NPD July 2012 Sales Results [Up3: 3DS Hardware Correction - 124K+]

Yeah Sony and MS, releasing your new consoles in 2014 is a great idea.

MS is going in 2013. Sony seems to be only one crazy enough to maybe wait until 2014. The ball is basically in Nintendo's court for a while to launch a brand new system, but there are many things they can fuck up.

Seems like Sony is boned either way they go at this point, they already have one next gen device out with Vita and that's struggling horribly, how do you release a console more powerful then the PS3 that isn't way too expensive for the market while you can't get your current handheld afloat?

Fun Fact: Batman and Spider-Man SKUs comprised half of the Top 10 individual SKUs for July.

Also: Only two individual SKUs were 300K or better. No other SKU managed more than 88K.

So basically only NCAA was over 300K on each SKU? Everything else under 88K starting at number two.

I think Yoshida put it best.

AndriaSang said:
Visuals are getting a major revamp for 2.0. From the planning stages, that team has put effort into real time shadows and lighting. Dengeki was apparently shown [Final Fantasy XIV 2.0] running on a non-gaming notebook PC, which allowed Yoshida to assure that the PS3 version would look pretty much the same.

This is our benchmark comparison point for the PS3 these days. :p

There are ALOT of 2011 titles on that list. ALOT of 2010 ones, too...

it's almost as though this generation has gone on entirely too long.

2013 is going to be a barren wasteland with the wii u doing its best 3ds impression.

so a rewrite of that sentence would be: 2013 is going to be a barren wasteland

How is DS killing the 3DS? Is the market for the 3DS the same as the ones buying the DS? People are buying the DS are buying a $100 system in its 8th year and has a bunch of cheap games, not a $170 system in its 2nd year where all the games are full price. Almost two different markets.

You can play all those cheap DS games on the 3DS anyway...

If neither the 3DS or Vita have big sales this Holiday, I think the future of handheld gaming on non-ios devices are in serious jeopardy. At least in America

I don't see the 3DS doing any worse than it did last holiday. At worst I think the 3DS will have a mediocre holiday and continue to post mediocre numbers. While 124+ is something it is far below what a healthy new platform should be selling unless the market is severely reduced. Vita is another matter altogether though. Sony wants to sell 12 million Vitas+ PSP at the current rate they won't even hit 6 millon.

if the 3ds doesn't do well (at least 2m with nov + dec) with nsmb2 and pokemon (kinda), then you might as well call it dead right there.

The 3DS sold over 2 million between November and December last year. It's the Vita that's in jeopardy; it's the worst performing handheld/console by either Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft since the PS2 was released.

If it does worse than last year, Nintendo better start looking into the pulling a GBA with the 3DS (i.e. releasing a successor extremely early).

It already is, the market for dedicated handheld gaming devices is shrinking and is destined to shrink even more.
Handheld games will become a commodity product offered on mobiles phones and portable players.
The process will take time but it can't be stopped just like the transition from packaged to digital.

It's hard to fathom the 3DS doing worse this holiday season compared to the last one unless we really are experiencing the end of the world, at which case I don't think we'll be here debating why the system is selling poorly.

Has Vita outlived the Virtual Boy?

Vitual Boy Units 770,000

Yes WW it has definitely outsold it. US alone it is still behind though

Edit: Outlived? No, Nintendo took a year to discontinue the VB. The only way I see Sony pulling a VB would be if Vita sold sub 100k numbers both in November and December. That wouldn't be a platform worth even leaving on the shelf.

Has Vita outlived the Virtual Boy?

Well, Virtual Boy's first game was released in July of 1995, and the last in March of 1996, for a lifespan of 8 months (as far as actively getting games released for it anyway).

So, going from the Vita's Japanese release date it's just about even with it, but, going by the US release date, it still has a couple of months to go. It will obviously clear it, and has games still in development (of course, so did the Virtual Boy when it was cancelled) but, at around 50K systems per month and going down, and making comparisons to the Virtual Boy, that's not saying too much...

If your name is Nonoriri you have to go buy Nanami's tampons.

VB was discontinued 5 months after it debuted in Japan. It took 8 months for it to die in the US.

Sub 100k numbers won't happen in those months but under 200k in them is looking a distinct possibility

How about just usa and japan seeing as they were the only places the VB released?

Vita has sold 863k in Japan meaning it outsold VB entirely in one territory alone. The only comparable flop the VB is the Ngage

That would be PSP levels after it crashed in the west.

BREAKING or not
Vita < 50k

Some of the reason sales are down is because it's been a horrible year for games.

Almost nothing has been coming out.
