Right. It was based off the statement that PS4+XB1 is 65% higher than PS3+360 after 14 months.

Sources of error:
* 64.5%? 65.4%? 64.0%, and they're just wanted to use a round number?
* PS3+360 data over 14 months with all accumulated diffs (not to mention that NPD has revised numbers since we got the data :/ ) compared to 14 months of PS4+XB1 with accumulated diffs + non-public revisions of their own.
* Significant digits says that the end result shouldn't have more than 2 digits, so it's really a 2.3m diff. Could really be 2.25 - 2.34m even if everything else was as accurate as it could be with the provided number of digits. Just because a calculator can give you an answer to 15 digits doesn't mean all those digits are meaningful.

So are you counting Vita sales this month to be almost 170k? Using shinra's measurements from cream's pie graph with 810k for 3DS as the baseline, I got 19k for PSTV.

Having said that, what do we think k LTD PS3, WII and 360 are? I know it's tough since NPD only does the U.S. and the big 3 combine sales a lot when they do talk WW.

Ah yes you're right. When calcuating the number for normal Vita I used total.

I know a couple sites discounted the PSTV. I bought one for my friend at $60.

In this market, even then you don't. Instead, you talk about total number of players worldwide (Dig & Phys), you talk about the ARPU (with the DLC and Guardian edition drops), you talk about avg hours played and engagement. But you never talk about US packaged sales because the street is now smart enough to realize that US packaged SW sales don't tell a story worth reading anymore.

I didn't do too bad this month in my guesstimates:

PS4: 1151k - off by less than 100K
XB1: 1450k - off by about 100-150k
WiU: 550k - off by less than 50k
3DS: 500 - under by a lot (this was by bad one)
PS3: 200k- off by less than 50k
360: 300k - not sure, buy less than 40k off.


I mean, better than some market analysts out there, right?

I mean this theory would make more sense if the 3DS was compatible with DS AC adapters. They aren't outside of the DSi. The real reason they're charging for it is because they can.

I do feel they're still underutilizing their licensing and merchandizing potential and this is a good example of what they could be achieving.

Movies, kids TV shows, apparel, more toy lines, school supplies, and more should all be present.

This reminds me of how Iwata, around the time of QoL announcements, was referring to Nintendo as an "entertainment" company rather than a video game company. Amiibo is likely just the beginning of Nintendo utilizing it's franchises in different ways.

It's possible that the main reasoning behind the decision is that they think the biggest part of New 3DS XL buyers will be people who already owned a 3DS, but at the same time I don't think (just to say) know if they won't put the AC Adaptor in the box of their next gen handheld.

PS3 is surprising, simply because as I said last month in the previous two years the PS3 sold less in December than November. I expected 85k or less.

Why? Because it hurts your feelings to admit that Playstation has been lackluster lately? There is nothing about what I said that is not true. The exclusives of last year have been scoring an all time low. The PSN service has been severely unstable, and the two exclusives during the fall (Drive Club and LBP3) released a broken mess. Drive Club PS+ edition remains nothing more than a joke topic.

Sony deserved to lose its grip on the American market the last two NPD's, even though I understand that it has a lot more to do with the price-cut of the XB1 than the quality of the PS4.

Yeah. The collapse of handheld market has been massive. Of course partly this is because DS numbers were just so insane but even with just PSP you get PSP back in 2008 > whole handheld market in 2014. Crazy stuff.

For Sony rotw is twice the size of US market, for MS - it's only around half of the US market and if we look at US+UK - it is 3 times larger that the rest of the world combined. So for both companies focus is different thus the actions and reactions also differs.

I think they care, but they have such a solid grip elsewhere that I can't imagine they're going to throw everything they can at the USA. If they can stay level with MS in "Microsoft's" territory, I would have to think they'll be pleased. Sony has bigger issues to worry about, namely their financial situation.

They were still transitioning (read:recovering from the their botched initial launch). I think NA is a big goal from them now that top console in the UK is probably impossible

The "two month" strategy is dangerous because if they somehow don't win those two months, they've put their eggs into that one basket. They could easily lose those two months next year based on Sony software, Sony marketing, Sony pricecuts or any other number of things. I hope they go all in for the whole year in 2015. But maybe their strategy makes better business sense. I dunno.

Every thread has someone or something that causes it to derail at some point, there could be more positive with sony as much as it was for microsoft during early 360. But opinions change, nothing is set. I understand what you're trying to say though. The previous poster could have made his points, which were valid, without the need to call it out.
