Where does Sony fit in todays landscape???

How is common sense delusional? I'm looking for value. One console/handheld offers several storefronts, the other does not. Price being equal, who would willingly limit their options?

The answer: fanboys

What you perceive to be "value" doesn't correlate with what the rest of the market deems to be "value". It's also cute that you think they will sell you a mid/high end PC at console prices.

You could have just built yourself a PC a decade ago and you'd have had access to Xbox's first party, gamepass and steam this whole time. You could have also bought any of the PC handhelds that have released over the last ~5 years and have access to exactly what you describe. So what have you been waiting for?

You're asking the wrong question - what you should be asking is where does Xbox transitioning to PC leave you.

Pretty much this. They have it all lay down to them.

If they decided to take advantage of that, well that's a different matter.
I mean Nintendo had it all laid down too and look what happened.

With threads like these you know Nintendo really screwed up with the direct.
When you think about it, even Xbox gets boosted by this awful reveal:

- Series S is now cheaper and potentially better than the Switch 2, has most of the "new" 3P ports at cheaper prices, not to mention gamepass.
- Their handheld plans now have a price vs perf target that isn't super hard to beat.

Since this is about handhelds, Playstation is in a good position.

While some people write it off, because 'PC handheld', Portal doesn't sufferfrom issues like this:

There is also very little reason why Portal wouldn't automatically be forward-compatible with PS6, as it's just a streaming device.

Then there is also cloud-streaming through PS+ Premium, which removes the need for a console, though at a cost. But that shouldn't be a big issue as GamePass is being used as a pro for PC handheld as well.
I think Portal is fine, but I honestly don't want them pursuing an actual handheld.

So, you made this bad faith thread specifically to crap on PlayStation console fans. Got it.
Your common sense isn't that common dude. Come down off that Switch 2 reveal. You're a little too high.

With Switch 2s reveal and MS's rumored PC steam handheld giving gamers access to Gamepass and Sony 1st through steam, where does this leave Sony?

Why buy PS when their games can be had on Steam along with Gamepass? Nintendo has always been fine on their own. What sets Sony apart from their competitors?

Will gamers flock to the 3 in 1 Xbox pc hybrid? 3 in1 meaning Gamepass, steam and through steam Sony.

I don't have the answer but it'll interesting to see how things unfold.
Sony will survive on brand loyalty due to psn ecosystem and friend groups.

Nintendo’s strength are their IPs and 10/10 commercials that appeal to a wider audience.

Msft is the wild card. If there is an assortment of oem and this thing is essentially windows 12 then they will encircle. The question is will they use valve as a reason to acquire aka valve owns pc market; we need ea/t2 and look we support everyone. Basically oem is their hardware and grabbing software allows gp growth and stacking pubs will allow them to eat on all storefronts.

I think my biggest reason to write-off the Portal is that the Steam Deck can literally stream from PS5 to it as well, and play other stuff for marginally more money than the Portal.

Sony needs to make their own hand-held at some point, so you can play games on the go, and stream at home.

It’s not a handheld.

Why do people keep saying this. It can’t play games natively.

It’s a streaming device.

I'm with you. That's kind of my point as well.

Sure, but that would still make Portal a cheaper alternative, as you already seem to own a Playstation.
Portal would 'only' cost €230 in your scenario and still have the benefits I mentioned as well.

That doesn't mean that it's the better option, but it makes it a solid alternative.

If Sony had any IP even half as successful as Mario Kart then they'd be doing the same or worse.

I know, but in a way it works like that, especially with cloud-streaming.

It has benefits over a dedicated handheld, even.
Sony needs to make their own hand-held at some point, so you can play games on the go, and stream at home.

Forgot to adress this, but I think a dedicated handheld from Sony would create similar issues as MS is running into with Series S and X.

I know i sound crazy but
  • with Nintendos prices + zero effort on the software front
  • Microsoft making themselves more or less obsolete as a hardware manufacturer / platform holder
  • GPU prices totally out of control
to me, right now, the best combo for convenience and price to performance is
PC Handheld + PS5

There is nothing remotely close to the deal the PS5 provides on the PC front.

Console games go on sale too.
Sure. You probably have to spend about an extra 30%.

But then you get Steam and an entire galaxy of games that are far better priced. AAA titles launch less, plus you get an effective 2 hour demo on every game.

Console gaming has a lot of benefits too, not least the fact that developers optimise around it, but the pricing sucks balls.

But enjoy the £80 games, I guess.

I'd see a place for Playstation if they still had games like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape and SSX, but they don't and Sega doesn't seem interested in those kinds of fun games either. Astrobot did show that there is an appetite still for them though.

Dunno about the market but am pretty happy going xbox route this gen.
There are so many fantastic games coming out these past few years that I don't see how you couldn't be happy. I can't keep up personally. There a more than few console exclusive games that I haven't even touch yet. Then you add in 3rd party it's crazy.

SSX is EA, also why would we want another nintendo. We want mature games too.

that’s honestly what I’ve been running

PS5 Pro + Steam Deck OLED are my primary

my Series X & Switch were barely touched last year (though in part because most of the games I still want to play on Switch run poorly so I’ve been waiting for the Switch 2)
