Great games ruined by forced play of side character

This was annoying as hell. Although Spider-Man and especially Spider-Man 2 beat it with super MJ, lol.

I wonder who they are going to shove into Wolverine? Got to be a regular woman (preferably of color and LGBT) who will save Logan 😉.
We already know from the leaks,

Its Jean Grey, there are snippets of playable sections of her fighting enemies soldiers using her TK powers, Half-life 2 style

Ahh, of course, sigh…. Oh wait, is that “uggy” version people have been posting about?

Man, this is going to be so disappointing.

AC: Shadows.

AC: Shadows

Who are the side characters in AC:Shadows?
Naoe and Yasuke or the modern age character?

We havent even seen the modern age character yet and you arent forced to play Yasuke or Naoe.
You can swap at will after the prologue.

Yasuke is the side character, Naoe is the classic AC character with parkour and stealth skills.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is top of the list for me. You play most of the game with a side character.

Getting excited after playing the demo/opening as Solid Snake then handed over to Raiden.
Oh boy, if you only knew how wrong you were, Solid Snake is definitely the side character in that game... Considering his gameplay is 1 hour and Raiden is what? 6 to 8? The story wouldn't work and there's nothing Snake can do that Raiden can't do better lol.

Wrong.

Metal Gear Solid.

Solid Snake is the main character. We were given a side character in MGS2 which was a massive disappointment after playing the Demo/Opening.

Solid doesn't stand for snake, because Metal Gear Solid 3 and 5 aren't called Metal Gear Naked or Metal Gear Boss... Jesus... Do we have to think for you as well? Solid stands for 3D, a solid object where the old ones were 2d sprites...

Its hilarious that after 24 years, people still don't get the point of the MGS2 Snake/Raiden swap.

Anyway, been playing FF7 Rebirth on PC and i still haven't changed my mind about that Cait Shit section in Shinra Manor. Fucking terrible section of an otherwise great game.
Because people are idiots and that's why we keep getting dumber and dumber games because they can't comprehend shit haha

Not only did they take the worse thing from the first game

WORST! THE WORD IS WORST FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

WORSE IS THE COMPARATIVE FORM NOT THE SUPERLATIVE!

WHY THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THIS TREND OF MIXING UP WORSE AND WORST SPREADING LIKE WILDFIRE?

Solid Snake wasn't in MGS 3 and 5. The name of the game is meaningless in this context.

indeed.
the only reason the series continued to use the word Solid in subsequent games was due to the success of MGS on PS1.

Solid was originally simply the subtitle for what was essentially Metal Gear 3.

if you look at the logo it's pretty obvious
1200px-Metal_Gear_Solid_logo.png

METAL GEAR
S O L I D

they couldn't have written it any smaller I think without it vanishing completely 😅
Tactical Espionage Action is written at basically the same font size as Solid... only slightly smaller, but even so it takes up more space in the logo.

but Metal Gear Solid was the breakthrough moment for the series, and so they capitalised on it by just pretending it's the first game in the series (99% of players never heard of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 at that time) and by calling the next one Metal Gear Solid 2...
now of course with the Solid part being equally sized to the rest of the name.

He plays like Aggro Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. (A playstyle some people (read as lots of people) actually like, which unfortunately was actually well OP in Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla so much so it didnt make much sense to go for a stealth build in those games except for the added challenge).

You arent forced to play him except in the prologue where characters are introduced.
From there play Naoe the whole way if you want a more stealthy nimble build.

I dont mind playing as multiple different characters if those characters i like and I enjoy their gameplay style.

In Nier Replicant ver 1.22 in the new route we play as Kaine, I loved it.

In fact I wish we could play enitre 2nd route as Kaine and it would make sense in that route we start understanding what shade saying which it shows Kaine's perspective.

Now I really want the games retroactively named Metal Gear Naked and Metal Gear Venom.

One of the things I dislike most in games:
  • Long sections where you’re forced to control side characters
  • Mandatory on-rails vehicle segments
It’s the main reason I haven’t played GoW Ragnarok yet. I already can’t stand the sections where you have to play as the kid
Geezus not sure how I forgot about GoW. Yes that was terrible.

He is a main character though and he is awesome for me.

This + god of war ragnarok and tlou 2.

Whats up with Sony and the character switcharoo?
Abby is just as main the main character as Ellie... I kinda ended up liking Abby more.

Agreed on Ragnarok. I dreaded Atreus parts and waited to get back to Kratos.
FF7 rebirth Cat Shit stuff was awful. oh my god why would they do that

My additional take is V from dmc 5... I dropped the game on his 2nd or 3rd mission.
Nero was a stretch but he was cool enough but V is lame

Don’t try to be smart. We aren’t living in caves.

It isn’t the only reason. There are 3 reasons.

Solid Snake is one reason. Not Raiden. Not Big Boss. Not Venom Snake.

“And the word Solid in Metal Gear Solid has three meanings. First of all, Solid Snake is a character name.”
– Hideo Kojima, 1999 interview with Steven Kent for Gamers Today.

“This time Metal Gear is displayed in full polygonal form, and I used “Solid” to describe the cubic structure. also, the “Solid” means to the third power mathematically”
– Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid: Official Mission Handbook.
Speaking of three-dimensions, it was also a sort of jab at Final Fantasy series developer and publisher Square, now known as Square-Enix.

“[…] you know, the company that does Final Fantasy. A square is a two- dimension thing. And I guess the president of Konami wanted this game to surpass Square. They wanted to make it a cube, you know, like solid 3D. So it’s got that meaning. too.”
– Hideo Kojima, 1999 interview with Steven Kent for Gamers Today.

Ragnarok was the worst recent offender I can think of.

Def don’t agree with those saying Alan wake 2, saga’s sections were the best parts imo.

So you post a quote telling you that it means 3D yet you continue to fight this battle, aka you live in a cave and still believe the sun revolves around the Earth xD

I like how you la li lu le loed right over the part confirming that the name was in fact also a reference to the protagonist Solid Snake.

Because the Patriots changed what meaning was, bro is the master of retconning and if you can't accept that God Kojima does that then why even play Metal Gear? Hahah MGS has always had a twisty turny plot and shinanigans.

in Metal Gear Solid it was, in subsequent games it wasn't anymore.

the only reason the Solid part of the name stuck around in the first place is marketing.
99% of people who played Metal Gear Solid had no idea that 'Metal Gear' and 'Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake' existed.
they thought Metal Gear Solid is just the name of the IP, so Konami just slapped a 2 behind the name for the sequel, promoting what was originally just a subtitle for the 3rd game in a series, to part of the main title of this new sequel series.

after the first game the Solid part lost all its meaning.
just like the Redemption in Red Dead Redemption 2 was kept in the name because most people didn't know Red Dead Revolver was a thing, and thought Redemption is just the IP name, so it was logical from a PR perspective to keep that name as is for the sequel.

but even Red Dead Redemption makes no sense, because the Red in Red Dead Revolver was there because the main character is named Red Harlow

There's no Metal Gear in half the entries either, that doesn't change the reasoning behind the name.

The Patriots did not retcon the meaning behind the title of 1998's Metal Gear Solid lol

Even Kojima's not that meta

Hehe, you know I am joking, but in all seriousness 2/3 of those quotes mention that Solid stands for 3D and moving forward it proved to be the reason as MGS 2 and 3 aren't even about Solid Snake and in 1 of them he's not even in or mentioned. 5 Has even less to do with Solid Snake, same with Peace Walker, Portable Ops. Metal Gear Acid is the turn based game and there you play as Solid Snake so, what does that tell you? :)

there are Metal Gears in all of them, at least machines that are related to them.

Shagohod in MGS3 is clearly a precursor of the Metal Gears, or at least adjacent to them. so the entire series is themed around these weapons.
I don't know a game in the series where Metal Gears don't have at least a preliminary role

It tells me that the series branched out beyond it's original scope and the title is just a legacy. But to argue that the title is not in-part a reference to Solid Snake is just dumb.

If by metal gears you mean round toothed wheels used in machinery, made out of metal. Than I guess I have to agree.

But if you mean that they are Metal Gears than you would have to agree that Solid Snake is also in every game as Big Boss is just a precursor, or at least adjacent to Solid Snake, and the entire series is also themed around him.
