Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

Initial thoughts after 3 hours playing. I really like the combat and I see potential in doing fun stuff with it. Exploration and when world is OK. Story and dialogue seems a little lacking. Let's see how many hours it will make me play.
I like the dialogue and story situation the more I play, but at the beginning it does feel somewhat weak.

I originally chose to be a mage, then became an archer and have finally landed on using a gun. The combat is just so damn satisfying for some reason. Using tangled vines whilst shooting them in the head and evading others whilst reloading. It feels amazing to have overwhelming odds only to turn the tables with a few choice shots and skills. If there's ones bit I wouldn't mind skipping which would be the lengthy dream sequences. I've only had 2-3 so far and they seem like they crawl. Just let me get back to fighting! :messenger_beaming:

You guys sticking with first person or did you switch to third? I will admit I didn’t like this at first, but put 6 hours in last night and staring to click with me
Can't imagine playing in third person, but I specifically went into this wanting a first person RPG so that's my perspective on it. Any game that has a first person option I'm likely to play that way.

I’ve never been so tweakin addicted to such a supposedly mediocre game.
15.5 hours in and it’s the only game I want to play or think about.
Me too man, I have work days but then during the weekend I have activities with 3 kids and I’m like FML, wish I could just play this all day
Yeah, 22 hours now, this ”mid” game is taking over my life. It certainly has it’s fair share of issues but it’s fun and plays and controls so incredibly well. Been jumping on roofs searching for those bird nests in Shanty Town and the platforming is seriously better than any other first person game except maybe Metroid Prime. 👌

I’ve reached the final area. Upgrade costs become huge and finding red Adra is a pain in the ass. All things considered I’m not sure it’s worth upgrading versus buying - even at 50K it’s not too difficult to get the money.

Great game, I just wish you could do more in terms of parkour / traversal, like floating or double jumping.

Been going through the majority of the first area to gain some levels and upgrades and I’m having a ton of fun going through unexplored areas. The loot may be boring most of the time but the actual exploration is absolute top notch and map layout is superb, definitely one of true highlights of the game for me. And the controls in literally all scenarios from regular traversal to combat to platforming and even swimming is fantastic. Obsidian got so many things right here. I just wish they let me interact with things properly and I miss the life simulation going on in Bethesda’s games.

not sure if I encountered my first bug or if I'm just being a dummy

I'm getting the ! prompt that indicates Marius would like to talk to me at camp, but when I go to camp I just see the normal dialog options. I can't clear the exclamation mark. anyone run into this?

edit: eh per google I guess this clears once I hit second area

21 hours in at level 8 and still a TON to do in Dawnshore. haven't done a single bounty yet.

Is there 3 or 4 zones?

I'm so proud of you papito, you actually gave the game a legit try after the initial reservation

I have to be honest. I wouldn’t have played it if it weren’t for Game Pass. But I’m glad I did because it’s definitely worth playing. It has its flaws, but I feel like the developers have created something special here, I hope to see more improvements like for example being able to change the character appearance or dismiss your companions. Hopefully there is an expansion like The Outer Worlds had let's see

I don't understand the exploration stuff people are praising, are we so long gone from a decent game with one that people think this is good?
This is up there with the laziest exploration design I have ever encountered.

"Let's hide a chest... UNDER THE WATER!"
"Let's hide a chest... behind this breakable wall"
"Let's hide a chest... where it looks like someone could fall to their death"
"Let's hid....."

Fuck it, it's just the same bullshit ubisoft like 300 trillion chests of junk, iron, leather and gems EVERYWHERE.
I'm 10 hours in and have not found a unique or useable item I haven't already bought from a store or looted from a quest boss/mob.

Seriously is the bar so low that them jamming chests around every corner and hearing that twinkle noise is good?
Not only are modern devs so bad at it's design, the modern audience is there fit to praise it.

Good lord, what happened to less is more?
Also what else is there to explore other than finding chests?

Edit: Combat is.... passable, playing as a Wizard and have tried all the other weapon types so it's nice to be able to use anything I want.
Hits with melee don't feel like they connect though, like I'm whacking a hologram.

4, unless there is a fifth one but I doubt it considering the goal of the entire game is visible in area 4, and enemies are at max upgrade level.
Also about the scavenger skill.. from what i read i'm not sure if to get it, it seems that for every 4 flower you pick you get extra 1 so not huge, also the second level is not %25 off materials when upgrading gear, but when crafting materials? so not sure if it's worth it as we have total of 30 points? any other way of getting skill points, like skill books? doesn't seems so.
It's worth it for the final upgrades because they cost a lot, and you need low-level adra to craft high-level adra. One less required for each upgrade makes a big difference, you get a few max level adras from vendors but the rest is from quests / disenchanting / crafting.

If you play Ranger you don't need a lot of points anyway.

Good thinking, i haven't started upgrading yet so didn't seems like it's important, a shame you can't skip the first level of scavenger, there's so many skills i want, and only focusing on fighter and ranger, good that you can respec but this seems to cost more when you level up, might get it and be done with it.

Every time I think I’m getting a wee bit jaded, I do a main quest and all is good again. Not sure what problem folk have with the writing, seems pretty decent to me.

Although does anybody actually read the books/letters/messages fully? Who can be arsed with that?

With Avowed, Indy, Stalker 2 and COD, MS have been releasing some damn fine games on Gamepass recently. I almost feel guilty that I get to play them all from MS reward points. What a time to be a gamer!

Cant believe I let my assassin live. I’ve been a real hard bastard godlike up until now. Must be the drink.

It's not perfect. There are like a few things that they should improve in DLCs or a sequel (super static nature for example), but damn, I have just about zero need to play anything else and I say that as someone who usually plays 3-5 games back to back. It's hard to describe why but the game is pure crack.

Ok, so i am 12h in, done a bunch of side quests, started the second map (the gloomy one) and while this is a good game i am kind of both pleasantly surprised and disappointed (unfortunately its in the aspects that matter the most to me)

I love CRPGs and also like Pillars of Eternity setting quite a bit, so ive been trying to approach this like a typical CRPG, but the role playing options feel kind of very limited (still better than most games who label themselves as RPGs, but thats another topic). The dialogue doesnt offer exactly a lot of freedom, outside of Garrus and the Eothas godlike i havent found any characters that felt worth remembering, surprisingly ive liked many of the story beats so far. Choices feel really good and some consequences are already having some effect, yet the world is so static this game just feels closer to newer Call of Duties or action adventure games like Assassins Creed than to what ive expected from Obsidian.

Quite a big regression as far as role playing is concerned compared to their previous works, but the gameplay (combat/exploration) and the visuals are a big improvement and carrying this hard for me. I am having fun, but had they added just a few more systems for more interactions with the world then this would have been dramatically better.

I am going to change my approach and try to play this like an adventure game from now on instead of attempting to play it like a Bethesda game, hopefully the rest will be far more enjoyable if i play that way because the game feels huge and the world map feels intimidating. Lastly the upgrade tier gating system sucks really bad, i am dismantling most of the gear i find and buying all the materials from vendors and still underleveled which is very punishing, the balancing feels messed up/untested.
