Xbox had an amazing software lineup

Damn, it really seems like he aged about 15 years just from how he looked at E3 2019

Still looking for acquisitions? Sega announced today? /s

I'd say no-one cares anymore with them announcing no red lines. But this is xbox. Can't tell their arse from their elbow and change plans all the time.

Phil knows his hardware sales has flatlined and its ironic that PS zealots celebrate games going multiplatform yet those PS guys buying those games and literally helping fund more Xbox hardware

I use my son as an example here often because he is way more of a real casual gamer than what I am and by that I mean he games often but he doesnt read forums and shit like that

When we were talking about future hardware he will always be an Xbox guy and I brought up games coming to Playstation and he literally said "who cares"

The vast majority of gamers don't care but then again we are on a forum and we here are not the majority of casuals

Huge root of their whole problem, not having those killer games

There's no real reason to buy an Xbox console anymore, since all games will eventually be multi platform, as evidenced by this interview, though.
If you’re prepared to wait a few months for them, and don’t have a large digital library you want to retain - I agree.

(Speaking about PS and not PC)

Really all that matters for Xbox gamers is the app and forward compatibility. If they perfect the app, it means that you can load up a Xbox-like interface on almost any device and have access to your full library carried over. At that point it doesn't really matter what hardware you have. They can put out one, or you can just go with some other type of PC or handheld.

Sounds like he's confirmed the handheld though, but it's a few years out. Sounds like he's predicting $1000 consoles also, which is an interesting throwaway comment at the end with possible tariffs incoming.

The Series is four years old. Of course the next hardware is “years away”. lol @ fluff bit. This place never disappoints when it comes to Papa Phil or Xbox.
Funny enough Phil doesn’t even said something new, just reiterated point that were made by him and Bond elsewhere.

That’s not true. They trade wins. The problem are not the machines, is the management.
100% true. The XSX is a great console and anyone claiming otherwise is probably trolling at this point. As you say, the issue is not the console, but the management. There's no real reason to buy an Xbox console anymore, since all games will eventually be multi platform, as evidenced by this interview, though.
If I may, it depend on what we are talking about. From a consumer POV, I can get that either console work and that someone can be very happy with a Series S or X. But from another lens, the PS5 is a lot cheaper to make while still trading blows with the Series X. If Sony was selling them with the 100 to 200$ loss that Microsoft admited a some point, we would have at least a 300€/$ PS5 today, or even better, and I hope that this idea shows how much Microsoft failed their strategy a some point. As for Spencer, I think that he needs a good game to go with the rumored handheld and hope that he will have it ready for when we will hopefully get to learn in detail about Microsoft next gen plans.

My goodness how far Xbox has fallen under Phil. All that money spent in buying studios and IP and they STILL couldn’t find a way to make their platform more compelling. Giving their games to the main competitor is such a bitch move and truly shows how weak and pathetic Xbox has become under Phil Spencer. Utterly pitiful and a disgrace.

What has happened to Phil? He looks so aged in the picture they've included in the Bloomberg article.

The last few years must have been quite stressful for him with all the ABK stuff, plus the MS Gaming reorganization... I hope he takes good care of his health.

Fpo8rJm.jpeg
Isn't that just a mega hangover from a week's worth of partying to celebrate as all your games library goes gold on Ps5/Pro ?

This was a time when the Xbox lineup was so distinctive. They had so many games that you could only play on Xbox.
As a gamer you just had to own both playstation and Xbox

Most people don’t give a shit. Most people buy PlayStation for CoD and Fortnite and 2k and Madden, not Demon Souls or Astro Bot etc. People care here because of console wars. It’s weird because I’d have figured hardcore gamers would own every console anyway.

He has been cheered on by the Xbox community along the way. I’d argue with some people it’s borderline subservient although I suspect there were other motives with some individuals.

It’s ok saying “good. No more platform exclusives, that’s archaic “

And

“When everyone plays we all win”

It leaves the obvious question, where are all the Nintendo and PlayStation games on the Xbox console?

Let’s be honest here, this has been about not being able to compete as a rival or stern competitor to the others, strategy after strategy and this is the result of it. He won’t quit his position and has a secure network of people around him for support especially in the media , so the chances of a team replacing this and making Xbox a better competitor as a console are limited.

It should never have got to this and those phoney, gaslighting fuckers pretending to big up their every move know it too.

This is an individual who wanted the likes of Crackdown to be in the same arena as the likes of Gears (look at the state of the third game)and thought that infamous Halo Infinite gameplay reveal was good enough.

It stinks .

So many sniper battles with my friends on Blood Gulch in Halo, that map alone made owning an Xbox worth it

Just not sure it would have taken away from my enjoyment if Playstation people were also playing it

I am fairly convinced the hardcore zealots here a portion of them don't even play games :)

If Sony was selling them with the 100 to 200$ loss
Sony tried this strategy with the OG "phat" PS3. It was closer to $200 per console sold, even with the $599 MSRP. Incidentally, at the time it was also among the cheapest, if not the cheapest, Blu-ray player around, so many bought the console and then bought few, if any, games. That damned near bankrupted the company at the time, so I doubt we'll see such experiments again.

They also had that $1 "loophole" that went on for years and paid members all over the internet evangelizing. Plus a lot of fuck you money and couch cushions filled with billions to throw around. And the ultimate was buying CoD, going to court and turning a win into a loss because they couldn't make it exclusive. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I think they already looked at the sales of Call of Duty and realized that there is no point in adhering to any red lines when the game on PS5 sells better than on Xbox, despite the fact that you own this studio and the game.
But did it perform better on Playstation? Blops6 paid Game Pass upgrade continues to be #1 on every Xbox store.

But that wasn't the point he was making. Do the maths the other way around, if Series consoles had to be sold at cost or profit like PS5, then PS5 would have atleast a £100-200 advantage over Series while offering a better pad, ssd and audio experience, and better or equal in most games to the XsX, showing that the Series are badly engineered compared to PS5 in that they just compete despite costing much more in real terms - and not just as a launch economies of scale issue - to the manufacturer.

What's the betting, they used a blue pen to write down which games were coming to Playstation, that's genuinely the sort of BS I expect to come from Microsoft now
Their fans actually thought that they would lose money so that they could buy a bunch of publishers and make all their games exclusive and also sell them cheap consoles and $1 subs forever. Like it was a hobby for them because of Microsoft money. They should have been thankful the brand has lasted because if it wasn't for their owner they would been shut down during last gen.

Phil isn't willing to commit to even keeping traditional Xbox pillar franchises (Halo, Gears, Forza) exclusive. Interesting. I half-expected him to draw some line in the sand - a vague one, at least - to help sustain the Xbox fanbase. Guess not.

Phil Spencer would commit to keeping those games exclusive. The people who are actually making the big decisions now do not care about exclusivity.

I hate the way that Xbox has become an almost redundant gaming platform for me personally, especially after the wonderful years of owning both the original Xbox (which was my favourite) and the Xbox 360. The original Xbox was an absolute joy with tons of exclusive and interesting games as Microsoft were basically finding their feet at that point, being new to the console market. They were far more experimental and interesting in my opinion.

If all new Xbox games are going to come to other platforms, including PS5, in the future then what is the point of owning an Xbox console? You might as well buy a PS5 and have access to both its exclusives and Xbox ones.

Yes, there is Game Pass but I'd argue that its worth is devalued by the fact that 95% of content on it is third-party stuff that is available on other platforms anyway and the fact that games get removed. I wouldn't be surprised if Game Pass also goes multi-platform at some point too.

At least with Sony, they are staggering their PC releases by 12-18 months after the PS5 version so there is still a reason to own their console even if the reality is that even the exclusives take longer and longer to arrive. For me, PS5 still feels like a game console, the Xbox just feels like a cheap PC in a box tied to a subscription service.

I know that sounds odd but the PS5 has the superb DualSense controller, it has PS VR2, PS Portal (though I am not a fan) and those exclusives that help define it as a gaming console. The Switch also feels like a games console because of its hybrid handheld/console nature and those Nintendo exclusives. What does the Xbox have?
