[Rolling Stone] Xbox CEO Says There Will ‘Definitely’ Be Future Consoles

During the conversation, Spencer alludes Well.....there it is. Been suggesting for a while that Microsoft is moving on to other "hardware" than consoles, but seems I got that wrong.

Despite a portion of GAF's persistence it was never in doubt in my mind. It never needed to be Ricky Bobby-d.

Kudos for posting about being wrong. Sincerely.

Good. Sony needs the competition.

Y'all celebrating and supporting the downfall of Xbox is some petty shit. You are ignorant if you think it won't effect the gaming industry in a negative way.
It's not that much competition when Xbox put its games on PlayStation too. Not like the old days anyway. With the "every screen is an Xbox" approach added to the multiplatform strategy for their acquired IP, Microsoft are not making a good case for anyone to buy their console. It'll have be an expensive box for the few die hards in my mind.

Cool..another box to be curbstombed by "competition"

As long as everyone is making money and providing a good service to their customers. Creating a healthy competitive environment to ensure we are the winners then it's the best possible outcome for us all.

The big question I have. Are the current Xbox users, still happy with Xbox? I'm an XSX owner and I'm certainly not. So will Xbox retain their existing users with new hardware - will they even migrate to another Xbox. And what are Xbox going to do differently to reverse the catastrophic drop off in hardware sales? And at a time where they are looking to push harder and faster into multi platform.

why are you not happy, if I may ask?

I own a series x and series s. I am very happy. no reason to switch to PS as primary console.

I know several people who are happy with their Xbox as they mainly play the usual COD and Fortnite and their sport title of choice and have no interest in the Sony exclusive games

I was happy and excited initially on launch. Especially with some of the BC program and the likes of Auto HDR. But it all fizzled out. And then just got worse and worse as time went on.

Release after release lacking quality. Halo Infinite was a disaster. A revamped UI home page with an enlargement of the 3 adverts and downgraded customisation. Occasional full screen adverts when starting up the console even though I'm on GPU. A toxic fanboi community fuelled by Xbox themselves, who would eat you alive, if ANY constructive critique expressed. A broken Quick Resume feature which causes me problems on most games that use online functionality. And no innovation at all with their next gen controller, compared to the competition. An atrociously handled brand. With mixed messages and what came across as a total disregard for those who were invested with them. Then we have the lies, the lies and more lies. Things like 30fps being an artistic choice and damage control nonsense. I found it insulting.

Microsoft failed in 2 generations in a row (Xbone, Series S/X).

If the next XBOX isn't as successful as the glorious XBOX 360, then they better not bother at all.

Sony needs some competition, otherwise expect the PS6 to cost $1000.

The whole notion of "Microsft's games" is bogus, when almost all of their big properties were pre-existing successes that they acquired.

This wouldn't be an issue if these products were climbing to previously unseen levels of success post-acquisition, but they aren't. Sales are trending downward, headcount is shrinking not growing, and the net result is steady continual decline in the Xbox brand as evidenced by their comparative market performance versus Sony & Nintendo.

Xbox was never competition at all the more i think about it.
The first Xbox compared to PS2 was...nothing really.

Xbox 360 vs PS3...it released cheaper (like...200 bucks cheaper), one year earlier (people always fail to mention this), easier to develop for, etc...and still was outsold in the end.

The other 2 was basically back to the start. MS wants to have some presence in the console market and they should but i really don't think Sony cares how much MS charges for their consoles. You could buy an Xbox for 300 dollars. Series S is constantly at 200 something and people are choosing a PS5 anyway.

It's a brand thing...

Thats good news at least, but they really need to innovate more in the console space, the Series X feels like a spec bumped One X rather than a new generation console. I feel Kinect controls could have brought more to the table for the casual market and made the console more appealing had they not abandoned it after a year, and it would have gave the console a more unique image rather than just being the 'other PlayStation'. Especially during the 2020 lockdown where everybody was stuck at home and concerned with the lack of exercise or stimulation.
Software is where Microsoft tends to do better, with features like SmartDelivery and Quick Resume. The 360 dashboard was also miles ahead of the PS3 in terms of features whilst using less memory for games. I'd like to see them innovate more with the dashboard, and integrate better with Windows or Surface PCs.

How are things going to change when it’s the same leadership/executives there and a bunch of social media minions unwilling to question them .

Most importantly the 360 also had some great games that you could only play there

But as to the original message yes there are 100% going to be future “consoles” from “Xbox”

Fair point.

They should bring back J Allard, pay him as much as he asks for and "Make Xbox Great Again".

Phil is clearly not fit for the job. 10 years of nothingburger (2014-2024).

Their minions give themselves away time and again, not just by the refusal to scrutinise but any positives when they do finally come around is elevated to more than it is because deep down these people know things haven’t been great consistently at all.

Their next offering has to be something genuinely great because there is no way I’m trusting them again after what has been going on since 360.

You would think after the Xbox One debacle they would have come out this gen with compelling stuff from the start but no, we got a Xbox One X 1.5, a weak launch line up that overly relied on Halo Infinite and the same “we are listening and learning “ narrative.

You don't think CoD is making more than ever?

I KNOW it isn't.

Look at the sales figures. Right now GP may be getting a bump, but unless they get strong retention that's hardly significant as subs generated by that have their value diluted by it being merely a part of GP's income/expense equation, not the totality of it. Also, bear in mind that any existing Xbox CoD player would assuredly be already paying for Online generally, so its not even like converting them to GPU yields the full price of the sub as additional spend.

Factor that against the reported drop in unit sales and no, I absolutely reject the idea that its elevating the franchise.

The whole notion here is that they are somehow making new CoD players, and there's no evidence for that. Especially considering Warzone's and COD: Mobile's existence. Its not expanded their addressable market whatsoever.
