Phillip Wesley Spencer III Guarantees Safety of Xbox Digital Libraries Amid Future Console Concerns

1. Phillip Wesley Spencer III's Statement: Phillip Wesley Spencer III, head of Xbox, reassured fans that their digital libraries are safe amid growing concerns about the future of Xbox consoles.

2. Background of Concerns: Rumors about Microsoft potentially stepping away from hardware led to fears that fans might lose access to their digital games.

3. Microsoft's Stance: Phillip Wesley Spencer III emphasized the importance of maintaining access to purchased content and committed to supporting the Xbox ecosystem, including both hardware and digital libraries.

Conclusion
Phillip Wesley Spencer III's statement makes it clear that Microsoft will protect digital libraries and respect fans' investments in the future of Xbox. This aims to alleviate concerns about potential changes in Xbox's strategy.
"I want to show respect to the people who voice their concerns. To me, I get it, and I would never disrespect anybody who comes to me concerned," Spencer said. "I’ve got a library of games on Xbox consoles. I want to make sure I’ll continue to be able to play those games.

"Are we going to still do hardware? Are we going to still get to play the games the way we’ve always played? Am I going to have to rent all my games? Can I still buy games? All that. I get it, I get the questions. I think we’ve shown respect for people’s libraries over the generations with back-compat and Play Anywhere, and I want to continue to do that. You can buy every game that’s in Game Pass, we’re not trying to funnel everybody into one business model. Play the games the way you want to play them."
"We obviously have to run a good business, so we’ll have our pricing and everything that we do, but I want to make as many options as possible for the games that we have so they find more and more players," Spencer continued. "It’s why us embracing Windows and embracing cloud has allowed us to grow.

"One of our fastest growing regions right now is Asia, and it’s not because we’re selling more consoles in Asia, but through cloud and PC, we’re finding more users year over year than in any other place. The fastest kind of platform is Cloud. That’s the thing that’s growing the fastest year over year."

Ok, but I want them to explain how they’re going to be safe before they release their next console. I don’t feel confident that they will continue releasing consoles after the next generation. So, what would give me peace of mind is for them to provide access to my library on a PC in the future and to a much lesser extent it would be good for them to offer cloud access to our entire libraries as well.

He doesn't actually answer the questions he himself posed... That's a MAJOR tell. He doesn't want to be quoted in a clear cut lie.

The fact that he brings up Play Anywhere is a massive red flag for people with game libraries... It's entirely possible that they'll only keep these alive via the cloud and/or subscription.

Bottom line is Phil has been lying for years and for some reason people keep believing him even giving him unjustified awards.

If someone continues to buy into an xbox library particularly a physical one, they have no one to blame but themselves when they're unable to use it moving forward without an XSX. I wouldn't even trust them with my digital library.

Interesting he didn’t address if they were continuing hardware, and seems to be saying software will be safe without it. 🤔

Microsoft had previously ventured into music services with its Zune brand. The Zune Marketplace included 11 million tracks. The line of Zune players and Zune music store were somewhat unsuccessful, and the brand was largely discontinued at the beginning of the 2010s, although it continued to exist on different devices and the Zune Music Pass offered unlimited access to songs for US$9.99 per month.[6]

During its E3 2012 press conference, and in the wake of the upcoming release of Windows 8, Microsoft announced the relaunch of the service as Xbox Music. With the accompanying announcement of Xbox Video, this move was intended to position Xbox as the company's main entertainment brand. Both services launched on October 16, 2012.[7][8]

On July 6, 2015, Microsoft announced the re-branding of Xbox Music as Groove to tie in with the impending release of Windows 10. The new brand utilized the Microsoft-owned "Groove" trademark formerly used for the unrelated product Microsoft Office Groove (now OneDrive for Business). Joe Belfiore explained that the re-branding was intended to disassociate the service from the Xbox product line, making it more inclusive to non-Xbox platforms.[9][10][11]

On October 2, 2017, Microsoft announced that its subscription service, Groove Music Pass, and music purchases on Windows Store would be discontinued after December 31, 2017, leaving support for playing music stored locally and on OneDrive. At the same time, Microsoft began advertising the competing service Spotify, displaying a banner ad for the service within the Groove Music user interface,[12] and offering the ability to migrate music collections and playlists to Spotify. As a side effect of the discontinuation, on May 31, 2018, Microsoft additionally announced that the Groove Music apps for Android and iOS would also be discontinued and cease functioning on December 1, 2018, with users being redirected to Google Play Music and iTunes Match for similar cloud synchronization functionality (the OneDrive app still offered limited music playback functions within).[13][14]

I wonder if it's safe as he plans to make play anywhere also include PlayStation.

You'd just have to link your psn and Xbox accounts or something.

Yeah, that's what was about to address as well.

Sounds like his answer to the question about hardware, is that cloud is the future.

Edit:

So basically, he is going to triple-down on the failed XBO always-online/GP mentality.

It’s surejan.gif the thread, lol good luck believing your games will ever be safe digitally. You have no games, they are glorified rentals.

He respects them so much that he has been caught consistently lying to xbox fans about numerous topics over the years as well trying to gaslight them into believing that not having exclusives is a good thing lol. All this guy does is lie and sniff his own farts because he loves the smell of his own bullshit.

Anything that's not play anywhere will be cloud.

Book it.
Play anywhere is a fart in the wind, it's a fraction of a fraction. It would put too much pressure on streaming capacity to cover everything not play anywhere. The licensed "xbox" OEM handheld PCs seem to be the easiest get out of jail free on this front, simple emulation of everything pre-Series, with streaming to cover what would be financially impractical/impossible.

Folks buying physical xbox games this gen will be screwed.
A disc is always going to play in the console you bought it for. Hoping for anything more than that going forwards with the way media is consumed is all about hope and crossed fingers, not logic.
All 7 of them.
Fair estimate.

My Xbox library (both digital and physical) isn't very big (not gonna lie, pirated a lot of games during the 360 generation) and I wanted to expand it by purchasing both classics and new releases. After all the recent rumors and moves already made by MS I stopped buying new Xbox games. It's very hard to guess what happens next. I would assume you will still be able to download & play owned games if you have the old consoles. But what about the new hardware? Will it support all games from XONE & Series generations?

Driveclub works fine on PS5 as long as you've bought it in the first place. Its not gone if you own it.

PT was a demo of sorts, and the game was subsequently axed. Removing this demo kind of makes sense, the game proper doesn't exist.
For now.
Another example of the danger of digital is the removed songs from GTA.

So when they stop selling hardware I will be able to play my library in the cloud? I didn't buy the games to play compressed and laggy feeds.

Sounds like BC via cloud. No hybrid PC if true.

Some of the disk based games work from Xbox OG days (through updated downloads to be fair).

I have a decent amount of Xbox OG and Xbox 360 titles that work great on XSX in that manner with disk acting as DRM check. Hopefully MS still supports that down the road with XSX as new hardware 100% won’t have an optical disk drive.

Like with other consoles I have, will get a “backup” XSX down the road.

Eh, as longs as their xbones series keep working they're safe, explain to me how is MS going to transfer all of the gaming libraries to other platforms?

Is MS willing to pony up for millions in $ or through "arrangements" with publishers to repurchase these licenses in other systems or there is going to be a huge fucking * telling those who bought digital something in the likes of "tough luck kid, your library is safe, sure, BUT ONLY IF YOU SUBMIT YOUR SOUL TO THE MS STORE MUAHAHAH!" 😁

I guess we'll see. Continue to do that and there's really no issue. Can't say I feel very reassured from his hyper vague way of talking about it though.
