PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99

Yeah, but right now they're selling this thing as being incapable of it. If they're planning on it, why not say that and make the device 10x more attractive?

I thought for sure the PS5 game streaming they have in beta now would be in preparation for this thing, because I have no idea why I'd ever want to stream a PS5 game to my PS5.

I don't think they want to let people WITHOUT a PS5 to be able to use this...

In that case, it's no longer an accessory, it becomes a stand-alone device.

As I said above Logitech Cloud is like €350 here, not €220 (without a DualSense built-in)

Yeah, seems that way. But why? Why do they not want it to work without a PS5?

For that price it should also support cloud streaming from PS Plus as well as remote play with PS5.

I don't hate it. I would use it to play games while sitting on the porch.

LCD display, thanks but no thanks. Guess I‘ll stick to my iPhone with backbone Controller than, the difference to a Dualsense is not worth 200$, especially if it comes with a butugly LCD display. I‘d rather just connect a Dualsense to my iPad.

The price is nice, less than expected. Hopefully they consider expanding the vision and at least include streaming apps tv, sports etc. Those posting puking pics are rediculous.

Because they want to sell PS5 consoles? :D

Yeah, but that's where I don't quite follow. AFAIK they don't make much (if any) money from selling consoles, they make their money from games, services (PS+) and accessories. Here is something that could make them money both from sales of the device itself (I'm sure this thing costs a lot less than $200 to make), accessories for it (headphones), and from subscription revenue if they allowed it to do cloud streaming. Why do they not want that? Why intentionally limit it to people who already own a PS5?

  • Doesn't work if it can't connect to local PS5 on WiFi at all
  • No Bluetooth (that I can see)
  • No PS+ Streaming
  • $200

That’s incorrect

Is it? The report says this thing can't do ANYTHING without a PS5, that it's just a dumb screen. If that's true, how could you even connect it to your PS5 over the internet? On WiFi it can just auto-detect any PS5 on the network.

Yes, you need a PS5 but you don’t need to be on the same network as the PlayStation 5. You can travel to the other side of the world and use it there. It will not scan your local network and pair with the first PlayStation it finds lol. Will most likely work like remote play does now, device gets paired to the system via PlayStation account.

I would pick one up if it had back buttons. That is the most glaring omission to me. Doesn't make sense for a premium product at this point in gaming.

Are u new to remote play? This is not just a screen, its a custom android tablet. You can turn it on without a PS5, you can even turn on ur PS5 using this device.

You leave ur PS5 in standby, as long both devices are conected to the internet, you can use it anywhere in the world. Problem will always be the internet speeds and imput lag.

Its a cool looking device but who the hell even asked for this? So this is essentially a paperweight without ps5 integration?

From what I've read it literally does nothing when not connected to a PS5. No UI of its own, no apps, nothing.

Yes, but it's not true you need to be on the same NETWORK of PS5

You can turn your PS5 on remotely from the other side of the world, literally, using this device

Everyone talking about the Portal, but the biggest news here is them shifting to planar magnetic drivers for audio hardware. This is a true leap in audio quality.

Plus the multi input wireless "link" tech, also compatible with regular bluetooth. Sick. I'm Definitely getting BOTH those Elites and the Explore earbuds do use with my phone. 200 bucks? I was just looking at banger planar buds from audeze but they're around 1k $... I'll wait.

They hit the price point everyone said they needed to hit so that's good. I'm still interested in it but probably need some good hands on reviews before I bite. Being able to play in bed or out on the patio would be nice.

TBH, I kinda like it. Being able to play my PS5 games from the bedroom on a decent screen is good enough for me.

But lack of BT is stupid. Seriously, how much did you save on that BT module? 30c per unit?

DOA, what's the point !? They could've released a killer portable console through streaming but instead they release this...
And I read thatyou can't play on your PS5 and on this console at the same Time which makes it even more useless.

Great value for both. The earbuds have everything you could ask for in features and include planar too. I wasn't expecting that at all but lossless and low latency and Bluetooth compatibility is pretty awesome.

It's not about money, they wanted to push their new proprietary "Playstation Link" wireless technology

Switch is having trouble with ports of PS3 games and you want a PS5 accessory to be able to play PS4 games NATIVELY???

That would kill the battery life and increase the price big time....

I mean the Logitech Cloud device is like €350 and it's just a streaming device for cloud apps.....

Switch is also Nintendo, and Nintendo are always known to cheap out on hardware just to get insane profit margins Day 1. They shouldn't be seen as a reasonable standard IMO.

Yes I think this would have more of a use-case if it could also play PS4 games natively, but that would also bring a higher MSRP. I understand that. However IMO it would be worth doing. They could also repurpose such a portable spec for high-end smartphone models and get lucrative deals pairing with carriers that way, or selling the high-end smartphone variants for big profit margins. If the build quality, premium finish, and specs are there, you'd get enough whales to buy such a thing, and spin-off models like ones with gold plating & trims, etc just for the collectability of it.

I still like it's a missed opportunity as-is. Sony just seem more content in maximizing the ARPU off the enthusiasts & whales in the install base versus covering a wider net of options simultaneously through the same devices and possibly expanding their customer base while doing so.

You can turn your PS5 on remotely from the other side of the world, literally***

provided it's on standby mode.*
provided neither power or internet get interrupted at your empty house while away on vacation.*
Subject to good quality hotel/venue wifi*

This device is just not a great idea for playing your PS5 during travels lol.

Thers no need for UI. Its running a PSAPP and android OS as seen by leaked footage before.

What it does is when you turn on the PS Portal it will wake up the PS5, and from there you are controlling your PS5. For remote play you dont need to be in same room, same house or same internet. As i mentioned, as long you leave your PS5 in standby, you can go travel and take this device, or any other device with remote play installed, and use your PS5 whatever you are in the world.

I was sure it would be 200-300. I was bracing for 300. 150 would have been doable but suprisingly cheap.

Even though I said this product is for people like me, I'm a total cheap ass so I'll wait to see if it sells and if not, I'll save myself a hundred bucks and get it on discount.

I'll stick with my phone + backbone controller for Remote play. No need to lunk around this thing just to do the same thing.

I could see myself playing Returnal from my bed or something, but this is streaming only.. I understand in order to play PS5 games w/o streaming we're talking a 500 bucks device, but why doesn't it use Cloud? And no BT renders my Pulse useless.

There is too many things not right with this device. Should tank and pick up for half the price. Another PS Vita TV incoming.

I don't think your Pulse headset works through BT. Doesn't it need USB dongle in order to work with PS5?

Wait, really? Mother fuckers...
It wouldn't be a rewarding experience anyway. Fucking back touch screen.

I'm telling everyone. Since like 2014-odd, a final "VITA 3.5" revision (after Vita, Vita non oled & VitaTV) with L2, R2, LS, RS. Would have absolutely cleaned up, in terms of digital PStore purchases and the then PSNow streaming, or Remote playing your home console portably. portably. Forget any bullshit about split library support, or prices of storage. The fucking thing wasn't fit for purpose from a hardware perspective.

These dickheads lost like a 10 year lay-up and are now eating paste as they even try to get back to where they were, but now they have to try it in the face of Switch, Deck, GPD Win, and others.

These days, such as Vita not remote playing PS5, or the time for split libraries well and truly past as shown by Switch and then Deck portability, we're not talking "VITA 3.5", but a "PS4 Portable". Instead, we get half-baked SHIT like PS Portal, that streaming/cooling fan for the phone etc.

You are correct. its glued into the back of my PS5. Kind of a weird decision, as it costs a slot.

Yeah, Xbox and Playstation consoles don't support bluetooth for audio devices at all for some reason. Nintendo Switch added the support like a year ago.
