Next gen racing games...

So, what type of innovations are we likely to see in regards to games such as Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, SHIFT?..etc for next gen systems?

Is it even possible to introduce brand new game-play mechanics to these sort of games?

Do you see any significant or "genre changing" elements for the future?

I just hope such game will hit the WiiU. Really, the lack of racing sims is the only complaint I have about Nintendo's consoles and they should finally do something in this direction (I don't know which studio could do it though).

We likely won't get another Shift, but we are getting C.A.R.S, which is about as next-gen as it can get for now.

GT6 Prologue will give you a chance to see what PS4 can do, but I can't see the gameplay being a marked improvement over 5. We'll get a nicer GUI and support for whatever control methods Sony include with the PS4. No doubt, we'll get 3D support.

If Microsoft push the Kinect brand then expect way more racing games featuring head-tracking or weight shifting. This would be particularly cool for motorcycle racing.

I think the simulation genre has almost plateued but we'll see small improvements to handling, car modifying, realism etc. Things like rewind and Autolog/Racenet will be here to stay and provide a nice way of racing against ghosts/beating times.

Next-gen Burnout with track deformation and destructible environments. Add a Crash Junction creation kit.

I want more interactive environments (dynamic crash barriers, gravel traps, tyre-walls).

I want better damage modelling.

I want more dynamic surfaces like snow and mud to react realistically.

I want much more attention to detail on audio quality and positioning.

I want replays to be indistinguishable from TV.

I want more Autovista / Photomode porn.

Really though, I just want GTR3 and enough mods to drown an elephant.

Edit: And I want a new, 'proper' Colin McRae game. And go back to TOCA while you're at it.

I'd like to see some sort of "career driver" mode, where you start in carts and work your way through seasons in various disciplines. I think the old toca games touched on that slightly but I feel there's a lot of room for improvement in that area.

I expect a combination of GT5's best features but fully working this time combined with Sega Rally 3's track deformation as standard.

Awesome list. I concur.

I like the way you think. PS1-era style rally and TOCA games would be amazing.

Speaking of rally games, how are the WRC games? I've enjoyed the 3 Dirt titles, but would love a more sim-like rally experience.

All the features for a good racing experience are pretty much present in racing games these days, they just need to improve them.

A lot.

This probably already exists but I'd love for a racing game to take a leaf from EA and feature something to similar to FIFA's Player/Manager/Player-Manager modes, where you can choose to focus on just racing, or managing a team (hiring drivers, dealing with sponsorship offers, etc) or both. Would go a long way in making Career Modes feel less of a grind...

You play as the racer, starting as a teen earning money from part time jobs until you have enough for your first real car to race with. Work your way up the ranks improving your skills, cars, and getting sponsored until you're a real pro. As you grow into an adult you must juggle your career and your family, and must be able to support them both! Which do you choose?!

Would be pretty immersive :P

Complete destruction
More than 16 cars per race
Improved AI
Dynamic environments

Actual race calendar.
Injury of player characters in a crash, possible death combined with autosave from darksouls.

Basically you crash and heal your leg for 4 months and miss all the races in circuit. ;)

Mmhm, mmhm * takes notes*

Now, how about... instead of all that ... :

You get persistent leveling of your car and driver

You get social community integration, "@fiddy, did you see that sweetass ramp!?"

You get more bloom

You don't get well calculated physics modeling/destruction/mechanics, instead you get the Mister Chief TM Buggy if you pre-order!

You get a great offering of a wide array of day 1 DLC cars, you can buy as many as you like to expand your garage and show off to your friends. Why not take your newly acquired cars and use them in our facebook app.

Things like better graphics, better damage, better audio etc, should be a given really.

As others have said, stuff like TV style replays and commentary(I know, it's a little hard), racing team and management orientation, realistic career progression(starting small and young, ending big and old), career rivalry..etc on top of what we already have would be something to think about.

I know the aforementioned are not the aim of these games, but 'grind' and 'stale' are words that are all too often repeated when mentioning GT and FM especially. Adding some 'life' elements would alleviate some of these concerns imo.

There just aren't enough replay options in arcade racers yet all sims have like a movie studio toolkit for what is just a bunch of cars going round a track very carefully, great for perfecting laps and studying tracks but I want to be able to save a replay of a crazy power-up race in the same way. Replay in games like Blur and Hot Pursuit would have been great.

All I want is for Sega to get their shit together and start making (good)arcade racing games again. I want OutRun 3, Daytona 3, Scud Race 2, and Sega Rally 4.

Ditto for Namco....make a proper Ridge Racer 8 sequel and bring it out for PC with FFB support.

Then I can die a happy racer.

Well GT5 only needs to improve are the tearing, smoke pixelations, and standard cars.
...and the hideously ugly tracks, awful menu's, rubbish sound effects, convoluted menu navigation, broken used car store, wildly uneven frame rate... GT5 is miles away from being right.

^lol

Yep, this last update did wonders to the sound and now all I really want in terms of features is GT5 but better :D Add leaderboards and stuff like that from previous GTs and we're set.

Fuck the next gen :(

I remain hopeful that much of that nonsense will stay in the console space. Sadly, that's where Gran Turismo lives. I'd kill to have that car roster available to PC modders.

Get rid of jaggies and maybe, just maybe find a way to make the tire sounds and the engines sounds realistic.... Especially the squeeking tire sounds are horrible.

Anyway, i much rather see a next gen Motorstorm, Mariokart or Burnout. Sims are a bit boring imo.

BUILT IN online league / season functions that track results etc. Having to do it all manually out of the game is a pain and a waste of peoples time.

Also 24 cars in multiplayer F1 2012 please "Codemasters"

edit: Oh and online replays with TV camera angles!

Get Sega, Retro and the Mario Kart 3DS team together to make a F-Zero game and you'll have expansion and refinement of racing in spades.

Your game has this ugly stuff, and this sounds horrible, and look at the jaggies, and the menus suck and the framerate and blahblahblah.

Some people can't help but missing the point, I guess.

I personally expect ALL racing games to be 60fps and abandon motion blur and piss filter, but I know they won't.

To be honest, everything we need already exists in both previous and current generation in genre, it just needs to be *gathered* under one umbrella and presented as an standalone title.

I want anyone other than Codemasters making sim-lite games again. No stupid exploding shit and powerup gimmicks please.

Changing weather, standing water, real physic modelling of damage would be nice.

I understand, but that would still mean same old, same old. I'm talking about brand new elements that these games don't already have. Something unique and totally different.

Well GT5 only needs to improve are the tearing, smoke pixelations, and standard cars.

It also needs to actually be fun. That is my one criticism about games like Forza and GT5, the latter more prominently, they are just not fun to play anymore.

My fave racing game in recent years is PGR4 followed by Grid. Both are such excellent games and i hope people take that level of polish and fun to the next gen.

No come on now guys, let's help him out :

GT5 ≤
big rig
≥ F4

As my RC enthusiast friend once mentioned, high precision controllers.

If you've ever programmed gameplay type stuff on current gen consoles, you know just how little analog there is in these sticks.

Either make the default controller super sensitive, or sell high precision ones for double the price. People buy wheels, make stands for them... these people would pay for a high precision controller. Also, how about an RC style wheel and trigger controller. That would be cool!

As for the games themselves, AI that feels like you're playing against humans. Good luck with that! :)

I'd just be happy with next gen GT and Burnout paradise. Easily pleased :)

Oh, also, I'd like a next-gen Tokyo Highway Challenge and a new MMO-Racing game in the vein of TDU, but done 'properly'.

A new Monster Jam too. Spread the love.

You refered to GT5 as "your game" hence your protective nature. And also, as davidyoung said, no-one else mentioned a GT/Forza comparison but you. You appear to be complaining about yourself.

I was "emulating" fanboy speak. No need to get so defensive.

I want a proper Ridge Racer, a Colin McRae as good as 3 (last one I owned), and a good NFS too :(
