NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

So between Japan and US Smash has sold like 6M already. Nice.

I saw the NA Smash numbers were roughly 1.3 mill and Amiibos were "almost twice that", has there been any more detail? Are those NA Amiibo numbers or worldwide? Also, are Smash's worldwide sales really nearing 6 million? Holy crap. Oh, is that counting 3DS and Wii U?

42.456mil and 41.871mil

Are you quoting factual numbers or ones you gathered on your own? Part of me thinks it was last month (Nov NPD) 360 overtook Wii but then it was announced this month too, either way that gap is far too big for it to have just happened given 360 only sold 300k~

Where's, Lisa? Your name went perfectly with the picture. :(
RPJ. She'll be back next NPD. :)
What's the PS3 LTD in NA?
26.339mil

Gathered on my own. I don't have access to NPD numbers, just what's posted here and other public data. I believe cream confirmed 360 passed Wii in October. Maybe Aqua, John Harker or Cosmic can answer that.

According to someone with access to the data, it happened in October. According to leaked numbers, it happened in November. Microsoft just announced this month that it happened "in 2014," though.

How often would NPD adjust old numbers?

Whenever they feel like it. :lol I'm sure a big adjustment happened when they got access to real historical Wal-Mart data a while back (has it been 2 years?). Past that, not sure what would happen to make an adjustment necessary. They "restated" November results a bit after last NPD, so maybe that was just more adjusting?

I adjusted my numbers using past milestones/LTD figures provided. I ended up having the 360 barely pass the Wii in October by <20k.

Probably depends on how the GameCreate June 2014 LTD affected the running total. 360 only sold ~60-70K in October, so with a LTD in June to the nearest 100K, there's enough rounding difference to cover that spread. :) Suffice it to say, 360 has sold more in the U.S. than Wii by this point.

Amiibo was ~2.5 m in NA.

And the poster you quoted said Smash has done 6 million combined between Japan and US.

It definitely did. That was the last public LTD I had. I put the 360 down at 69k for October and the Wii at 14k, so figuring the difference then had to be between 55k and 0, I went from there without adding or subtracting more than 5k from any particular month.

Right now I'm trying to adjust my numbers to match cream's pie for current generation market percentages. My Wii U is .05% too high and Xbone .06% too low.

Shinra revised his angles last night. The last one's I saw put the combined total at 150K. Still a big YOY increase, though, yes! Maybe there was some store clearance involved? If they wanted to clear out stock, no better time to do it than with Christmas shopping.
Several retailers had the Borderlands bundle discounted by $30.

Happy to hear that console gaming is still pulling record numbers. Happy to see the Wii U is doing better. Hopefully it means more games for us.

Last gen angles were revised in original post. I get 360 as flat and Wii at like 30 or so K.

I did another measure of the current gen. Using given base gave 1.3 and 579.

NB I could measure these pie chart like 50 times and get like 50 marginally different sets of angles. They're small images and imageJ relies on my hand and eye to delineate the segments.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to do their own measuring.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Is she referring to Smash Bros. for December, I suppose?
Also, Aquamarine, quoting my request earlier from the thread

We've had updates for most recent games on 3DS and Wii U (much appreciated), but is it possible to get some updates for older titles? Specifically

- Kingdom Hearts 3D
- Monster Hunter 3U on 3DS and Wii U (with 4U approaching, so we have a range)
- Lego City Undercover on 3DS and Wii U
- Kid Icarus Uprising (a long time since the last update on this)

So I kept hearing about figure sales for Skylanders & Disney Infinity, but I'm kind of curious about the actual software sales. In theory, in order to play with the new set of figures, you needed the new game right? (I realize Skylanders is on Android now, so maybe that's where folks are buying that now...).

@Aqua, when mentioning Smash Wii U sales as impressive, you said "you wish third party sales were good on Wii U". Have things gotten that bad for Just Dance, Skylanders, Lego & Disney on Wii U? Like gotten worse this year? B/c it doesn't seem like they're doing much better on PS4/XB1 (360/Wii to save them all?).

Worth noting the 3DS only sold ~2.57mil in 2014, a million+ drop from the previous year. Unless New 3DS revitalizes the market, 3DS looks to be on a final decline.

Systems have bumped back from a YoY drop: Xbox did so in 2004, PSP in 2007 and even the 3DS in 2013. I'm not confident it can do it again.

Dunno if there are 2014 figures or updated numbers.

similar $ comps

disney infinity:

So is it safe to say the combined efforts of Marvel and Disney barely had any effect compared to just Disney?

This can't be good numbers for the boys upstairs. Hopefully Star Wars/3.0 pushes this to at least 30% next year.

even though wii u software grew in dec 2014, overall software is still quite weak relative to ps4 and xb1.

take out 1st-party software and you don't have much there.

but what is there is focused around the types of titles you mentioned.

it's just....blah.

good enough for the companies it benefits to greenlight more titles, but bad enough to keep other potential retail developers far away.

it's a weird situation. i'll have to go into more detail about it sometime.

Would love to hear your thoughts on it some time =). Also good to hear that we're likely to continue getting those titles at least for next year. You think we might see some more kid-oriented titles from third parties at least to grace the Wii U then? Like the equivalent of a console Frozen game or something?

Hm interesting. Well at least in the US, I feel the Wii U has started to turn into a "1st party titles can sell on Wii U" this year compared to the "nothing sells on Wii U" prior to Mario Kart 8. Seeing how Hyrule Warriors did pretty well so far, whereas an actual Dynasty Warriors game likely would have bombed, maybe Nintendo will continue these types of crossovers with Nintendo IPs and third party franchises. If those could continue to be successful, it might make the audience more prone to just buying the third party franchises w/o the Nintendo IP on Nintendo consoles. I assume that's a secondary reason of doing this, in addition to just bringing in some diversity on the platform. I assume that's we're getting things like P&D: Mario Edition, etc.

what do you think the chances are a company brings over something like rodea the sky soldier?
Thanks to the eShop I'd say it's a lot easier in all honesty. While I have no idea about an actual retail release, I feel like it's so much easier to release titles like Fatal Frame that may not sell well, but may diversify the library, by taking out the risk of retail. It allows us to keep getting the Ace Attorney games here for example.

Yes, I meant 3DS and Wii U versions. They're still (almost) the same game!

How's Hyrule Warriors doing compared to other Warrior games?

Well I don't know the exact #s for the other Warriors games, but Tecmo-Koei was already impressed with Hyrule's launch #s (exceeded expectations), so I assume it's on the higher side at the very least.

You were a little concerned about Destiny sales after huge october drop. The game had a good holiday after all?

i've had a change of heart towards destiny

roughly 1 million for its first december is great for a new ip like this...way above my personal expectations for the title

the "destiny won't have legs because it's a bad game" criticism is overblown, in my opinion

Significantly better afaik. I don't believe a Warriors game has sold near 400k in the US since PS2, and that's lifetime sales.

to give you a random example of historical sales:

dynasty warriors 3 for ps2 sold 207k in its first 4 months

dynasty warriors 4 for ps2 sold 274k in its first 4 months
