I play Pokemon casually, meaning I've finished every game but I don't get too deep into the complexity of stats for true competitive play.

I still think RBY is a great place to start, as long as you have tolerance for dated games. The GBA remakes are more ideal, but the original Pokemon games are just as fun, accessible, and charming as they ever were.

I don't know if that's true. I feel like you need to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy them today if it's your first time playing them. The glitches that negatively affect gameplay that we never noticed as kids would be pretty obvious to an adult.

I have a little question... Are this game language compatible for trading or trades just work only for games with same language?

I'm about to buy Blue version (English language) but if this means that I can't trade with everyone because language ver complications I'll be very disappointed... :/

Most of the translations after Japanese were compatible, but I'm not sure if they even allow trading between them on the 3DS. There's some weirdness that can happen and I'm not sure if everything was exactly safe, so they may have blocked it.

I legitimately can't decide whether to buy a 2DS again or wait until we know what NX is. I would honestly only be buying it for the nostalgia and to play Pokemon games.

I think those glitches only get embellished because we know about them. I haven't actually met (in person) a single person who played those games either when they came out or in the past 10ish years that had a negative experience with the game.

I think it's easy to get lost in an echo-chamber and lose touch with a completely casual player's experience and what will matter to/impact them.

I still strongly think the only two things preventing you from enjoying the original Pokemon games right now are deep knowledge of current Pokemon stats/competitive play and an unwillingness to play dated games.

If you're the type of person that can play the original Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, or other NES/GB RPGs, you can play Pokemon R/B/Y and enjoy it.

The 2nd one is true... You can't evolve the Pikachu that Oak gave to you at the start of the adventure... (Plus, Raichu can't be encountered on that game). The only way to circumvent that is trade the Pikachu to R/B, evolve on that game via Thunderstone and tradeback the Raichu again to Yellow...

2. Technically true. You can trade Pikachu to another game and evolve it and I think a certain switching glitch will make it evolve too, but I wouldn't do that as that would probably make the Pikachu's Beach minigame unplayable.

I remember being so pissed when Team Rocket stole all my Pokemon. Luckily the Fearow I caught with my Master Ball knew Mirror Move, so it was never a real issue.

1. you can put Pikachu in the PC but it's recommended that you don't if you're trying to get Bulbasaur as that requires on Pikachu being happy and his happiness goes down if you box him.

2. Yep you can't evolve him in the game as he just flat out refuses the thunderstone, so you will have to trade him to another version to evolve him but again it's recommended that you don't do that till after you get Bulbasaur.

Yep, Pikachu cries if you put him in the PC and gets happy when you withdraw him.

He also makes a cry sound if you release him.

This is why I'm picking up one of these games. I have a desperate need for that kind of simple-but-not-too-simple retro console RPG on a modern handheld. I still play my Dragon Warrior cartridge from time to time.

Same stats as it always has, but it learns more moves (and quicker) in Yellow to make up for this.

Many years ago, I was given Pokemon Blue version for Christmas along with a GameBoy Color. I started with a Charmander and made my way through the game. It was an arduous journey and I enjoyed every minute. I finally reached Champion Lance but lost, however, I made a save right before I was to fight him and left for school. Little did I know, I would never finish the game for it was stolen from me (sister's fault, she lost it). I was then given Yellow version as a birthday present and I've been a part of every main Pokemon title since then. However, I never did finish Blue version. With this release, I will have a second chance at redeeming myself.

I love the original Red/Blue Prima guide. Although they had some weird little oddities - I think they used the Japanese version of the game (their maps say Shop instead of Mart on the PokeMart signs, Chansey is listed as Lucky, its Japanese name etc.). I think I had the guide before I had the game actually.

Maybe I'll get one on eBay just for nostalgia... Or use NickWhiz's guide on GameFAQs.

Doesn't matter. Just use the potion trick to get Pikachu's happiness to max right before you need Bulbasaur.

Pokémon Yellow for me, definitely. It was my second game (after Crystal), so I've got tons of great memories. I've still got the original cartridge with a working battery, but I'd prefer to always have it on me on my 3DS. Plus gotta show my support so we get GSC VC releases.

I think I'll get Red second, since I never played it or Blue, and then Blue last for a Nuzlocke run. I hear it's easier to do in Red, but I don't mind.

Yea this is only black and white for red and blue. Color for yellow.

I can't wait to grab Yellow but I really wished that Nintendo didn't half ass anything to do with online. PokeBank has so much potential but not being able to access it on a website or inside the games is annoying. Trying to make a full complete Pokedex run but they don't make it easy.

It's amazing in retrospect that a company made a consumer electronic the size of a brick with a green and black interface and it sold millions. Though by the time I got Pokemon I had the Game Boy Pocket so I have no green Pikachu nostalgia.

Does anyone have pics of the JPN boxed versions? I wanna see...

The real truth: you can start with any Pokemon game. Each one is designed as though they were somebody's first and have similar enough mechanics that your skills in one will transfer over to the others. If your goal is to experience as many different Pokemon species as possible and have a customizable trainer, X/Y is a good start. If you want the most recent game with a brighter pallet, more Mega Pokemon (there are some Mega Evolutions in ORAS that are incompatible with X/Y), and overall more improvements at the expense of a smaller pool of Pokemon to choose from, pick up ORAS. Both are great. I like ORAS more, especially because the soundtrack is way better, but both are a good choice.

I will say that R/B/Y are pretty archaic by now, but you might feel a cool sense of second-hand nostalgia by playing it at the same time as the other people here and then moving onto a newer game from there.

You really can't go wrong. Pick the one with the coolest cover to you. Give your Pokemon cool nicknames. Pick your favourites. That's really how to do it. Then, if you want more, consider checking out the competitive mechanics, which are surprisingly fun and full of depth.

I can't decide if I should get Red since it was the first game I played and I like the idea of playing the original game or Yellow because it's in colour, has the surfing Pikachu stuff and has all the starters and updated sprites. Damn.
