Demon's Souls Remake is an artistic disaster

When Japan Studio got to play the near final version, they didnt get it and said it was crap. Literally.

From got no help from Sony with anything, they did it all themselves.
"Sony had NOTHING to do with Demon's Souls!!" is the most delicious cope of all time. You can physically taste the seething tears coming from whoever makes that kind of comment.

What time is it?
I liked the art more than the original.

MF most people didn't even know this game existed and never played it. In a decade we'll be talking about Kings field instead
God I wish I could somehow legitimately play Kings Field on my PS5. I played that game before most people knew it even existed. I still stand by it being one of the scariest games I played.

I never realized the remake was so woke. I don't have a PS5 and was never interested in the remake. I pre-ordered the original Demon's Souls, with the art book and audio cd. My brother-in-law borrowed it from me, and the loser pawned it. I don't think I'll ever forgive him. The atmosphere and doom of the original is unmatched. I remember playing the soundtrack in my car, being filled with dread and doom as I listened to the clanging death-symphony, so beautiful, jarring, and sublime. I really hate the new color scheme and art style, the lack of dread. Demon's got me through some of the darkest years of my life; it was therapeutic. The remake is the Temu version. Anyway, this video which I'm watching rn over the course of a few days, is one of the most important videos to come out this year IMO. That is all.

I spend hundreds of hours with DS on the PS3. I bought PAL and Asian versions of the game so I could get 3 platinum trophies for it. It was my favorite game of that generation for sure.

Also, the art was pretty rough even for the time. It felt like a budget game studio had punched WAY above their weight and made something I wouldn't have thought was possible for a small team on a limited budget. That was part of the charm - here was this niche RPG with a weird set of rules, it was punishing, trying to understand it was a challenge because they didn't explain things or make it obvious, yet it was way more interesting and addictive than big budget RPGs like FF13. There was a sense of cheering for the underdog.

As for the remake, it's been two generations and they wanted to show off the power of the PS5. I would not have been interested in just running the original art assets at a higher resolution and frame rate. The idea of doing a remake only made sense to me if they replaced all the art. I personally like the art in the remake and do not understand the bitching and complaining. I get that it's different, but at no time did I feel like I was playing a devalued experience.

This ain't it. I like the more moody and atmospheric style of the original, but the remake is still beautiful.
I was there in 2009. The “moody and atmospheric” was to trying to hide the usual awful job of “one generation behind and aficionado tier art” From is known for. They’ve been better in the art part lately but nothing to call home about.

The original Demon's Souls was my first FROM experience and made me fall in love with the game type.
The Bluepoint remastered was a fresh take on the original game, and, was a much appreciated bump up from what was possible in the PS3 gen.

Both games gave amazing artistic direction and an amazing OST, even though they are quite different.

Is it that hard to be content with both?

I haven't played either game. But i am watching the video because i'm interested in the topic.

The author is nit picking but also makes some good points. I can see why some people dislike it.

So far it feels to me like the remake has removed all the subtleties as they tried to make it like an epic fantasy blockbuster movie.

I would probably feel the same if i was a fan of the original.

I don't play the games that way. Looks like a retarded sped way to play.

You'll see the Wanderer's face no matter how you play. Bluepoint Games has some of the best technical chops in the industry when it comes to porting but they've often missed the mark artistically and mechanically with their efforts. That doesn't make those efforts bad and often those ports are needed since those games are trapped on dead systems, but things can get lost in translation.

It detracted nothing for me in my experience while playing, personally.

The thing people don't understand is: From games rely on enviromental storytelling, Demon's Souls Remake is eye candy on a vacuum, it has fuck all visual cohesiveness and coherence after all the changes they made because they thought it would look better without even understanding the purpose of the original art direction to begin with.

Actually, i just think most people have no idea what happened in these games, of course these details won't matter to them 🤣

That's fine, but it isn't hard to see why others might be bothered. This is especially true when they've worked on some of the most beloved games of all time so people are going to be hypercritical.

Yes, we've had a hundred of these threads with the same people saying the same things over and over and over.

It's time to let it go, it won't change a thing other than mental health.

It's gorgeous and one of the best remakes of all-time for one of the best games of all-time.

I knew once they were remaking it, people would say this no matter what it looked like.

I don't consider things like Resident Evil 2 and 3 as remakes. Those really are complete reimaginings and no longer the same game as the original. Those are fantastic games, too, especially 2. Demon's Souls, however, is the same game, but looks, feels and runs magnitudes better.

Game discussion on a gaming message board?

Maybe we'd be better off counting the male to female ratio of NPCs in the hottest new release.

I will never understand these people. You think this looks better

You people hide behind terms like "Art Direction" and "Art Style" while completely ignoring how Demon Souls looked like a PS2 game when it came out literally a month after KZ2 and same year as uncharted 2. Literally incomplete assets and textures. One of the ugliest games i had the displeasure of playing.

But yes, my ArTStYLE!!!! Get some help. Go touch grass. Go apologize to your parents for having failed them. Get your eyes checked. Then take a long sabbatical to Nepal and become a monk you have let down the entire human race.

Was it so hard to keep the same mood and direction while making the visuals better?

Did they have to add so many decorations or change the visual storytelling and lore, just to make everything look fancier?

Because it seems to me like they completely change the lore this way. Replacing a certain architecture style of a castle to a different one just because it looks fancier also changes the story.

Is it impossible for a castle to not be over-decorated or the most fancy building ever made?

Like i said, i haven't played the games but i do see how these things would matter for someone who cares about the atmosphere and lore and not just the graphics and polygon counts.

That's not even counting the OST changes and how they tried to make it feel more like a mainstream fantasy blockbuster.

I played it November of 2021 and was very impressed. Haven't replayed it though so I don't know.
Mostly referring to the ones who act like it's legitimately the best looking game on consoles. I don't see that at all, though I do think it looks good all the same. PS4 Elden Ring on PS5 looks better IMO and I wouldn't consider that the GOAT looking title currently available.

As someone who has zero emotional connection to original, it's nigh and day difference how much better art style the remake has.
If you remove the context of the story and lore sure. It's fancier, more beautiful and detailed.

But games are also allowed to be bleak, empty and depressing.

Nobody would. The remasters pushed the fog further and nobody complained.

But let me ask you this: Wouldn't you hate it if the Silent Hill remaster removed the fog?
The fog in Silent Hill is not the same as the fog in Turok. Turok fog is just N64 fog.

I think a lot of the “art” in the original Demon’s Souls is just because of technical limitations. So the remake “fixed” those limitations.

I still felt the world was bleak, empty, and depressing with the remake. Even more so in regards to the details of the world. It felt more real and lived in.
