Xbox has the games. Sony has the sales. How???

You know what's fact? That, here on GAF, the console wars aren't over yet. It's like Real Madrid vs. Barcelona in here except with consoles. People here defending businesses and using their financials as an argument to show how "good" they are is something else indeed.

They have done well financially and there's also major disappointment amongst fans. Multiple things can be true at the same time.

The sucking up in here is maximum cringe. I just want good PlayStation games and I hope they go back to the magical PS2/3/4 period where exclusives were the talking point. Not the lack of exclusives.

Actually, majority of McDonalds's money comes from real estate franchising. "The food" is just the proxy.

They're literally a franchise/real estate investor first.

Makes more sense then. It’s not even the product that puts McDonald’s ahead. Kind of like this generation on Sony’s exclusive offerings aren’t why it’s ahead.

Thanks for asking. Was waiting for it. Here we go. And, facts only:

Xbox has advantages over PlayStation. Here are a few:

- day 1 Microsoft games

- backwards compatibility with 2 generations with much improved graphics

- Much better app support and developer mode

- you can use it as a Media Center (Kodi, VLC). This is not possible on PS

- Internet Browser

- Better Deals on the Store compared to PlayStation if you're a GamePass subscriber.

- Xbox Cloud Gaming works great. I play my Series X games in the bedroom on my Xbox One S without any real lag.

- If you like the above you can also get Microsoft Rewards to make your GamePass subscription cheaper.

I play more on Xbox at the moment because I have a huge backlog and most older games simply run and look much better on Xbox. Xbox has VRR with backwards compatibility and A LOT of older games are locked 30 on PS5, while they are 60 and upscaled and filtered on Xbox. Big win if you like older games.

If Sony's backwards compatibility will be as bad with PS6 as it is now, I will buy a new Xbox for sure.
- day 1 Microsoft games
Sure, but 3/4 of the games from their recent showcase are day 1 on PS if I remember correctly including big hitters like Doom.

- backwards compatibility with 2 generations with much improved graphics
This 100%. BC is one of the only reasons to even keep an Xbox at this point.

- Much better app support and developer mode
Sure, I have no interest or experience here, but I doubt 99% of player care

- you can use it as a Media Center (Kodi, VLC). This is not possible on PS
Again sure. Niche but it's definitely a postive.

- Internet Browser
Who the hell browses the internet on their console. This isn't 2007 and we aren't watching PornHub on our PSP anymore.

- Better Deals on the Store compared to PlayStation if you're a GamePass subscriber.
As far as I can tell the sales are almost always near identical to each other, and PS also has better deals if you have PS+.

- Xbox Cloud Gaming works great. I play my Series X games in the bedroom on my Xbox One S without any real lag.
This is contexual. My experience with Xcloud has been absolutely horrendous with terrible lag, and extremely compressed video. I had a much better experience with both PS streaming on PS5 and Portal as well as GFN. This depends a lot on your vicinity to a server though.

I think everybody should play where they want to play, and while I think the Xbox brand is a shadow of its former self (this isn't exactly an Xbox specific thing as I think gaming as a whole has gone downhill) I'm not saying that nobody should play on it. I just think that it's incredibly daft to not realize why Xbox is losing.

And the other is doing horrible because they're a disappointment to their fans and the greater mass of gamers. They just have a more vocally evangelized group.

I would rather call it common sense than pro-casual, but whatever you say.
It's not though. Exclusives still sell and matter, otherwise we would not be bitching or have this ReRe thread, innit?

Do you think they give a F about being the biggest? Is that how Americans think? Everything has to be big?
I am not American though

Nintendo is by far the most future proof gaming company in the history of the medium. Has by far the best IP's and the most loyal fanbase and respect from industry and fans alike. They don't give a flying F about being on your list. They are extremely healthy.

Nintendo has always made money, even when they had failures. They know exactly what they're doing and they don't need your advice or list in any capacity.
You can either run a shop in backwater alley for hundreds of year, successful shop but that's all, or you can strive for the best, competing for market share.
Nintendo gave up competition and decided to be this backwater alley shop. Sony never was and probably never will be such shop, their strategy is to provide platform for others and you have to be on the top for that. Sony not selling their own toys like Nintendo, it's a huge fancy supermarket where lots of crafters sells their toys and Sony toys just a little extra. And to be supermarket they must be in most visible and visited location.

I want to go back to that time where people were more positive about our hobby. The amount of bitching on this forum makes me question if people actually play games.

Xbox as a console is not doing all that great, but the market decides and as a brand (Microsoft Gaming) there's much to win in the future. It just takes time.

What the F are you talking about.

Nintendo has sold 2 times as much Switch as Sony did PS5 and they have way more (higher rated) million sellers on their hands that have earned way more money and cost way less to make. Result= profit. By that metric Nintendo is market leader.

Nintendo has all the share they want. The reason that they're still as financially healthy is because, unlike other companies, they don't try to go after the big bucks only and be "Nr.1". Who the hell cares about your ranking. They just want to make great games and sell enough of them to continue doing it.

Why do you care about how MS Gaming is doing in the market?

I will say I've been pretty blown away by this. My daughter has been playing BG3 which we bought on Xbox on her non gaming laptop in her bedroom with an Xbox controller with no hassle. While I go off line on the X in the living room, with it set to main console, and play something else. It's a pretty good feature.

Edit: sorry, a bit off topic.

Sony earned more profit in 2024 than Nintendo and like 3 times more revenue.
And market share measured by revenue, it's not that hard to up profit, as Totoki quickly demonstrated, get back market share is significantly harder task.

Because I care about the industry and competition for Sony is good for our wallet and good for the creation of unique experiences.

Definitely agree that there should be more competition in the console industry. I don't agree with your previous take that pointing to Sony's financials is console warrior cringe though. If we are going to discuss facts then the financials are about as factual as it gets and it ties into the OP's original question directly. If we are also going to talk about how Nintendo is doing so well financially, isn't that the same thing? If we are just going to talk about first party output then that's fine, but if we are going to expand that into financials then that should apply to all of them.

I would expect it since the switch release 3 years before the PS5.:messenger_expressionless:

Xbox has been killing it with 1st party titles in the last year but HW sales have gone down.
Sony had Concord and somehow it’s destroying Xbox in HW sales.

How is the even legal?
Define killing it? I’m struggling to find any first party titles that are 9/10 10/10 released in the last year? Maybe I’m wrong but most are 75-80 ratings which are good not KILLING it, but maybe our definitions and expectations are different?!

Sony will never sell 150 million PS5. And they sure as hell won't sell as many first party games as Nintendo.
I mean...they could if both consoles were the same price and a pandemic started where PS5 was the only console that could have decent units available due to weaker hardware, etc...while the competition is trying to release new consoles.

If Sony's backwards compatibility will be as bad with PS6 as it is now, I will buy a new Xbox for sure.

1. Don't care. I want to buy and play whats good. The best games aren't on GP anyway. You won't play Elden Ring, RE, Wukong on there to name a few. Literally all new games I played in 2024 weren't on GP and still aren't (The year started with T8, Infinite Wealth and a bunch of others since).
2. This is true. Their BC is better. But its also the sole reason I have an XSS. I don't really buy any other games for it. I don't have a running GP sub either.
3. Don't care and consumers won't care.
4. Don't care and consumers won't care.
5. ok
6. You still need to sign up first.
7. Is xCloud still capped at 1080p? PS cloud gaming is superior last time I checked.
8. I got quite some value out of PS Stars. A few 20 bucks vouchers in one year. I think they nerfed both since?

PS5 BC isn't bad, they just didn't really boost PS4 games. This is why some games like Mass Effect are better on Xbox, since they aren't PS5 apps. I do think Sony will change it for PS6. But its not the end of the world, in the end you want new games.

There’s a long delay between the action taken by Microsoft and the benefits they reap or consequences that they reap in the future. Secondly, 1 year of releasing good games is not enough. They need to do it consistently for at least 3 years to build consumer confidence and good word of mouth.

All the success Sony are enjoying today are because of the string of good decisions they have generally made.

This thread has made me ponder what first party Microsoft games I’ve bought this generation.

Starfield and Forza Horizon 4. That’s it. I only bought the former because I had high hopes (and wanted the smartwatch), the latter because they had it on fire sale prior to its delisting. Can’t count Diablo 4 because I bought that at launch before the acquisition was complete (though I guess you could count the Vessel of Hatred expansion).

If I didn’t have Game Pass, I might’ve bought Indiana Jones, but that’s it. Had I bought Halo Infinite, Redfall, or Hellblade 2, I would have felt VERY ripped off. Avowed and South of Midnight are also games I’m interested in, but, again, only because I have Game Pass. Neither of them make me want to buy at full retail price.

The only Microsoft first party game I can think of that I’ll be buying this year is Doom: The Dark Ages… on PS5.

Xbox might “have the games” but a vast majority of them are middling efforts designed to prop up Game Pass for quick engagement metric hits.

It's so funny yall make CONCORD (of all games) the shining light of everything PS5, yet totally forget games like Black Myth Wukong, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, etc were all console exclusive or total exclusives last year.
