Not without paying WB.

It's copyrighted.
Uhh no, it's worse. It's patented. Meaning, even if you were to come up with an original implementation of the concept (which is not that hard to do, the concept is very basic), you can't because (thank you US IP laws!) such mere concepts can be patented. Incidentally, this is why you couldn't have loading screen minigames in ages. Because patents.

(Yeah, the article is from 2015 - the patent was in effect for 17 years. Yay for innovation!)

Hate to say it, but when your last game didn't do the hottest (Shadow of War wasn't a bomb, but it didn't set the charts on fire) and you haven't shipped anything in most of 8 years, that's what'll happen.

Gaming is a high risk industry. I hope that the developer apparatus is being reminded of that with all these shutdowns and layoffs, because they've been running on cruise control collecting a paycheck for too long.

This sucks! I started replaying Shadow of War like 3 days ago, and it's still awesome. I was actually debating making an RTTP thread about it because it's a rare game that totally nails the Halo "30 seconds of fun" gameplay loop, and I've been having a blast with it.

Rip Monolith.

Someone really asked for a Wonder Woman game?

Not even a Superman game appeal to me to be honest.

Can't say I surprise after all those constat failures inside WB games.

Sad to see Monolith Productions getting shut down.
I haven't played any of their later games but AvP2 was pretty much my first experience with online multiplayer. Getting a clean headshot in multiplayer fps games is good but nothing really tops obliterating a marine by pouncing across the Compound map as a Xenomorph.

I just now realized they also made the F.E.A.R games. I never played those but in recent years I've thought about that IP from time to time wondering why those series just vanished. Feels like the IP had potential to get bigger and more influential than it ended up being, sorta.

Well, No sympathy for these guys. They havent made a game in like 8 years. Wonder Woman was in development for years and we saw nothing. If you cant even show any work you've done in almost a decade then you dont deserve to be in the industry.
Because the devs are responsible for what management forces them to work on? FFS this is a shitty way to look at things and a totally ignorant way to look at what people actually do at their jobs. Most people have very little say in what they do and have to do stupid shit mandated by morons. At best this is a failure of a few leads pitching shitty projects that failed, but at worst it is upper leadership demanding something like GaaS shit that they later reversed course on after so many high profile failures. But yeah, blame the little guy and wish them joblessness and all that that entails.

WB is kind of stupid here. They should be looking at ways to get some of these people to work on cranking out Harry Potter games. The last game was so successful and good they should be trying to get more of the RPGs out quickly and getting other genres out to capitalize on the success of Hogwarts Legacy and the hype around the new series.

I thought it did pretty well?
#1 best-selling game in the US in October 2017

Not really surprising, no publishers/business is going to fund a studio for 8 years?! without any output/revenue/profits. Rocksteady at least did release something, while it flopped, it still made something back and showed promise that they can at least make AAA games and release them.

Such a shame though, Monolith used to be OpenAI of video games two decades ago.

I wonder if this is the same person

To get behind the numbers and learn more about how sexism is affecting one of the world’s largest entertainment industries, I sat down with the lead researcher, Jennifer Allaway, a delightfully brash undergrad studying at Willamette University in Oregon. We started with inspiration.

Oh jesus fucking christ :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Looks like it lol

The "y'all" is always a dead giveaway.

Take that "delightfully brash" attitude and

go away gtfo GIF

what many of these 'studio shutting down' threads have in common (along with yesterday's molyneux thread): the repeated comment 'they were great'...

so much a part of the initial strength & success of these studios was pure & simple the team chemistry - a unique jamming together of talents & skills, & the ability to share a vision & see it through to completion in reality. it's sorta like sports fans remembering back to that golden period when their team was great. sadly, this's just the way with these things. we weren't built to stay young & enthusiastic & imaginative forever, either individually or as a team (which's even trickier. much trickier). which's why they say 'all good thing...'

'Where is Allaway headed? She plans to join the game industry after graduation, perhaps using her sociological superpowers to improve community management and game design. “A video game-oriented sociologist would be tasked with understanding who gamers are, why they play, how various factors (gender, race, socioeconomic background, etc.) affect how and why and what they play. They’re also acutely aware of the struggles each of these groups face and take them into consideration when it comes to game design. Socially aware designers are more likely to make deeper, more creative stories and game content, rather than relying on lazy tropes and stereotypes.”

Sad about Monolith as i love FEAR 1, and the first Middle Earth game Shadow of Mordor was good as well, but that was over 10 years ago now and you have to go back to before 2005 when they were at their most prolific games releases, they haven't done much in recent years, these studios are not being managed right by Warner Bros

Nemesis system is going to be locked down forever and never used again isn't it?

What a fucking waste.
I felt the same way about Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story. Guess we wait for a Indie dev to use their own Procedurally Generated NPC system I guess.

RIP Monolith. Hope all you guys land on your feet.

Another legendary studio destroyed by one of the dumbest, shittiest publishers in the current landscape of gaming.

But at least there's one silver lining...since it's almost that time WB...almost time for us to finally dance on your shitty grave for all the studios you've ruined with all these asinine and downright retarded business decisions you've made throughout these past 7 years.

Tick-tock tick-tock WB! Bankrupcy comes a knocking!

What will people like Jennifer Allaway do now? The market was clearly oversaturated with these turds and I would be surprised if they get another game industry job. An industry they helped ruin. OF?
