Fair enough papito. For me is very simple, if someone calls me psycho for not having the same ideologies they have, then I am out and I wont support they/them with my money
Nobody called you or anyone else a psycho. Hansen wrote "sickos.jpg" (instead of actually posting the image itself) - reference to a reaction image people post when they're on the outside looking in with perverse pleasure or schadenfreude at a given situation. I'm sure you're familiar with it.
Hansen saw himself as the sicko taking pleasure in Elon's ire at having pronoun choices in a fantasy game. He saw it as getting a rise out of someone with strong opposing views on the whole pronouns thing. The unfortunate irony for Hansen being that it's objectively Musk left taking the most pleasure out of the situation (and I suspect revelling in his own taste of sickos.jpg) when going on to tag Nadella in a further tweet putting Hansen and his colleagues under a microscope they would rather have avoided. Not to mention the grifter circus in full overdrive.
It was, unfortunately for him, a poetically fitting use of sickos by Hansen, as the fictional creator of the image itself always reacts to situations with entirely the wrong reasoning or motivation. If he is true to himself and his thinking, including pronouns should be a positive, inclusive thing that makes his game a better one (however you, I or anyone else personally feels about that decision)... But no, it's that fact that it triggered Elon Musk "
I wanted so badly to make him mad with my game" that's the perceived big win worth gloating over. That's kinda Stan Kelly af.
If we pretend that I was once interested, it’s not the original Grummz stuff that killed it. He’s an over dramatic rage machine. What actually made me wary of the game design choices is the dev’s reaction.
I get the impression that certain choices were made not with good game design in mind, but intentions separate to that. Proudly admitting that is concerning as a potential customer because it showcases a willingness to compromise or even jeopardise the product to make a point. If it seems like you’re doing it out of spite, customers might think you’re cutting off your nose to spite your face.
That's a theme I saw running through some of the less reactionary posts in the original thread.
Pronoun inclusion was not necessarily something that bothered some, including myself. If it goes on to offer alternate gameplay opportunities that justify it rather than just ticking a box because they feel they have to or to get a few bonus points with reviewers, then that would be meaningful and allow more people to role play the way they want to. If that's all there and optional for those that care - great, that's genuine inclusivity.
But Hansen's words and tone didn't leave me with any real confidence on that front. People say Veilguard lectures ham-fistedly, disrupts immersion by injecting anachronisms in an indoctrinating way as though the devs themselves are bungling their way through a rewiring of their own thinking and dragging the player along with them. That just sounds fucking messy and problematic., not authentic but forced and out of place. It's not hard to see why people might look to that and be wary of similar things woven into the narrative of this game, too. Time will tell.
I didn't even remember it before the drama. Now I have seen some screenshots and it looks interesting. I might try it on Game Pass.
Two similar quotes come to mind:
There’s only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
There's no such thing as bad publicity.
Hansen is putting these theories to the test. Either way, I'll add another observation: Games get a Pass on Game Pass.
