State of Play returns 9/24

A reminder to all my PlayStation brethren:

I think some are confusing communication with results, gone are the days of super hype events with megaton after megaton reveals, it's a different time but ultimately we're still getting the goods and that's all that really matters.

Keep expectations in check, know that all the good 1st party stuff is cooking but they will never show it all in one event and certainly not in an SoP.

The 2023 Showcase was heavily criticised and many outlets was echoing what we had been saying for ages after that event, they followed up with that SOP.
Hopefully this SOP will be the same after the PS5 Pro reveal.
But the September 2023 SoP was the one that followed, which was good, but not as special.
The January 2024 one was great mostly thanks to a good mix of recent first-party (Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade) and third-party titles. Death Stranding 2 had an amazing showing, but that was due to it being H1 2025 game.
The only odd thing there was the whole Physint announcement, but it's not enough for me to consider the entire State of Play to be 'reactionary'.

I really hope they took notes from the recent DF videos how to properly showcase the Pro but who am i kidding, too little time to correct by now.
They MUST show some amazing stuff if they want to open preorders 2 days later.
If they dont have 1st party stuff at the very least they have to end with a "Join us again on our December 30th celebration stream were we will show the future of Playstation" or something like that.

You know what would make me get a PS5 Pro, a disc drive (sold separately), a vertical stand (sold separately) and all the bullshit you Sony make?

ICO REMAKE BY BLUEFUCKINGPOINT.
Just image Ico in all its 4k 60fps glory and utilizing all the Dual Sense gimmicks....

Are you sure? I feel like I’ve read a bunch of rumors lately saying it is releasing H2 2025 and is going to be revealed very soon.
Pretty sure, they only wanted to announce the title and that development had begun. I thought it was weird because there was no need to announce anything related to RE at that point.

Yeah, no megatons tomorrow.
If they're gonna show some brand new first party by the top studios, it's gonna be in November-December Playstation Experience.
Hopefully we'll see some Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and stuff.

Sony basically seems to only reveal stuff they have immediately before release these days (though, Insomniac is an exception due to Marvel agreements). Astro/Concord were both revealed months before release.

I think this showcase will basically only reveal whatever content or third party partnerships they have for Spring 2025. I do not expect them to reveal any fall 2025 PS studios games that we are expecting.

That's just how they operate these days. The games are cooking but the reveal/hype cycle window is shortened.

So....this rumor jives with my prediction that we MAY see not only Death Stranding 2 (guaranteed) but also Wolverine in some capacity. Would be good to finally see Wolverine running on PS5 Pro that puts to shame all the early leaked footage.

Either that or Marvel will be announcing another partnership tease, which would be a bit disappointing in comparison.

Edit: Oh, it's Hip Hop Gamer....I don't think this guy has ever had a single correct rumor (unlike MLID which is right once in a blue moon....)

Death Stranding 2 being shown sounds weird to me when there is a whole presentation of it happening at TGS where they say the latest updates on the game will be shown.

I wouldn’t complain though and will watch any footage on it I can get.

Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting things to change. No need to get hyped over state of plays anymore. They have always been trash. Gaf has more sense than that.
wow, come on Slimy! You are just a hater

ok, here is my picks of what most likely will be shown, like 100%

Ghost Of Kyoto : Ichi's Revenge
Wild Arms Remake
White Knight Chronicles 3 : Kingdom of Nephilim
Jak 4
Uncharted 5
Judgement 3 (SEGA was saving it for this showcase)
sneak peak at The Last Of Us 3
Venom DLC
FFX remake
Motorstorm Remake
Killzone 2 remake
Horizon Zero Dawn 3 Darkest Before The Dawn

now really, is too much to ask? This is at least a more grounded prediction imho.

Probably just another cool trailer while the TGS show actually dives into the new gameplay features (which seems pretty ambitious and cool)

Yeah, I'm seeing people go crazy over this SoP announcement and they are just setting themselves up for disappointment. Best case we get some big third party stuff announced, something like RE9 or FFIX Remake.

Looking forward to another good backfire. Will be interesting if they even show Fairgame$ or Marathon after the monumental failure of Concord.

I feel like gt7 will be showcased as well. The new upgrades due to ps5pro plus a new update( with new track, cars and events).

Gt7 has missed two monthly updates in a row. Gr7 usually has monthly updates with 3 to 5 cars but whenever they miss a month or two, it is usually because they are preparing for a big update.

I'm gonna take a Longshot prediction of a major Sony franchise coming to psvr2...Either Socom resurrection or God of War and it doesent have to be vr only just playable in vr. Maybe naughty dog will amaze us with Jak and Daxter in vr hence no Astro vr

Only a Ghost of Tsushima sequel or GTA6 trailer would get my dopamine levels fluctuating. Not fussed about Death Stranding 2 regardless of it's technical feats.

Wolverine went from one of my most anticipated games, to least interesting when it was brought to my attention that it has been sodomized by a certain malignant consultancy.

I'd love to hear any news on Pragmata or Little Devil Inside. I hope there isn't a sea of remasters of old tripe on the menu.

Man I keep forgetting about Pragmata, lol. Insane to think that it's not vaporware.

I think Capcom said this year that it was not "Deep Down'd" but actually still in development?

That's actually a decent pick for potentially being at the show.

I'm not sure why people think that a state of play has to do one of these improbable things to be considered good:
  1. Lot's of CGI reveals of games that won't release for at least 5 years (a la Xbox)
  2. AAA after AAA game with no room for any shorter games
  3. All first party
  • Showing off a bunch of CGI "reveals" was a thing in the past that everyone was rightly critcised for, Sony learned not to do this and to only show gameplay when they were ready.
  • Not having shorter/indie games leads to showcases that do not cater to a wide audience
  • Having all first party means you are canabilising time from one studio with your other studios - you also need to keep your partners happy and give them time - not sure why this is not just common sense
So I expect a mix of things to be shown, because that way you're likely to show at least one game that someone is interested in. Full AAA showcases are all well and good for spectacle, but they really are catering to a fraction of the market. Last state of play, Astrobot was revealed - it's now high up (quite rightly) in the GOTY discussions for this year. It wasn't revealed in CGI in 2021. It should be blindingly obvious that Sony do not front-load marketing/reveals now like they used to and like Xbox still does.

I hope they leave DS2 for the TGS stage and use the time they would spend on that for other things - I loved DS but Kojima games always get disproportionate amounts of time at these shows.

There's been a number of good State of Plays.

I even think the one in May was good - it had a lot of content plus AstroBot was super exciting.

But you have to keep in mind that they are just State of Plays.....and a lot of SoP's can be pretty middling or underwhelming. A lot of people seem to expect them to be showcases and they aren't that.

Sony is a little better about telegraphing what we should expect at these state of plays so as to not get overly hyped, but this one seems to be a bit more vague for whatever reason.

Depending on one's expectations, sure.

From my POV, we also got 2024's GOTY, Astrobot, in one of such State of Plays.

yeah which is why it was a good State of Play....(obv not a showcase). I'm starting to think we'll never get a showcase again unless it's a proper next gen console reveal, sadly. Just not how Sony seems to operate.

Pretty much every big publisher nowadays. Nintendo also has small Directs now, instead of big showcases.

The industry has just shifted to different marketing strategies - whether we like it or not.

Yeah as a fan of course I don't like it, but I also don't think the lack of a big showcase means they have nothing either.

There's always been content, year after year, despite the more muted way of revealing it. Until that ceases to happen, it's not really a cause for concern.

True. And I think that's what a lot of people (here as well) miss; they focus too much on "style over substance."

Sony didn't have a single showcase this year. Yet they are releasing 9 PlayStation Studios console exclusives this year. Xbox did deliver a big showcase this year. And they only released Hellblade 2 in the first 9 months of the year.

Ideally, I'd like big showcases + game releases every year. But if I had to pick one, I'd ALWAYS, ALWAYS choose games releasing consistently over timely big showcases. At the end of the day, I play games, not showcases.
