Great games ruined by forced play of side character

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Wrong.

Metal Gear Solid.

Solid Snake is the main character. We were given a side character in MGS2 which was a massive disappointment after playing the Demo/Opening.
I get why people were disappointed. They set the stage with Snake at the beginning, and then shortly after they ask us to accept a new protagonist. But to me it worked out. I ended up enjoying it even more than I would have if Snake were the main character. Can't explain it, it just came together.

Its hilarious that after 24 years, people still don't get the point of the MGS2 Snake/Raiden swap.

Anyway, been playing FF7 Rebirth on PC and i still haven't changed my mind about that Cait Shit section in Shinra Manor. Fucking terrible section of an otherwise great game.
I dont think it's that people don't get it. I think its that most people think it was a terrible choice

I hate Nero in Devil May Cry. He is a douche and playing his basic bitch ass is a waste of time when everyone just wants to style with Dante and Vergil.

He was pretty cool in DMC4. Hes lame in DMC5, but Vergils emo alter ego was so much worse there, to the point where i wouldnt even call it a great game purely because of it.

DMC5 I think is a bad example. Dante, V, Vergil, & Nero all play very differently and the game is very well balanced for their styles and strength/weaknesses.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Indeed it did.

Still a massive difference from 96. The game was a huge disappointment after MGS1. Thank Raiden for that. Raiden was such a great move he never returned as a playable character in the main series.

Rising is canon so .. he kinda did.

And before you say "But it doesn't have Solid in the title", Code: Veronica also doesn't have a number in the title but it is a canon Resident Evil entry too.

I hated Atreus in GoWR. It was so boring riding on the back of a beast and listening to his conversation with that girl. I guess hate is a strong word. I wanted to skip his section entirely. I wouldn’t ever replay the game because of his parts. Put that in a book or something.

It didn’t. Who cares if it was canon. What else would it be?

It is not the main series. Raiden became a side show and deservedly so.

I can't think of a game where a section like that lasted long enough to ruin the game. I think spider man was like a half hour total of mj and miles.

DMCV was just a few parts with V. Damn what where they trying to do with that character, though? So weird.

I feel like there is something on the tip of my tongue, though... something I played that really...

Sonic Adventure 2!!!!!!

Sure, you are entitled to your opinions, but MGS2 is an incredibly well received game both critically and commercially, so Raiden's inclusion didn't really do much to deter the masses. 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. That was the point of the thread.

Great games ruined by forced play of side characters. We were forced to play side character Raiden. Still a great game.

It didn’t deter cause many played the demo and were fooled into thinking Solid Snake is the playable character. No one expected a character switch.

Heck Konami made millions off selling the demo with Zone of the Enders. No one gave a shit about that game. They bought it for the demo.

This is just my opinion. We all have one. Respect.

Wait. So hou think 2,061 users are the "majority of gamers?"
aw shit, yeah i'm sorry, I should get reviews from other sites and general consensus to truly unveil just how much people hated MGS2

Its insane the critical reception this game got. Like holy shit. Kojima better not ever repeat such a disastrous mistake again. Imagine having a 4.7 out of 5 star rating on your game, must be pitiful to know THAT many gamers hated your game.

As much as I'm enjoying your meltdown, I think there are a lot more gamers out there. That's just not the majority.

Yeah that's why MGS2 is one of the most despised and hated video games of all time

Raiden was so bad that the majority of gamers gave the game an 8.9. Kojima really fucked up there.
This is an incredibly bad way to prove your point. Looking at the written reviews the oldest is from 2010, the reality is that the discussions we had about Raiden and MGS2 back then were just as "eventful" as TLOU2 discussions today. People hated Raiden and a lot of people hated MGS2 because of him.

The hate was so bad that it was brought up in reviews for MGS2 Substance at the time such as this
Also, most all Metal Gear Solid 2 players like to point out that they just hate Raiden.

That view obviously changed over the past 2 decades, but it was a known fact that he split the fanbase, so I don't know why you're trying so hard to rewrite history.

I dunno man, it's not like I posted the platforms where gamers literally go to play games and talk about them, or anything.
Or like, some big video sharing program 1/8th of the entire human population (8 billion people) go to in order to share their thoughts on many different subjects including video games.
Or a literal internet encyclopedia that records many things including the cultural impact and legacy of media which includes video games.

If it makes any difference, I didn't ready any of it.

I'm very surprised nobody has said Halo 2 and the Arbiter yet. Yeah people look back on it now as being cool and "deep", but at the time that abrupt switch up was jarring asf and completely deflating, for the players who just wanted to carry on kicking ass as the MC in his big first sequel. I never really got over it tbh.

Everyone talking about how Raiden ruined MGS2, while for me the annoying side thing in MGS 2 was the codec calls. They're the reason I never finished the game, it drags on for so long, you play 5 minutes and you're constantly stopped by annoying codec calls about stupid things, all the time.
I don't care about what day it is, let me play the game. Shit felt worse than gettings pop up ads.

Although MGS3 as whole may be a better acomplishment, i think MGS2 is Kojima's magnum opus.
The most interesting story in the MGS series, it didn't bother me to play with Raiden.

As for DMC, Nero is great in 4. In 5, Dante all the way and i don't like V at all.

I wouldn't say Bayonetta 2 and 3 were totally ruined, Jeanne was always cool, but i can't stand Loki and Viola.

Dmc5 comes to mind. The summon guy so bad I can't even remember his name. Fortunately it wasn't overkill.

Now I'm currently playing god of war Ragnarok and oh boy.
Not only did they take the worse thing from the first game the annoying brat but now forced you to play as him.
The first section wasn't overly long.

But the second time, I kept thinking when's it going to end and it's 3 hours long. What were they smoking? This game went from great to nearly awful for me. I have no desire to play as this whiny little brat who's boring and just not fun to play as.
Looking at his skill tree I suspect I will have to play as him two more times.

Devs never learn.
I love the summon dude and I say this as a fan of DMC since dmc1 on PS2. I'd say spiderman 2018 sucks ass because of the side character missions.

Atreus parts were atrocious. I wouldn't have minded them as a narrative instrument, but they just lasted way too long. As a God of War fan from the very beginning, I play these games to control Kratos, not his teenager puberty tantrum offspring.

(In the end I still liked, but not loved Ragnarok, just to be clear)
