Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - Releasing December 9th for Xbox / PC / Game Pass - PS5 Spring 2025

It is more like locking yourself in it. Especially on Xbox, where there has been BC back to the 360 on Xbox One. In a way, as soon as you started investing in XBLA/digital games, and making friends on Xbox back during the 360 days, you made the choice to invest in that ecosystem. And there never was a point where choosing to invest in PS (and starting from zero) made much sense, since you already had all of this stuff accumulated on Xbox. Works the same way for PS players now that PS5 has full PS4 BC. Why even buy an Xbox ?

A lot of people do not have/do not want to spend the money to buy both PS/Xbox consoles. These have always been highly redundant, especially starting the PS360 era, consoles take a lot of place too etc...
That's one thing I'm kind of glad I didn't do much of in retrospect. Like 95% of my digital Xbox games were 'free' Games with Gold 360 titles, or the odd arcade title I might have grabbed for a couple dollars( something like Ms. Pacman or Galaga and I've since double dipped those titles on Steam). I don't have much money tied up on my Microsoft/Xbox account so it's pretty easy for me to walk away from. Granted, I've got like $50 credit sitting there but I may just end up using that in the Windows store on a play anywhere title for my Legion Go.

By contrast, I started doing digital moreso with PS4( as a side effect of getting into PC gaming last gen, so I got used to the idea of buying digital whereas before I was mostly a physical or bust kind of gamer) and have much more money tied in the PSN ecosystem on various exclusives, which makes it much harder to walk away from ( I currently don't have a modern PS console but I'm going to grab a PS5/Pro soon-ish as much for continued access to my PS4 digial backlog as for anything current). So there is definitely some merit in what Phi Spencer said last year about losing the gen when everyone was building digital libraries.

It won't much matter if it launches on PS5 months later if it launches to shit reviews like so many of their other recent launches, so hopefully they're putting some effort into this one. It still sucks that it's an FPS but i'll be willing to give it a shot if it at least reviews like it's any fun.

Oh boy...

  • On renegotiating the Indiana Jones game's terms at the request of Microsoft to make it Xbox/PC exclusive, after Microsoft bought its development studio: With "Xbox still being one of the bigger marketplaces for games, we didn't feel like we were going to be overly exclusionary. We felt like it's still going to reach a broad set of folks, and we felt, financially and strategically for the game, that made sense at the time."

It's pretty much undeniable there is a massive shift going on right now at Xbox.

Going 3rd party wasn’t the plan.

Becoming big game developer is.

To make numbers work without getting Google/ Amazon etc involved required some creative thinking on their part.

It also helped them secure Acti-Blizz.

Xbox is getting more and more funding simply cause their plan is working.
Microsoft Gaming, not Xbox. Xbox is becoming an app and its hardware is irrelevant by now.

Yep, I have confidence in Machine Games, but I have NO confidence in Microsoft allowing them to make a great game. After Starfield, RedFall, and Halo Infinite (Gears 4 and 5 being an exception) I don't think MS leadership can recognize a good game a mile away.

Indiana Jones is in the "we will see" category for me.

It's funny how Troy "unsufferable egomaniac" Barker says, around 0.30 of the date reveal trailer, "never would have guessed that after all this years i'll be the one to wear the hat".
Could have said : "i'll be the one who mocap and imitate the real incarnation of Indy, Harrison Ford, because he doesn't care to do it himself", but he choose to phrase it in a way that implies he's taking over the mantle from the Ford...
Quel boloss :messenger_downcast_sweat:
you articulated it better than i could have, i was wondering who this guy is. has he acted in marvel movies or something?

Xbox is a brand not a console, when people start realising that the strategy becomes very clear.

Xbox was a console with its own IP's and ecosystem. It's now becoming an app and Xbox is being sucked into Microsoft Gaming, which Xbox itself is only a small part of. No wonder gamers who have been part of their ecosystem for two decades have some concerns about this. Microsoft's "play anywhere" strategy is not entirely new, but the "any screen is an Xbox" strategy is. After acquiring smaller studios and promising exclusive content since the lacklustre Xbox One generation they've clearly given up on hardware by now. We don't know if this was their plan all along since acquiring Bethesda. I don't think so, but when they announced they wanted to acquire ABK it must've been, it made no business sense at all to launch all those IP's exclusively on Xbox.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - it's because of the way that Xbox manages (and has managed) their relationship with their fans/customers.

They've been running it using cult brand strategies since Phil Spencer took over.

Those who are vulnerable/susceptible got sucked in, believed every word they said, put their necks on the line and basically worked as an extension of their marketing team (some are still doing this, even today, even in this thread, which is crazy to see). So now it's personal, they feel betrayed. This fall-out isn't going to be pretty.

I bet these people think they look really cool doing that X gesture 😅

I genuinely don’t get why this is a big deal to any Xbox player? They still get to play the game, and on the machine they chose, and on release day.

There are better things to throw hissy fits over!

Imagine the opposite situation. PlayStation fan boys were furious when Rise of the Tomb Raider launched first on Xbox One. Imagine their reaction if God of War, Gran Turismo and the next Naughty Dog game launched on Xbox.

It's most likely a case a of Disney telling MS that they aren't going to allow IJ to die on a platform that few people play when it can reach a platform of 50M users.
Doubt it. This would have happened during the initial contract conversation.

Disney isn’t going back to MS after a dump truck of money and saying, “We’re worried by your recent NPD numbers, can you pretty please develop for PS5?”

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
For many, many years, Xbox fans would crow over every announcement, every piece of information, and every news story that placed their box ahead of Sony's. Especially around the time of the XSX's launch.

Following the logic that they themselves employed about their console, the fact that major first party Microsoft games are now going to be on Playstation is a massive, heroic failure on the part of everyone at Xbox.

If the tables had been turned, Xbox fans would be crowing (again) about how their box was doing better because Sony were having to put their games on it.
Exactly.

I swear, there has been massive, massive gaslighting over the past few months, wanna say years.

How ppl were acting is all there in black n white in next gen speculation threads. Might can start from 2018. Especially after the Bethesda acquisition.

He's in some way the Harrison Ford of videogame voiceover :messenger_grinning_sweat:
From 2005 onwards, it was a choice between him and Nolan North for 98% of caucasians heroic characters in video games.
Talking about Nolan North, who arguably has an even better career than Baker, it's crazy to compare both. North is always humble, funny, and seems like a great dude. He seems to be effortlessly as lovable as Nathan Drake. Baker on the other hand seems like the theater boy who made it and now thinks everything he says or do is gold. Plus he has "raconteur" in his twitter bio, and that's too peacocky and vain even for a frenchman like me !

Seriously he's the type of dude that can annoy anyone just by blinking :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Machine Games being made up of Riddick and The Darkness devs is what makes me excited about this, especially since so much of the game gives me those vibes. Especially the whole first person to third person and back thing. I'm hyped enough about the game, as I dig what they do, and I adored Indiana Jones growing up. I'll just play it on Game Pass, and if I love it THAT much I'll probably buy it at a later date. Just cool to see more games coming in 2024 that I care about after all.

It was pretty obvious that was the case, but most people, Xbox fans in particular, completely ignored that statement from Spencer.

'Some merit', just how I phrased it. Point being, as I said, when I heard the original comment I took it at face value for the 4 games to be released at that point in time.

Fair enough.

Also, the entire Business Update they were very clear that all games would be on the table for multiplatform releases though and that it wouldn't be just those 4.

It amazed me some people didnt catch the rather clear messaging.

Exactly. As soon as he said that nobody should be shocked if Halo, Gears, Forza and other Xbox staples head over. I'll bet today's lunch money that MCC is gonna be a Switch 2 launch window title. Nobody should be surprised at what ports over next.

But we live in an era where everyone has the platform to express faux outrage, context be damned.

I’m not even a huge Indiana Jones fan, but I want to be excited about this.

Unfortunately, it looks like a clunky Uncharted clone with a different perspective. Which like I said in the other thread is funny considering Uncharted is just Indiana Jones.

This game *looks phenomenal. I am curious to see hands-on and reviews over the holidays. And I may resub to Game Pass Ultimate for this if it turns out as good as it looks like it may be.

bruh... gathering the reactions online.... it seems this was BRUTAL for the Xbox community (not only your influencers but random Xbox fans).

people keep calling out Phil.

shG3L40.jpeg

with what face is Phil going to talk to the Xbox fans, what spin or excuse is he going to use?.

They are so done.
Yeah.. people in 2024 still shocked or questioning Phils honesty and pr speak are basically flat earthnerss...

So you rewatch that Joel scene in TLOU2 on a regular basis?

I would have loved Mark Hamill to voice Indy. He does a killer Harrison when retelling stories from Star Wars.
