Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

12 right now.

It feels like the Xp gains took a sharp decline for me after level 10, it's taken me around the same time to get 2 levels over 10 as it did to get the first 10, or at least that's what it feels like. But then again, in zone 2 I'm doing far more exploration and have only done one of the story quests, I guess that's where the bulk of the XP comes from.
From what I gather, you don't get much XP in the open world. The main quest and side quests is how you gain a bunch of XP quickly. Which is annoying because I like exploring the world before doing quests

Played for 5 hours. Not a RPG fan (besides Mass Effect, Cyberpunk and Witcher 3) but the graphics and world design kept me going. The atmosphere, exploration and allround calm world is something I like.

However, the story doesn't grab me at all and there's no real incentive. I'm only level 3 and still have to do the first missions and wondering if I should continue since this game is big as F. I hate losing interest after 20+ hours and waste my time.

Have a feeling this is the kind of game that you forget about in a year

I'm running 4K, DLSS quality, high and I'm over 60. Think Mister Wolf Mister Wolf might be right

That was one of the things pointed out in the DF video. If you got an old ass CPU then it's getting strangled by this game. Not just this game, plenty of others(Stalker 2, Space Marine 2, etc). The era of the CPU not mattering is over.

Did they remove the skulls indicating how difficult each quest in relation to your current level from the quest list? Or maybe I'm just leveled up a bit now.

Easily the toughest fight in Dawnshore.

Yeah? Maybe I'll level up a bit first.....and then restrategize.

Hmm there might be a bug with stegc and the writ he gives you before you leave the dawnshore if you've done the assassin quest a certain way.
I saw him standing on the stairs to the bridge, but I decided to teleport to the city, when I came back he was gone; reloaded my save and talked to him first before fast traveling this time.

the second area is far more drab and gloomy, perfect for all the people that hate colours.

Day time is drab and gloomy but at night, that big ass purple watch-tower can be seen from pretty much any part of the map lol.

Also, if the first map felt like it took too long to get to night time, the second one feels like it takes too long for the sun to come out, it's mostly been at night for me.

At least both zones look very visually distinct from each other instead of being the same space separated by a load screen.

Some Zone 2 sights.

Side quests and bounties are really making this game shine for me. Having a blast. Just upgraded my armor and bow to fine quality using upgrades which is definitely a lot easier than buying new equipment. So thanks again for that tip, R Reizo Ryuu and adamsapple adamsapple .

Still on level 7 but feel like I'm hitting a lot of stuff right now. Leaning more into the ranger side of my character than mage. The bow is my jam.

Does anyone like the dodge or jump based on stick direction?

I think it is fine

Sounds like Patel wants to make more Avowed, possibly DLC expansions ala Outer Worlds.

Obsidian isn't saying what's next for the team, but Patel said she wants to keep directing games. The idea of something new is appealing, she said, but it seems more likely she'll be building on Avowed's foundation for expansions or sequels.

"Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it," she said.

How are you guys building character?

Suitable for 2 loadouts or just 1.

Am thinking they have given option for quickly switching them to go from ranged to melee. But will require a lot of skill points to build my character that can do bows as well as 2 handed hammer that I am liking.

Maining one, but keep a mage's book as my secondary for when fire or ice are needed to break through stuff.

The Emerald Stair is weird.. I came across the gate earlier on, figured it was where we were going next. Then later on, before I went, I came across a spot in the northwest part of Dawnshore and Kai talked about how it "used to be the gate to the Emerald Stair".. thinking why is it in the opposite side of the map? You leave out southeast and end up northwest - I guess the idea is you take the road that you can see there on the map, but just strange. Either way, off to new places..! But probably in the morning. Wrapped up everything I think in Dawnshore - all bounties, all side quests. Well, I never did meet the brothel people - is that quest not accessible if you help the young man first? Or did I just not find it somehow? A little confused on that one. Level 8 on hardest difficulty - but at the end there it was too easy to wrap things up. Like I missed some point there where it would have been perfect somehow, because when I tried some of them before they stomped me into the ground.

Ended up going mostly melee - axe and shield, but also have a couple wizard skills, but keep the grimoire on my second loadout as well. Have some ranger stuff - think it's kind of weird things like "parry" skill are in the ranger tree, but no big deal. I could definitely see playing through again at this rate with a magic/ranged exclusive build and making some different decisions.

not really, perception is the stat for ranged weapons, but that's mostly for getting more range out of them, since you can get crit from other sources like the ranger passive, the might stat increases damage across the board, dex makes you faster.

So even with lower perception, you'd still do good damage with ranged weapons.

I started with a gunmage build but been sporting dual pistol for a while now. To be seen if I put a grimoire back in my hand, probably. Using the charge attack on both of them drains stamina really fast but holy shit the burst damage if you score an headshot.

Decided to take on the Yellowbands and they made mince meat out of me. Time to restrategize.

Yea those little bastards were tough. Way too many enemies in such a small area. Managed to do it after a few tries on path of the damned.

19 hours in so far and still haven't left dawnshore, feels like a wrap with maybe 1-2 more hours. Can't wait to see the other areas.

Finally got those assholes, but I'm playing on normal difficulty. Even then, I kinda cheesed it. Some bug where the bears have a hard time running out the front gate. They just run in place. I was able to take them out pretty easily. Those bastards are really the tough ones, but yeah, the numbers are hard to overcome. Not ashamed of the cheese route at all, honestly. lol

I keep running out of lockpicks. Bought every last one from the vendors I've come across, but still come up short.

I also just recently hit level seven and also just recently upgraded some stuff to fine. Only 2 weapons tho. Can’t afford to upgrade the rest of my stuff to fine quite yet

Hit those sidequests man. The chests have pretty much everything you need.
I really need to. I have a huge backlog of them.

I did that Yellowbands one recently and got absolutely destroyed so decided to chill for a minute lol

I ended up doing more msq but I’m at the point where I think it wants me to go to a new zone but I have a lot left to do in Dawnshore so I need to slow down

The msq was starting to get really hard so I should have realized I needed to switch to side quests

It’s a good idea, a game with separate areas is perfect for expansions, and the core gameplay is really solid.

Also, this team got way too much crap for being woke and safe pre-release. This is so not made by some boring HR department, and they must’ve locked down that Matt Hansen guy in the basement, feels like there is some unhinged joke and comment in almost every conversation. Good stuff 👍

I'm around 19-ish hours and I've done all the side quests (I think) and all the bounties. So back on the main track. Side quests really helped me grind up some levels which helped immensely with the bounties. And fact of the matter is I think the side quests are really well thought out. There are a couple of fetch quests here and there, but the expedition one had an interesting story.

Really starting to think I'm going to go back and play the PoE games when I'm done with Evowed. Lots of lore that I've missed out on.

The art director made that whole thing into an even bigger mess. He should have left it alone. But you are right. The entire woke narrative is just bullshit. We've got people on GAF repeating bullshit that is spouted on youtube by the woke police and it is just fiction. Plenty of flaws here, but that ain't one of them.

Played POE 1 back in the day.

Gameplay didn’t clicked with me at all. Had none of the excitement of infinity engine games. Dropped it mid way.

But am hearing POE 2 is improved significantly. I intend to play it shortly. Hopefully wont get spoiled for it in Avowed.

I played a little of PoE 1 during the early access period. I don't mind the older style and such, but I'm having a hard time connecting the world of that game with Avowed as far as the characters and the world. Maybe that will become more obvious as I progress through that game.

POE 1 was a surprise hit for me back in the day. It made me read books again that's how much i've enjoyed the writing.

Yeah it was likely about politics, left versus right pre-presidential voting. He should’ve either left the studio or been kicked out after that. Gaming is global, gamers outside US don’t care about internal political turmoil tbh, we just want to play games and fantasy games are by definition supposed to be escapism.

But anyway they clearly held him back, default setting is to not show pronouns and so far I’ve seen nothing woke in the game, if anything there is constant bro humor with Kai being Kai all the time, they’ve had some fun making the conversations heh

I’m approaching 15 hours, still in area two with plenty of quests there and in area one.

My main complaint so far, where is the cool loot? Why aren’t there many cool unique weapons or armor? Almost every chest just holds upgrade mats and enchanting mats.

By now I should have found at least a few cool rifles or swords or wands but I haven’t found shit.

Its not a bad game, but not a particularly great one either. 7s are made for games like these.

Pros: the environments do often look very nice, combat is decent, the parkour aspect is pretty fun.

Cons: NPCs make the world feel lifeless and static, the DEI aspect goes far enough that it breaks immersion a lot, the endless loot everywhere feels like a leftover from its multiplayer beginnings, the writing is not really interesting or compelling.

I think its also a victim of bad timing - both in the sense of coming out at a point where games get sucked into the culture wars all the time, and also in the sense that they for some reason released it in a super stacked month where there are bigger and better options, and in particular another huge open world RPG that a lot of people were going to be deep into a playthrough of at the point this released.

The cool loot is in shops. I bough a big an exceptional sword in the second map and I kill enemies in the blink of an eye. The same goes for armors.

Save money, that's the key to find good loot

As he never really talks about it on socials, anyone knows what was Josh Sawyer's contribution to this? Just a consultant?

Anyway, did pretty much all I could do and went to the second zone. It's Yuge.

Well it’s just dawned on me what you guys mean when you say ‘mats’. 😂

There was me thinking ‘what are they talking about? I’ve never once found a small square of carpet you can wipe your feet on’.

I think he is talking about the skills in the various skill trees, stats aren't super importants and you can improve them with the loot, levelling is very slow in this game so for most of the game you can't really put skills for multiple loadouts unless you are happy with mid upgrades instead of actually going all in with a particular style.

There are skills that are useful for all classes so you spend point in those no matter the style (the one to consume less stamina when you dodge, the one that return you health after being hit, the one that erase some of the stamina malus from heavy armours etc.) but with the remaining points you can't really fully cover multiple playstyles for the majority of game, i reached the third map, did all the sidequest and bounties and killed everything on sight and i'm just level 15 or 16.

If i waste 6 skill points in the guns to have more damage and have the bullet time when i charge the shot, i can't really have another 6 points to waste on greatsword damage, critical hits damage etc.

So you always are gonna have one of the 2 loadouts that is stronger than the other until maybe end game where you have barely enough point to fully cover 2 playstyle (and i'm not even sure that's possible)

this game has literally nothing going for it that would make me, at least in theory, look past its flaws. Like I'm not into high fantasy, not into the tone and writing, not into PoE, not into Obsdidian and this type of rpg in general, and I'm somehow still playing and enjoying myself a lot. Still not sure if I'll stick around to beat it but it sure is a nice well put together and polished game.

Nah, you find unique loot even during exploration\sidequests\bounties, the problem is that most of the time it is just boring and not unique enough other than look.

10% more flame damage after a full combo IS NOT EXCITING.
