Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Lol at all the people praising new Mario Kart graphics. I mean this is on GAF that usually tends to be a lot more cynical than other places. Seems like most people could care less if their game looks PS3 tier or CGI tier, hence why most publishers haven't been pushing graphics hard. Now with Switch 2 having massive third party support expect even more cross gen looking abominations. Couple this with poor writing that's currently the norm, endless sequels, copy pasta gameplay, little to no innovation and you have industry that's just not that exciting anymore.

I know a lot of people defend these companies by saying that games cost way more to make these days, but they conveniently ignore the fact that these companies are also making way more money than they ever did before.

Autumn in AC Shadows is genuinely something else, man. The game is already damn gorgeous, but fall hit soon after I finished a big story mission as Naoe, and I’ve just be laying here… Walking around, touring the world. It took me like 15 minutes just to leave my hideout because I was fawning over the graphics lmao. I still haven’t activated another mission yet, I’m content for now just appreciating all of the tech and visual presentation here.

Game’s beautiful as all hell.

Yep. It was recently revealed that Sony made $12 billion in profit in this gen's first 4 years, compared to just $4 billion in profit they had made in the first 4 years of last gen. And yet they lay off and shutdown studios like this is the great depression.

Nintendo has just gone too far. $70 was bad enough but $90? or $80 for remasters of zelda and mario? I mean thats just evil. It's comically evil. Sony was charging a $10 upgrade fee for their remasters and people lost their shit. Even though they actually released free 60 fps patches for GOW, HZD, Days Gone, TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima. These mother fuckers are charging $80 for 4k remasters.

That said, this is just Nintendo going full retard like Sony did with GaaS earlier this gen. It will blow up in their face just like it did in Sonys. I am not buying my kids $90 games. I was ready to order two maybe 3 nintendo switches but now im not even going to order one on principle, and im not alone. People buy A LOT of games for nintendo switch, and there is no way parents are going to be spending $90-100 with tax on these kiddie games.

The games will just be downported to this console, just like the series s and steam deck. They are going to release star wars outlaws and cyberpunk, games that already struggle to run on base consoles. They will be a disaster on the switch. If anything, this year has given me hope that devs still have that ambition and drive i had feared was long gone. At least western devs. I think Japan is toast.

P.S Shu just today said that he tried to get his studios budgets under control, but the drive to match or be better than the competition influenced Sony devs to aim higher and higher in terms of graphics and scope. So even at Sony which has been underwhelming this gen, there is that drive to be the best.

Just watched Switch 2 game trailers and it felt like someone was throwing bleach in my eyes. Was expecting PS4 tier graphics at worst and beyond that from Nintendo first party, instead was met with Switch 1.5 abomination. Switch 2 this isn't, more like Switch Pro or Switch+.
Incoming Shaki12345 Shaki12345 defence force in 3...2...1...

Ironically or funnily enough, AC Shadows reminds me of Ghost of Tsushima’s reveal gameplay slice, with all of the detail and RTGI shining through the leaves and everything else, but just… Better and real lol.

This world is insane. Let me stop fawning man.
Probably the game that’s most consistently “wowed” me this generation graphically, I don’t count HB2

LOL

Funny that you mention it because I just happen to finish TLOU2 on PS5 and I have to say that the baked lightning looks pretty awesome, especially interiors. It reminded me a lot of what I saw in Silent Hill 2 Remake using Lumen. It works really well for that game, since it doesn't have day and night cycle and environments are not particularly dynamic. I was very impressed to be honest and can't even imagine how much time, resources and effort Naughtly Dog put into baking all the lighting for that game. Their next game is presumably using RTGI so I'm expecting more ND goodness.
go through this post. You will see just how dated a lot of the areas look in terms of lighting. The outdoor areas in TLOU2 do still hold up, but interiors are all over the place. SH2 is far more consistent.

And this one

I dont know if the reason for the disparity in lighting between outdoor and indoor area is due to baked vs realtime lighting, but whatever the reason, there is a clear gulf and you have to wonder why they couldnt get it to look like the Uncharted 4 epilogue if simply baking in next gen lighting in textures was so easy.

I don't know man, loyalty from fans is too stupid to think Nintendo won't get away with it.

Switch 2 is obviously at least on PS4 level, otherwise current gen only games wouldn't be backported to it. Nintendo quote obviously chose not to push technology and rather focus on maximising cost. I know people say one shouldn't expect anything tech wise when it comes to Nintendo, but they always pushed their hardware to the max, even if that hardware wasn't state of the art. This obviously isn't the case with Switch 2.

Funny thing about Japan is that Switch 2 will cost $340 there, lol. Nintendo know they can rip off European and American markets, but Japanese ain't buying a handheld for $449.

Fans will be there day one. But switch is huge because of kids. Every kid i know has one. I dont know many parents who are going to be buying $90 games. switch's handheld only version was also a huge item during the early days of covid when i went hunting for one. unless they release a cheap $199 handheld only version of this thing in the future, i am not seeing it come even remotely close to $100 million.

This thing will sell out to the 20 million nintendo fanboys who will buy anything nintendo puts out. And some of the richer parents who dont realize games are $90. But their base is the kids, hence the focus on kiddie games all gen last gen. And parents might buy one $450 switch, but they wont buy one for each kid. and they definitely wont buy many $80-90 games.

nintendo can always pivot and drop the price like they did for the 3ds but at $90, they will struggle to sell more than 5 million of these mario kart copies. you can quote me in a few months.

Yeah I have a feeling it’s not gonna be as successful as the first switch. Expensive as fuck, doesn’t have Mario or Zelda to launch with and the graphics are barely improved

SH2 is insane looking, even the outside, although it helped a lot the fog (which for me it's the best use of fog I have ever seen) and having just one color palette, what bothered me was the hair, it has this light almost all of the time, it's so weird, it's like it isn't part of the scene and this is maxed out at 4K.

If I am buying one myself, it'll be for the improved performance in existing titles because in terms of next gen... They absolutely dropped the ball and it's a shame because the machine itself seems capable enough to run things beyond the PS4 and the Steam Deck (expected, because docked mode has quite more teraflops than either).

Where exactly are you getting the confidence to say it is obviously beyond the steam deck and ps4 hardware wise? The games on display didn't come close to launch games like Killzone shadowfall, they hesitated from announcing specs at a reveal not a great sign and we know they are still stuck on 8nm which for a handheld means limitations in terms of power to performance and thermal limits.

I was actually pretty confident that it would at least have ps4 compute level power with a batter CPU and dlss but seeing metroid 4, Mario kart its sure as hell not showing it. It seems like Nintendo skimped out on hardware again and basically put in just enough to allow ps4 level games to be ported even if settings are lower.

Thing is, I don't even care that much about the pricing and meh graphics.
Worst thing are the IMO dull launch games.
Nintendo is on full regress mode. They seem to just stuff more ADHD candy into their existing franchises and resell the same boring, rehashed shit.
Still, I hope they will surprise us with an innovative, intriguing, full-fledged new Super Mario game in the near future.

Just Cyberpunk alone shows where this device lands. It not only has Phantom Liberty but according to DF already is light years ahead of the PS4/One versions, running at 24-28 fps with potato visuals and crowd density up to this day. It's significantly more capable than a PS4, we already knew that. Nintendo simply dropped the ball with their own software, it's what it is.

I’m too lazy to pull up my own posts bit i literally called it months ago. Nintendo devs just don’t give a fuck about graphics fidelity. Expect gameplay innovation from them and nothing more. They either don’t have the talent nor the drive to push visuals.

It must be talent at this point, the fact that there still isn't antialiasing blows you away (despite other games using it). Japan is toast.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
Japan has been toast since Gamecube days. That was their last hurrah. Since then its been mobile looking trash. Kojima is the only one holding it down and keeping up with the rest of the world. Fucking shameful.

No better example of the fall off than Team Ninja. Went from best in the industry with Ninja Gaiden Black to whatever the fuck Rise of Ronin is. They used to push graphics and fidelity, AND make the best combat on earth.

Its been crazy to witness the falloff. Nintendo leading the charge.

But as pitiful as Japans graphical fall off has been, Chinas (and even South Korea tbh) rise is going to be just as monumental, for positive reasons. They are taking the baton out East. Holding it down -- First timer studios out theregoing toe to toe with the best in the west with a fraction of the budget.

It's funny that RE Engine was supposed to be our savior and was for at least one gen last gen. But even that engine in the hands of morons cant do miracles as we saw from last year's disappearing NPCs in Dragons dogma 2, and this year's Monster Hunter Wilds.

RE9 is supposedly being revealed at E3 but after RE4 removed the RTGI from Village and downgraded the visual fidelity, im not sure if RE9 will be a looker. Especially since its rumored to be open world like Dragons dogma and Wilds.

Fromsoft is inept at graphics programming. Team Ninja is graphically challenged. i dont think ive seen a game that looks worse than Rise of Ronin. Platinum has lost it. Only Kojima seems to have retained the talent, and Konami has figured out UE5. Silent Hill 5, Professional baseball Spirits and MGS Snake Eater Remake are all stunners.

But the rest of Japan is fucked. RIP. Thank god for Ubisoft.

There is one (unproven) japan studio at this point that I'm holding out some hope on, and it's Polyphony Digital. They pushed an 8k 30 FPS mode on Pro which is crazy, maybe there is still hope for Gran Turismo 8.

Really even after the disastrous GT7? Last gen graphics on a next gen $70 game. yes, even the PS4 version for $70.

I was shocked at how dated it looked. The trackside detail, the tracks themselves, the lighting. Everything was just so flat and boring. I was shocked at just how much better Forza looked and just how many people refused to see the difference. The lighting, trackside detail, volumetric effects, weather effects, night time, day time, everything looked better to me but for whatever reason, no one other than the most hardcore xbox fanboys saw them. I guess that makes me an xbot.

PD had 5 years to make GT7 and decided to make it last gen. It actually runs at native 4k 100 fps on the base PS5. They put zero effort into upgrading any visuals for the PS5. Maybe by 2027 they come up with something decent, but i highly doubt it. They want to chase native 4k visuals like every other sony studio.

It's their 8K mode recently that gives me some hope, that and the fact that they embraced raytracing as well (a rarity for Sony first party). I do think it's impressive that they hit 4k 100 fps considering that some of these japanese games are going below 1080p with PS4 visuals (seriously, what's going on with those pubs?). I might count them out in a year or two when they announce GT8.

Neither GT or Forza impressed me, I thought the 2020 trailer for Forza did look nice though, but guess what final game looked nothing like it or the 2022 trailer. For me Playground has surpassed turn 10 and Polyphony.

It's super weird how AC Shadows just continues to add new visual effects in the game as you explore more regions. The southern regions in the game have fog/volumetric effects during day time that were completely lacking from the opening regions of the game. And these are some of the most stunning volumetric effects ive seen to date. Way better than Avatar and Outlaws even. And unlike HFW, they dont feel like they are there to hide the draw distance. All of a sudden those same trees that looked cross gen in the first region, now have that photorealistic look of Wukong's trees.

Then there are some time of day lighting modes that I dont think i saw in previous areas. There is this gorgeous brownish lighting especially in indirectly lit caves and waterfalls that once again would look like UE3 infused brown garbage in other games, but here it just looks right.

Same goes for Night time. All of a sudden this thick fog rolls in on a lake at night. Snow and rain particles are individually lit by the moon light.

Very rare for me to see a game that looks better and better the more I explore. Typically (and i saw this recently with Avatar and Wukong), devs put in a lot of work in the opening few areas and phone in the last few acts of the game. Just a couple of weeks ago, i thought this looked roughly on par with HFW and now Im thinking its right up there with Avatar and Wukong.

Autumn despite the fancy wind physics of swirling fallen leaves, is my least favorite season. I really hate the way the red trees look from a distance. They dont look 2d but they kind of expose the lack of nanite support for foliage. At least from a distance like when you are at a viewpoint.

Like I said, i feel like I am alone on this, or have turned into an xbot because even John from DF gave the nod to GT7 and i couldnt really believe it. GT7's lighting feels so baked and ugly in comparison. The mid day especially hurts my eyes. I felt like deleting the demo from my tv after just one race but i decided to give it another shot but nope. Its simply last gen. Whereas forza uses some of its volumetric effects and bounce lighting to give it a softer more pleasing look.

To think that some people on gaf trash the graphic of this game, shake my pyramid head...
The TLOU2 comparisons have always been offensive to me. It's like people have forgotten either the games or how to judge lighting and asset quality. Both of which are leagues ahead of TLOU2. It's impossible to talk about it because it should be so obvious when simply looking at these games, but for some reason people have a blindspot when it comes to judging UE5 graphics or at least when comparing it Sony's admittedly best of last gen graphics.

GoT never looked technically impressive. it was the artstyle that make it look good. and Yotei will be similar I bet.

some of the textures in GoT were super low resolution for example. trees looked almost painted.
the only really impressive thing tech wise were the large interactive fields of grass and flowers

Third parties apparently were sent out devkits for the Switch 2 only 7 weeks ago... Yet, their rushed ports look far better than anything Nintendo cooked since 2022. Goddamn, this is lazy as fuck.
Just goes to show that porting games doesnt cost that much money. most of these consoles are using PC parts nowadays and iirc, cerny himself said that the ports took like a 6 weeks on the PS4 pro with just one person handling the port, and just a month on the PS5.

really puts into perspective nintendo charging $80 for the zelda remaster. And Sony refusing to update Bloodborne and DriveClub with 60 fps patches.

Yeah, I hope SP will deliver but I don't think Yotei will beat Shadows when it comes to graphics.

And look at this, 10x more GPU power... If this isn't the usual Nvidia bs, that's 4 TFLOPS when docked. Just no excuse left.

YouTube compression is killing the footage here, but outside of the ground coverage and RTGI in the leaves looking similar to AC Shadows, the latter kind of kills this game thus far. The wind, for instance, is a far cry from what is featured in Shadows, where a bought/large persistent gust actively has an effect on the landscape around you.

GoT’s sequel will be relying heavily on its art style, just like the first game.

Boggles the mind, to me from the very first start the game screamed high visual quality.

I don't usually gush from cutscenes for many reasons, but this one, where he rubs his palm, it's insane, visually and animation wise.
The animation work in SH2 cutscenes is easily amongst the best this gen imo, seriously underrated. Some really nice work on subtle details.

Yeah, i have learned not to trust nvidia after the 5070=4090 claims, but the fact that they have cyberpunk running on there with those visuals is pretty impressive and shows its around series s' 4 tflops in performance while docked. maybe more if it is running with any rt features enabled. If Ubisoft can get outlaws running on there, then AC shadows should run fine as well. Honestly, thanks to series s, i cant think of any game that wont run on this thing. Even GTA6 should run on the switch 2.

nintendo devs are just decades behind at this point. Donkey kong and mario kart simply look embarrassing to me. A real graphics dev with any shame wouldve resigned in shame.

go through this post.

Why is there a difference though?
Wouldn't tlou2 bake quality be... insanely better than any real time RTGI we can do now? you know... for static environments?
Did they not had enough time?

I need to replay both of these on the PRO. I only played them on ps4.
I did took some screenshots back on base ps5 though... just to keep the conversation going:
First one is tlou2, others are tlou2.
I know tlou1 remake can look like crap in some shaded interiors. but when it looks good, it looks great.... and the image quality beats Silent hill2 over the head... being like 90fps at that...

GoT never looked technically impressive. it was the artstyle that make it look good. and Yotei will be similar I bet.

some of the textures in GoT were super low resolution for example. trees looked almost painted.
the only really impressive thing tech wise were the large interactive fields of grass and flowers
I thought it did several things technically well. The grass for example. Especially with the wind and horse tracks. Yes, the lighting felt a bit dated at times thanks to the constant idiotic thunderstorms and grey clouds if you played stealthily as a ninja, but it was up there with the best of open world games when it did have a properly lit area.

Honestly, i expected more from the team that made infamous second son in the launch window of PS4. the night time lighting especially was ahead of its time. Nothing about GoY screams ahead of its time.

I never played this... I might just do that after shadows. I am afraid it will be underwhelming after shadows

Is this from the University dorm area in TLOU1? Honestly, the only good looking screenshot of the lot.

I played TLOU1 on PC maxed out. And a little bit on the Pro. played TLOU2 PS5 remaster both on the PS5 at native 4k and on the Pro using PSSR. Outdoors in some levels it can pass for a next gen game. Indoors is another story. I do not know why the interiors dont pass the eye test and outdoor areas do. I had figured it was due to the lack of electricity and ND having to rely on indirect lighting from peaking in from outside, but if baking takes day and is literally using offline rendering then why doesnt it look as good as the same time of day/grey skies lighting interiors properly in SH2.

it's a great game. story is way better than shadows, and combat has its own twist thanks to the three different stances. you will have fun with the gameplay even if the graphics dont hold up all that well.

play on PC on your 3080. They vastly improved the foliage draw distance. The PS5 remaster does not do this and its a big knock against the visuals. Trust me you dont want the game looking like this.
