Put together all the totem pieces in Emerald Stairs. Some pretty great buffs. And are those gods you hear talking afterwards?

Do these buffs carry over into other areas, and does each area have a totem to build? Pretty cool aspect of the game.

The totem buffs carry over everywhere as long as you have the totem activated.

Each zone seems to have its own set of totem and pieces to find, once complete you can activate it. But you can only activate one at a time.

Damn I’m having a lot of fun. Love the combat, dig the abilities system and it’s fun having companions which differentiates it from many similar games.

Also just love the world, and the “level design” for lack of a better term. It’s fun looking for hidden chests and whatnot. Not sure how much of the map I’ve seen but it’s a lot more dense than something like Skyrim so while it not be as big as that game there seems to be a lot to do and explore.

I struggle caring about NPC design personally. I don’t really get it lol. It’s a game; I play mainly for the gameplay not to sit and stare at NPC faces and make sure their eyes and face are realistically animated.

To each their own though, not trying to hate on people that care about that stuff.

For those who've gotten past the Emerald Stairs portion of the game... question.

Do you think the Carnet's Cutlass weapon is worth letting Fior burn for?

Also, on a separate note, which weapon is better to choose from Forgemaster Dela
The Meteor Blade or Moonstrike?

I agree with the guy above, I don't know why there is so much focus on NPC details. Game is actually really fun, surprisingly so. I had some battle today where I was breaking up a fight between a vendor and crook, and then all of sudden it sprawled into this giant brawl with like 30+ people involved and some giant dude who showed up. I died, but it was actually pretty cool.

This game has some of the floatiest jumping I've ever seen. lol. A few times I'm thinking "no way I make that jump" and then I try and my guy flips up right at the moment I think he is falling to his doom.

I do find the game pretty gorgeous overall, the lighting really makes it standout. It's not some technical marvel at the finer detail level but it just looks good as you are playing.

Yeah, everything looks good in Lighting, effects etc.

That it has launched with little (to none really) of the jank we typically associate with these kinds of games is also a pleasant experience.

Look at all of these people having fun.

Fuck all of you.

I'm actually fine just breaking things down like you said. That works great. I use money for buying potions, lockpicks, etc.
yeah he mentioned that in a later segment that I didn't clip, but essentially that it can get pretty tight for people who are just going through the main stuff and not exploring, so they don't have much to break down; he mentioned they might give the main path a tiny bump in resources because of that.

I can only imagine, if you just do the main quests it seems like you would have basically nothing, lol.

Also, in the Emerald Stair area (not related to above):

The animancer girl you meet in town, is she going to be a party member? I thought she was for sure until she gave me some quest to go speak to three different people one of which is way the hell out west. I have to do all of these before she will join? If she even joins?

I have a big stack now - well, relatively. 8k, but I have only been buying lockpicks and nothing else. I ended up with 1 left after completing what felt like all of the first area. I am sure I missed a thing or two though, for example don't have the 6th piece of the totem.

I have been chugging more potions lately so I've been spending a little bit more on those now because eating food in the middle of battle doesn't really cut it, but it still does work and it's worth doing as long as you're not going to take immediate damage. I rather like this setup so that it mitigates the opportunity of pausing the battle real time and just eating a bunch of chicken legs. You can but you're not going to get a automatic effect from it you have to wait leaving you to use the potions which are hot keyed. I like this design.

Thanks. It's kind of interesting to me that it's locked behind significant exploration of the zone. I don't mind, but interesting. I started to do that and did the first two parts easily enough, but the third has you going quite far and I keep getting distracted on the way looking around.. I just don't feel like this is the kind of game I can zip to an objective across the map, I have to explore and jump around.

well I didn't want to get to spoilery but she joins near the end of the main quest the animancy method

Got to Emerald Stair at 22h mark and I still have plenty of fog in the first area but mostly for water parts, I guess there's still stuffs hidden but oh well, I decided to see further.

Very creepy area. I love animancers in PoE

Couple of screenshots of my playthrough tonight, Dawntreader quest part of it.

Hardware Lumen is just an absolute treat in this game

I love how 'alien' the landscape can look, the second zone has people talking about nature taking over and it feels like a fucked up version of nature has taken over most things.

The third area, from what I've played so far, seems like a traditional desert/mountain-ish region but I stopped playing just after entering it, will put in more time tomorrow.

Question for those who have played the game, etc.

So one thing I dont like about open world games is...its too open (for me) where there isnt really any set in stone place to go. I am interested in this game. Is the world go anywhere you like or is it zone by zone (which is what I prefer...explore one zone, clear it, move on to the next in a linear intended path). Also I tend to get bored with "too much" outside areas. Is there a lot of dungeons, castles, etc to explore or are they few and far in between?

In terms of open-ness it's nothing like a Skyrim, the world is divided into multiple zones. The zones aren't small though, think of the size of the starting Emerald Vale zone in Outer Worlds, if you've played it.

If not, think of it like a small chunk of Skyrim/Oblivion marked off as an enclosed space. There are castles, dungeons etc but not too many, the first zone in Avowed has maybe 2 or 3 cave/dungeons you can enter to explore. And some ruins etc you can explore off the beaten path for extra treasure/loot.

Other than that the quest structure is broadly similar. You have a main quest that's marked on your map, you can choose to ignore everything else and just focus on that, or you can pick up side quests from NPC's or boards marked with exclamation marks. Those will often take you to corners of the zone that you wouldn't need to visit at all if you're only following the central quest-line.

tl;dr there's 'outside areas' that you can explore, like you mentioned, but they're not as aplenty as an Elder Scrolls game. This is more condensed.

Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that - I am now more interested in the game! I am going to watch a few more videos, but I actually might be purchasing this game now. Thanks again mate!

Oh and I will say there's some obvious real world parallel themes that I'm kind of rolling my eyes at.

Birth control is against the law, but "live and let live man". Law and order being oppressive. Colonization bad, refugees good.

Some of it makes sense in the fantasy world, but it feels very heavy handed in how the developers want you to view these issues. Your party members are basically stand ins for the developers point of views.

But you can be an asshole colonizer here on the tyrant emperor's order carrying out his rule with an iron fist. So at least the devs don't hamstring you from being who you want to be.

you can also just say you don't care and not listen to any dialogue, fairly certain I had zero dialogue about birth control because I simply said I don't give a shit what's in the shipment.

The brothel quest has a couple lines about birth control/abortion you have to dig to get to, I doubt most people will even see it. Like you, I never saw it.

Made it to the third area. At first at least, it seems more vertical and platformy. I am enjoying the enemies here more than the mushrooms and Groots in the second area.

Finally got a unique gun, a pistol off a merchant in the first area.
