NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

With a ballpark 2:1 lead WW I doubt they'll pricecut until manufacturing costs let them do so and maintain current margins.
Based on last gen, maybe not even then - they'll just do "value add" SKUs rather than actual price drops (larger HDD, more titles bundled).

I was thinking that would be in their new fiscal year when they could possibly negotiate new terms with Foxcon. Any idea on how those contracts work?

If we see a price drop I think we'll see it about a month after Bloodborne.

Once the rush of the order & Bloodborne is out of the way. A price drop in April (conveniently a new financial year) is when we will see the drop.

And also provides a boost over the much slower spring/summer months so should give 3-4 months of 'boosted sales overall'

My theory anyway

about the momentum talk, taking into consideration that december is a 5week month, XB1 sales are actually weaker on December than November on a week on week basis while on PS4 they more or less flatlined with a marginal increase in December if I'm not mistaken.

Someone with the exact numbers could normalize for exact ratios I guess

True for the average weekly sales, but the actual weekly numbers maybe something else depending on how big the Black Friday week was.

The Nov -> Dec rise also illustrates just how terrible Wii U did over Black Friday. I know Nintendo's in profit mode but some better deals could've gone a long way.

Price drop for NA only or worldwide?

Nintendo has accepted WiiU's fate and they are not planning to throw any more yens at the situation. The best they can do right now is not to rush the next console and angry the loyal WiiU owners anymore.

There's no way bone wins Jan NPD onwards, until a next fire-sale.

I wouldn't say that, from a casual search I found several of the bundles for XB1 still being sold for $350 at places. The PS4 bundles all seem to be above $400 everywhere I looked.

Not saying that XB1 will win, but I don't think it's given that it will lose either.

So that's 3M for Unity LTD with bundling.

I'll hazard a guess and say XBO sold about ~1.3M in the states, since Daemul said the earlier number was high. Combined with the ~1.2M November sales, and the fact that every XBO came with Unity, that leaves about 500K left over for PS4. It makes me wonder how well the game would have sold if MS hadn't bundled it with every XBO, given that Black Flag has shipped about 11M as of May (Probably around 14-15M WW by now with bundling).

I looked at the post counts, 7-10k diff.
I don't know if this is irony on your part or intentional, but I'm getting flashbacks.

Good. I hope MS keeps kicking Sony's ass for another 6 months the way PSN has been utter shit this fall. Never before have I felt a sense of uncertainty every time I turn on my console. PSN service has been a mess since Destiny launched, not to mention the one exclusive they had (Drive Club) also being a total mess. Sony deserved a severe beating this fall, and hopefully this will force them to better their services and games.

The lack of quality exclusives did not help last year given that I don't care much for Ubisoft franchises (which kinda ruined this fall for me). It will be two years into the console life cycle before I get to experience Uncharted and Ratchet, and still no signs of other beloved sony franchises like GoW or Sly. I love good indies, but my console wont survive on them alone.

Luckily I bought a Wii U this fall, and it has made my PS4 pretty much just collect dust.
As nicely as I can say it, this is a shit post.

I am still a bit confused as to why Microsoft gives a damn about xbox one when all their other divisions makes billions and billions in profit and revenue.

Sony is like peanut and MS is an elephant lol. Why are they trying so hard in a division(xbox) that will bring them fuck all profit compared to other sectors in the business?

Can someone explain it to me please.

Xbox is Microsoft's most positively received consumer brand. They hope to leverage that in other areas (Xbox Music, Xbox Video, Xbox on Win10).

Xbox is also their play for the living room. As computing moves away from the PC to mobile and other connected devices Microsoft does not want to give up on any of their platforms in these areas. This is why they are still pushing Windows Phone. They recognize that the way people interact with the internet is moving to all sorts of different screens and they hope to be on every one, so being on the biggest screen in each home is a pretty important to them.

Long term benefits -- getting people tied to MS subscription services and their ecosystem which (well, based on what gets annouced next week) may also tie in to Windows 10.

Why? Because it hurts your feelings to admit that Playstation has been lackluster lately? There is nothing about what I said that is not true. The exclusives of last year have been scoring an all time low. The PSN service has been severely unstable, and the two exclusives during the fall (Drive Club and LBP3) released a broken mess. Drive Club PS+ edition remains nothing more than a joke topic.

Sony deserved to lose its grip on the American market the last two NPD's, even though I understand that it has a lot more to do with the price-cut of the XB1 than the quality of the PS4.

All I see here is SonyGaf living up to its reputation. Nice input with the gifs, lads.

They probably see in Xbox the potential to propel their other products & services, and put it into more people's hands.

I am talking about the company as a whole, I am pretty sure if the xbox division died, no shareholder or investor would give a shit. In fact I don't think it would have that much of a dent in their results. I know they entered this market to stop Sony from taking over the living room, but that's long gone right?

I think you got that backwards my man.

As for the question of ubi's expectations... No idea.
But I wager they are pleased at least, it's a solid start considering their last racing title was way, Driver SF? This is probably close to like 4x that debut. I wouldn't be surprised if they shipped close to or at 1mm world wide with digital.

Its also got micro transactions built in, arp is going to be high and it has a f2p future, they have to be pleased.

Also, some one said that some of the systems in dragon age inquisition had a f2p feel, could that game go f2p in the future?

At this point in time, given that the dream of "dominating the living room" is dead/ dying, I can't really understand throwing millions of $ away just to win a NPD or two either.

Maybe it's just a matter of pride and to not say "look how many $billions we wasted over 14 years for no results whatsoever" at this point? (unless you count being 3rd or 2nd WW consistently on a market made of 3 competitors a good result).

It wouldn't even surprise me if the Xbox becomes fully a "PC under the TV" box with the integration under Windows 10 next week tbh. If that happens and XB games actually come to PC as well, I'd actually like that (as a PC gamer).

It's just silly that you think that the software lineup has been lacking that everyone should think it's lacking.
Yes, from a first party put it's been a weak holiday lineup, but the PS4 still has the best version of multiplatform games.
How is that not enough?

However the PSN problems I do agree with.

It looks like the XBO handily beat the PS4 in December or am I reading all this correctly?

200K i think? Less than November though.

I understand your frustration, i plan to try and never pay for PS+ (wario pls) but i don't think Sony had a bad holiday. MS sold more yes but this isn't PS3 360 days.

No but honestly, having a platform like Xbox puts them in a great postition for mindshare and popularity. They need that word of mouth and positive perception. Xbox is a very good device for that. If people like Xbox then big chances are they're gonna buy a Windows PC, Phone, Tablet... simply because they're invested in a ecosystem and having all your devices connected is the future and convinient for people. And THAT, brings tons of money for a company. You gotta look at the big picture here.

And also, Microsoft have been developing games for way before Xbox. They always had a strategy for games for PC and now Xbox. It's kinda a part of their DNA, even though people like to say otherwise.

Neogaf is a very poor indicator of sales... This forum isn't a "fan" of any particular game or genre, it's a place people come to get a jump on news and to argue with each other. Too small and too narrowly focused to show trends.

Relatively directional indicator of sentiment for very core titles. Also a place where industry executives come in an attempt to gain legitimate and "street cred. Good place to drive indie conversation sometimes too.

But for big retail games?
It's the "daily Amazon sales charts" of sales tracking, hahah

At least with amazon they have monthly and yearly charts.

But yeah, a lot of times GAF feels like somebody is 'driving' conversations. Maybe it is more like the amazon reviews of games.

Does this completely exclude PC games or no? I would have thought to see Warlords of Draenor on there

I might be wrong, but I would expect a majority of the Draenor sales to be digital. That many xpac boxes would add up. Anecdotal but everyone i've talked to in my guild just upgraded through battle.net.

I know that but it doesn't mean they should still pass over natural strategic opportunities to grow userbase. Black Friday was a no brainer and there were literally no deals for the platform. And the clear rise in holiday demand shows Wii U could've performed much better than it did during that window.

100k more Wii U owners in November would've meant 100k more potential buyers for Smash, Kart and Amiibo in December. Just an unnecessarily missed opportunity imo.

Does that game have any chance of breaking even? It probably cost Ubi 300 mill at the least to make it (marketing included), word to mouth is toxic as hell so it ain't selling, they're giving dlc away to make good and I doubt anyone is spending a cent on the micro-transactions, and assuming your math checks out most of the sales are from console bundles.

Am I missing anything or is this game completely hosed?

Just in NA though? Just keep the brand and integrate it into other products/services.
