I don't care about this price hike in relation to Nintendo games, but this sort of move certainly doesn't bode well for the chances of game pricing across the board (Steam, Xbox, PlayStation) not following suit, especially with GTA VI having the opportunity to become a trend-setter in this regard.

Gaming is an expensive hobby my friends. RTX cards, PS5 Pro, and yes even the Switch 2.

You should check out the release of the original NES in 1985 and adjust it for inflation, along with the games.

This hobby has always been expensive. Especially for new consoles and games.

Get a used one and used games if it's too expensive for you.
This games look like shit. I am not paying for ps4 level shovelware as much as for a triple a ps5 game. God i hate this shitty morally bankrupt company.

Am I reading this correctly? The physical games aren't even the games and you have to download it anyway?

So I think with this gen, they'll be replacing those download codes in a box (screenshot below) with these new game-key cards. It's better since the license is not tied to your account but to this game-key card instead, which means you can sell and trade the game, but yeah, you still have to download the full game.

I guess this is meant to make it easier for 3rd party publishers because supposedly these new Switch 2 game cards are quite expensive due to the new tech in them, so they want to give these publishers a cheaper option to release games "physically" for the Switch 2 system.

I want to stay a tad optimistic here and say that when prices for the higher capacity Switch 2 game cards drop in a few years, most of these publishers (especially Japanese ones like Square, Bamco, Koei Tecmo, Capcom) will switch to actually putting the game on the physical cart, but we'll have to wait and see on that.

the problem is alot of low income people game. so they wil crush the market if the games cost 80 to 100.

Nintendo, you’re so lame.

I will do what I did with the last three Nintendo consoles - buy it a few years in, fall in love with a new Mario, get bored of the new Zelda, then sell it a few months later when it starts collecting dust. This has been my experience with every Nintendo since Wii.

I don't think $80 itself is the end of the world. Most games will go there eventually.
What kills my interest in Nintendo though is the $80 price tag combined with the no sales policy.

Games are already too expensive for my third world salary, but with every other publisher you can basically just wait 8-12 months and pick up stuff on sale. These Nintendo games launching for $80 will still be $80 in 4 years.
nintendo has a sales policy ,they just know people wil do anything to buy their mario fix. issue here is nintendo is massivly over extending their expectations. becasue of their latest success. most casuals however just need that 1 mario kart ,so i feel this gen wont be kind to nintendo and they wil l get quite a shock when tthose low income gamers dont show up becasue they already have their mario fix last gen.

I'll pay it. Honestly, I think the games are better than the ones on the competing consoles so I'm willing to pay a little more for their increased value. Especially Mario Kart. Imagine how many copies that is gonna sell. This will normalize this price for the rest of the industry. Honestly the industry who has been begging for price increases should thank Nintendo. This will go a long way to raising prices across the board. You hope I'm wrong but the devastation in your heart tells you that I'm not lying.

You can't do anything else. If you thought you frustrated me when you bought AC Shadows, just wait until you find out how it feels when this shit sells like fucking hotcakes. You won't be able to secure a preorder. If you absolutely hate this, too bad. It's happening. Pray we do not alter it further.

Now we know why they cracked down on the emu scene, if the 2 gets jailbroken as fast as the first then holy no wonder people would sail the high seas even more, 4 and a half games equal the base system price....insane.

I hate to say that... buy Switch 2 is the first system i can remember that DESERVES to be hacked after the official revelation.
Right.
Developer deserves to have their work stolen...especially these after evil corporations spend billions/millions* creating their IP.

They are basically going the PS5 route where most games will require an install yet still come on a physical format and can be traded/resold

The only good thing is that unlike PS5 there will be (smaller) games that can be played directly off the card

The game industry has always had pirates. Even if Nintendo had priced the hardware and software lower, it would still be a haven for pirates.

Hell, even the latest games such as Elden Ring, RE 4 remake, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur's Gate 3 are pirated to high heaven, and they aren't even Nintendo games.

Pirates have always existed in this industry.

I think all that these price increases do is to make the big winners win even bigger (Nintendo, GTA, etc.) but the lesser AAA games fail even harder because people will wait for sales. Like never in a million years would I pay $80 for any ubisoft game, or take a chance on a new IP like Indy at the full price of $80. Or to stick with Nintendo, I'm not paying $80 for the new Metroid but I would for the new Mario Kart.

I mean so far this seems to be an exception and them pushing people towards the bundled Switch 2.

DK is only $70 and that's (seemingly) from their premier internal studio.

No developer is being robbed, even contractors are paid to do work... The trademark owner on other hand... :messenger_smiling_horns:
But seriously, i never seen to little costing so much.

What are you on about? This is not about having to install, it’s about having to download the game despite having a physical copy. It’s nothing like the PS5 where 95% of all physical releases do not require a download or even internet access. Only a few shitty Activision / EA / UbiSoft games require a download, but you’re better off avoiding those anyway.

I payed 130 Deutsche Mark (the old german currency before we switched to Euro) thats 65€ back then for Zelda A Link to the Past, add inflation to this and we're not paying more than i had to in 1992.
In fact and that's just my personal opinion, games are to cheap currently, even at 80€s.

If you defend a price increase on games then you're a clown sorry. Defending a price increase on games that look like they're from the ps4 era is even more insane. No one and i mean no one should be justifying this.

All this talk about inflation but no one mentions the relation between quantity and cost. 50 million SNES vs 150 million Switch consoles, not to mention game sales. I’m not saying it eats up all of the inflation, I’m just saying there are more to game prices than just applying inflation numbers.

I’ll stick with physical for this console and resell to GameStop.

Seems like Nintendo wants to keep GameStop in business lol.

What are YOU on about? Every PS5 game I have requires me to install the game on my HDD first, which takes up hard drive space.

It's a similar concept where you cannot just play directly from the disc/cart without first using up drive space.

Alright I thought you were talking about the game-key thing where you have to download the game. My bad.

Yeah, I could see lower income people no upgrading right away. A lot of more casual players are probably still fine with Mario Kart 8.

That said, I also think the popularity of Mario Kart is exactly why they are charging so much for it. They know that for a big chunk of their audience Mario Kart is a basically a "must have" title on any Nintendo machine. A large percentage of people who end up buying a Switch 2 will rather pay $80/90 than not get Mario Kart

This is interesting because this is pretty much how I feel about the switch itself. Obviously not completely the same as outside of ToTK the prices didn't get inflated over previous gens but I felt the quality is slightly worse than their last efforts. And with them never offering their games at discounts(or extremely rarely at least) I just found myself not buying Nintendo products as much as I use to. Literally every other publisher or dev in this industry will lower the prices of games over time, and usually well within a year in most cases. Nintendo seems to be doubling down on expensiveness.

Idk, I'm just one person and could be in the extreme minority here, but I feel like they have been slowly pushing me away over the last decade or so and there seems to be no signs of changing.

Welcome to the Club, Nintendo! Now you can listen to the constant bitchin' that plagued Sony with the Pro. :p

In reality, this thing is going to sell well, raise the base price for their games as a result, and everyone will live.

Game companies always do this (Nintendo included).

Cycle -
1) Company has huge financial success with hardware/software in one generation.
2) At the start of the following generation, arrogance and entitlement begin to creep in. Company begins to falsely assume success is guaranteed and they crave even bigger profits (you can imagine the high fives in the boardroom meetings)! Their arrogance leads them to increase prices despite knowledge that consumers will be h happy. After all, they’re unstoppable, they’ve got the momentum, they just had so much success!
3) Gamers say “Fuck this” and don’t buy their products, instilling humility and introspection through the entire company, often resulting in positive changes in the FOLLOWING generation.

Rinse, repeat.

$79.99??? Are they out of their mind? Not doing it. I’ll just play games I already own. Im fine with $70 for brand new games like DK or when they did it for TotK, but we’re not jumping up to $80 when we’ve barely even started doing $70. Unbelievably dumb move on Nintendo’s part. And not showing the price in the Direct was also incredibly confusing and weird. Not a smart move.
