Where does Sony fit in todays landscape???

Sure. You probably have to spend about an extra 30%.

But then you get Steam and an entire galaxy of games that are far better priced. AAA titles launch less, plus you get an effective 2 hour demo on every game.

Console gaming has a lot of benefits too, not least the fact that developers optimise around it, but the pricing sucks balls.

But enjoy the £80 games, I guess.
Far better priced in what world? There are deep sales all the time on PSN that coincide with every other store. Not to mention actual used games.

PS5 is much cheaper than any remotely comparable PC and is guaranteed to run every game made for it. The hardware doesn't depreciate as much as used PC parts so can be sold at a decent price at the end of the gen. And you can buy games physically and sell after you're done.

Yeah. This thread is fucking stupid.

PlayStation will still continue to be the “defacto” console choice. A Xbox handheld won’t affect PlayStation.

A handheld from a dying brand won’t affect them just like pc handhelds including Steam Deck haven’t and just like the meteoric success of Switch didn’t. The Switch will be the best selling console of all time and Sony is still selling on par with PS4 despite losing most of an entire market.

Switch 2 and PS5/6 will exist alongside each other just as Switch existed alongside PS4/PS5.

I would personally kill myself if I were a Nintendo fan right now. $80 physical games, wut.

This is where I'm at right now bro. Ain't no way I'm surviving 80 dollar games (90€ where I'm living). It's over.

I think my biggest reason to write-off the Portal is that the Steam Deck can literally stream from PS5 to it as well, and play other stuff for marginally more money than the Portal.

Sony needs to make their own hand-held at some point, so you can play games on the go, and stream at home.
Marginally more? It’s double the price.

Or are we pulling the same used argument we use when all the PC YouTubers decide to compare their $500 pc full of used parts and not including any method of control to a brand new with warranty PS5 disc version despite the digital version being cheaper and despite used PS5s being much cheaper?

I’m not saying the Steam Deck isn’t much more usable then the Portal but to call a 100% increase in price marginal is a joke.

Plus if people are purely console gamers then the SD doesn’t really offer much more then a more convoluted way to stream to their PS5.

This whole "why buy a PS5 when you can just buy a PC" thing is really dumb. A lot of people still want a console, something they just plug into their TV and it just works. They don't want a PC.

The Switch is a completely different thing, a lot of people will have both a PS5/6 and a Switch 2, just like now.

This thread is full of childish console warring nonsense that is so boring to see over and over again.

It's all business

Nintendo already moved away from the console war starting with Wii back in 2006 and has seen its own successes that aren't dictated by the other two's success. We see this time and time again when people's platform of choice is "[platform] and Switch".
Microsoft's rumoured pivot to handheld/PC is a decision that would be made because they are not the market leader, so similar reasons to Nintendo. They are attempting to carve themselves a niche in the market where they can excel without such direct competition.

So the answer to your question is that they fit in exactly where they've fit in for the last decade, because they are doing just fine. Unless things change Sony aren't going to suddenly change course. Personally I don't see any major shifts any time soon.

PSN sales are nothing like as aggressive and frequent as Steam. I don’t know what to say; the decades deep catalogue on Steam that has 100s of games for single digit costs is the main benefit. Then there’s third party key stores that can be used for newer titles.

PC gaming has a legion of quirks and the price of entry is a valid point. But the game catalogue is far, far more accessible.

Plus the default 2 hour Steam demo is basically the best feature in gaming.

Sounds like Nintendo.

Doesn't sound like Nintendo, but doesn't sound like Sony either.
Sony needs to take some hits for it to change. There aren't enough games and the games are too expensive. Gamers need ro vote with their wallet.

The proposition isn't attractive.

I know, but in a way it works like that, especially with cloud-streaming.

It has benefits over a dedicated handheld, even.

Forgot to adress this, but I think a dedicated handheld from Sony would create similar issues as MS is running into with Series S and X.
That's why they should do it. The Series S, Switch 2, Steam Deck and budget PCs exist so multi-plat devs are already scaling their games down. Then couple that with Sony and multi-plats still releasing PS4 versions of games.

I just think a handheld that can play games on its own is going to keep better value than a device that only works when tethered to another.

Sounds a lot like "it's just a matter of adjusting a few sliders".

I think there is a distinction between the PC vs console price argument, when we're talking about the Portal because it only streams from another device you have to own. If I'm going to invest multiple hundred on another device just to have portability, I'd prefer to not be tethered to the house, and have other functionality.

My friend was looking at a Portal as well last year, and just ended up getting a refurbished Steam Deck on Steam for $280.

Throw in that smartphones w/ gamepad attachments or cheaper tablets can also stream PS5 games. I just think the Portal is too specific of a device, in a day when streaming games is easy as hell.

They already have graphics modes and a mid-gen refresh console. The days of complete single-sku are dead outside Nintendo.
Sony would be better off making PS+ Premium more appealing and focus on Portal + cloud-streaming if they want to go for a handheld.

But it's not my business to run, so...

As the market leader, since they have the majority of the console market share, are the ones that generate the biggest amount of revenue and sell more games for their console brand.

And not only that, they also have their biggest active userbase ever in a multiyear growth pattern, which combined to other KPIs that are also in a multiyear growth, and with their direct competitor console dying, everything leads to think Sony's leadership in the console market will continue growing.

Microsoft is having these issues because they are not the market leaders (or even close to it) and thus they can be "skipped" with no real downside if a dev can't do a good Series S version.

The other issue is the Series S was just gimped with no actual trade-off to make up for it.

Playstation is not skippable, and Nintendo has proved that you can make lower end hardware tiers without alienating devs with the Switch 1 Lite.

Playstation isn't skippable, but a PS handheld is a different matter.

Just look at Vita.

the answer is simple: Sony doesn't fit in today's landscape. just look how they fucked up everything with FromSoft

problem is you have a lot of idiots who recently invested $700 on a Sony console when they should have just put it towards a PC. because of this they're very unlikely to admit there is a problem.

they're just going to keep pretending they enjoy their poorly optimized GaaS slop. its no wonder their most popular recent title is a GaaS filled to the rim with micro transactions (Monster Hunter)

The Portal may be "too specific" but according to a quick google search it's estimated to have sold around 2M since release (12/14 so 1 year since release). Steam Deck was estimated to be at 3.7-4M at the end of the year which would be nearly 3 years since release (2/22-12/24) and with roughly 6M handheld gaming PCs that means the Portal has sold roughly half of what the Steam Deck has in 1/3 of the time.

Again, I'm not disagreeing that the SD is more useful. I actually just bought a refurbished 1TB OLED on Saturday and got it delivered yesterday. My original response was simply that 2x the price isn't marginal especially to a lot of people and I would be willing to bet that most Portal users are simply PS centric or PS only players.

As opposed to PC users not sucking off GaaS slop? Dude nearly every single top game on Steam is GaaS the majority of the time. Nearly every big PC title is GaaS.

Stop trying to act superior to people, and if you are going to at least make a sensible argument and not one pulled out of your fucking ass.

huh? I primarily retro game. my PC is old.

I'm not chasing the new titles / the best graphic though. people who paid money for a ps5 pro are literally seeking the "very best" graphic experience, per the many posts on this forum.

those people should NOT be locking in with Sony. also you surely aren't arguing that Sony consoles offer the same amount of gaming options as PC...?

Yeah, the overwhelming positive response on that presentation is baffling when this elephant sits comfortably in the damn living room.

It's not baffling, the price information wasn't included in the presentation. It will be sticker shock for the fair weather gamers and rage bait for the hardcore. Nintendo knows to separate the content and financial sides of the business. Let the creatives do their thing, and the businessmen will figure out how to sell it.

Didn't think it was possible for someone to outdo the OP, but here we are.

Monster hunter isn't a Sony game BTW.

edit also the post below me shows you're are literally pulling shit out if your ass dude
One of the games he listed is literally the game you called GaaS filled to the brim with micro transactions lol
Yes, there is no a single gaas in this list. This recent gaas trash filled with microtransactions(monster hunter) is absent too

How is something like Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals, and PUBG not a fucking GaaS?

I didn't say it is? I said Sony GAF loves it for some reason. I've pointed this out in the OT. you can browse the OT as well.

What are you waffling on about?

The most popular platform for the title has been PC, you know, the one you are saying people who game on Playstation should be migrating to.

You're punching air right now, but please don't let me stop you, let it all out.

huh?

how does it being most popular on PC mean it can't be popular on Playstation?

are you suggesting it isn't hugely popular on PS5? you are deeply out of touch if that is what you think

EDIT: holy crap I'm posting from an old ancient phone and having issues right now with typos/formatting so sorry about that

I mean Nintendo had it all laid down too and look what happened.

When you think about it, even Xbox gets boosted by this awful reveal:

- Series S is now cheaper and potentially better than the Switch 2, has most of the "new" 3P ports at cheaper prices, not to mention gamepass.
- Their handheld plans now have a price vs perf target that isn't super hard to beat.
I'm gonna prioritize the Steam+Gamepass portable over the Switch 2 for sure.

Then what was the fucking point of your post trying to say I'm pulling shit out of my ass by saying that PC players play just as much GaaS as console players? Or are you "just pretending to be retarded"?
I added a bit of context after because I thought it might confuse you, but yes we were both messing with you.

well I can only talk for myself, but I figured it was obvious from the list he was joking
