Star Wars Outlaws |OT| Robbin' Hutts

Why it didn't do that when I found the initial key card I have no idea.
Why would you get all the information on a vault by just finding a single piece?
"Hey finder of this card that opens our vault of treasures, you actually need a couple more, so let me mark them for you so you can steal our loot :]"

Also all vaults can be relatively easily accessed without any "whistling" nonsense, it is even more trivial if you're at least in "good" standing with the faction.

I played some more yesterday until my Astrobot arrived. During a short 2 hour session I experienced:

A bug that caused my controller to endlessly rumble until I exited the game back to the dashboard and rebooted(just reloading a save didn't fix it).

It not allowing me to manually save saying "You can't save while in combat" even though I wasn't in combat at all, I was in one of the cities in a safe area. Had to reload to fix it.

And encountered other annoyances: during missions where you have to interact with something to progress the mission, it won't let you while you're in combat. Essentially forcing you to either be stealthy or eliminate all enemies. You can't be in the middle of one of those missions and just sprinting through it if you choose. You MUST do one or the other.

You randomly can't climb certain hills and rocks. I was trying to climb up one to approach an area from an alternative vantage point and it's like she just hits this invisible wall or slippery patch when trying to climb up where the game just REFUSES to allow you. It's like this game was designed to force you to play their missions in a specific way. The most boring and tedious way possible.

And one more: I found a key card in the wild, which activated a new quest. The quest marker pointed me to a vault. So I went to the vault. After getting caught about 10 times trying to get through, because I tried to do it in a fun way, when it seems the only way to do it is to annoyingly whistle all the enemies over one.........by..........one..........slowly........annoyingly....... and also sometimes when you hold L1 to bring up the Nix options it will randomly select an enemy way in the distance instead of the one right in front of you, leading me to getting spotted and having to fucking restart the damn mission all over again. Anyway, so I got to the vault room and it tells me I can't access it without ALL the key cards. Which it didn't tell me I needed before I got into the fucking vault like a normal game would. I thought the one key card was enough. Once I got into the vault, the mission updated showing two more key cards. Why it didn't do that when I found the initial key card I have no idea. But thanks for making me waste an hour of my time getting into a vault I couldn't even access.

All I can say is I'm thankful Astrobot arrived because I was at my wit's end with Outlaws. I hate this fucking game. Every once in a while I will stumble upon a game that I can't say is objectively terrible, but I just fucking hate. Like it checks every box on things that are on my list of "Annoying things games do" and Outlaws has like 10 of them so far.
Bummer for you. Well at least something else came that can take you away from it. HOpe you have a better time with Astroboy!

Because it's less annoying. I mean, if we're going to be that OCD about realism, why would finding a key card open up a side mission at all?

But this is usually what happens in most RPGs. You find one item that activates a quest and all the aspects of what you need to do in the quest then become visible in your quest log. Why this game doesn't do that is beyond me. It saves the player from wasting time. It's bad implementation by the devs here.

I wasn't able to access this vault without whistling. I tried a bunch of methods, kept getting spotted. There were two guards right there. I had to lure them away. Couldn't use Nix because then it alerts the other guard and he'll make his way over, which means I'm spotted, which means I gotta do it all over again. So I had to lure them one by one. The only effective way I found to do it was whistling. And being in good standing hasn't changed much for me. I was in good standing in one, but those factions still have areas you aren't allowed to go in or you become hostile, and once you become hostile you get back in a bad standing. And the side missions take you into this hostile areas all the time.

Just starting, really, but man the beginning segment was almost boring enough that I almost quit.

Anyone else thinking the same? Don't quit it opens up and gets going.

So far, I think the graphics are a mixed bag... Sometimes they're amazing and sometimes muddy as all hell.

Mechanics are meh, the stealth segments are not fun.

It's cool to have a Star Wars story set outside the standard narratives.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
There's a skeleton of a good game here, I like the faction interactions and missions more than the main narrative.

Some weird design choices and a lot of jank are bringing it down from its full potential.

Let's see if Ubisoft learns the right lessons and can turn it into an Assassins Creed 1 -> 2 kind of massive improvement.

Because it's less annoying.
who decides it's less annoying? It's not annoying to me, your proposal of just instantly revealing all relevant information is what's sounds annoying to me, and they give you the mission because the card is marked as a vault key, you might never realise these vaults even exist otherwise, and now you know you need to get the full information from the vault itself.

And I dunno what to tell you, I've been in and out of all vaults multiple times with and without good standing, they literally all have ways of getting in unnoticed, without whistling once.

I played about the first 3 hours of this and felt Avatar was far better, despite it not being great. At least in Avatar you felt like a badass at times.

I gave the reasons why I disliked the game. I never said other people had to share those feelings.

I don't like games sacrificing convenience for perceived realism. I play games to have fun and to me doing tedious tasks is not fun. I'd much prefer what most RPGs do in these types of quests where if you find one element of a quest, it unlocks, and then in the quest log it tells you what you need to do. So you don't waste time doing stuff that doesn't matter. I don't like wasting time in games and this game has no respect for my time. It wasted enough of it already and that's why I moved on to another game.

I'm on Akiva now having finished the first two. Managed to complete the thief's set equipment and it has made sneaking around a lot easier.

This is one of those games that gets more fun to play as you unlock more abilities and skills.

I'm warning up to the game-play part but the narrative is still lacking and the central character has the charisma of a wet noodle.

Imagining a game with a bigger emphasis on the clans and maybe something more dynamic like the Nemesis system would be an ideal sequel.

27 hours in and I still have one whole planet to go. Really taking my time with it. And not gonna lie. This is one of the better open world games I have played in the last couple of years.

Yes, the stealth is not perfect and I would not consider the gameplay to be in any way or form elite. But I’m having a great time. This is the best realized Star Wars world to date and I’m just having a blast exploring every single map to its fullest. This is so much better than the usual Ubi slog

Nah its too tiring trying to min max the faction stuff. Gonna pick a side and be the best smuggler to Jabba.

Finished yesterday, i confirm the barely 6/10 score, star wars license does all the heavy lifting.

Sabbac is probably the only thing i'm gonna remember about this game in a month from now.

I'm retarded?
Not sure how many hours in, prolly 20'ish, but so far I'd give it a 7 at best which might change only based on how the story ends/comes together.

Atmosphere-wise, I'll give it credit, its very star war'ish if thats a word, I really like the whole mood of the game and exploring it, however it's a bit diminished by how messy the engine is visually. The blur and lack of color depth is annoying tho i fixed them a bit with reshade. Theres a ton of shimmering in a lot of interior places which is fixed by using RayReconstruction, however if you use RR, vegetation and hair and other similar stuff are incredibly blurry and leave trails when moving, so I had to disable it, not to mention the fact that it cuts 50FPS in certain places without any significant visual benefit. Animations are mid af, the tiny guy is prolly where most of the animation budget went. Also the fact that I have to restart every 2hour or so due to the texture bug, that still hasnt been fixed is fucking lol.

Gameplay-wise, stealth is pretty fucking bad mechanically, but I am a stealth fan so I dont have any issues with it, I am playing on the hardest difficulty and Im ok with it. Shooting is ok, nothing really good nor bad. Like I said, I enjoy the exploration so far, finding stuff is rewarding and not extremely bloated and gearing up is ok. Ship gameplay is also kinda basic af, just pew pew and loot and thats it. WOuld've been nice to find some cool locations in space outside of the generic space stations which are all sameish, hangar, market and cantina at the end. Nothing mysterious or messed up to find, it's the most safe game I've ever played and we have to thank Disney for making this shit kids friendly. I was impressed with the wanted system with imperials, it seems to be well thought, theres severe patrols/ships flying around, they put baricades and whatnot everywhere once you get a wanted level. Far better than GTA/Cyberpunk. The reputation system is dogshit and theres absolutely no risk to it as you can safely get in good graces with everyone. Generally all games with reputation system have a bad reputation system implemented so I guess Im not surprised. Ideally it should've been one or the other, and with no way to get back in good graces with anyone once you drop to a certain point, nor should you be allowed to farm rep. It should've been quests/choices only.

Audio wise its great, fantastic soundtrack as expected from a star wars game, sounds effects all are great as well, especially love the quality of the blasters. Voice acting is ok.

Story so far is just mid, it doesnt seem to go anywhere, gather ur crew, do heist, nothing that we havent seen a million times in cinema. Side quests are unremarkable af.

The story is woke in the way you can expect from a modern ubisoft game, at least it made me chuckle a couple of times for how predictable it was.

Its on the nose without a doubt, it's a feminist power fantasy but so far it hasnt bothered me very much. Still, hopefully the games lack of success will finally put a nail in the coffin thats pandering to the niche crowd.
It's not the power fantasy thing, it has all the woke elements you can expect from a modern AAA game.

I'm not gonna list them because some are spoilers.

Still nowhere near panderman 2 level of woke tho.

Ah, well, Ill see. Like I said, how the story ends decides for me whether its a 7 or a 6. People praised the final acts, Im assuming you feel differently?

Wrapped it up on Saturday with 80% of the trophies. It's definitely the most dense, fully realized Star Wars world Ive ever seen or experienced in a game. I had zero issues with the stealth and enjoyed the the combat for what it was (but I also spent hours unlocking skills and doing contracts to get on everyone's good side early on which I highly suggest). No bugs or crashes.

Lots of jank Im assuming they'll iron out. The final few hours of the game were easily the best part narratively (with a couple actual holy shit moments). Wish it carried the same energy all the way through. ND-5 is fucking awesome though and one of the best game bros in awhile no doubt about it. OST was also fantastic.

And just like Forbidden West, the amount of female NPCs and characters far outnumber the men and its disgustingly obvious.

Despite the flaws its the fastest Ive ever blasted through an Ubi open world since Far Cry 3 so that's saying something. I definitely enjoyed it.

Apparently a future patch is going to alter the instant fail stealth missions and some other things. Not sure exactly to what extent, but if they fix some of my gripes, I'll definitely consider revisiting the game. But they'd have to fix a decent amount.

This screams like a game to me that could be much better in a few months than it is now.

Can't do a star wars game without it, can we.

Finished.

Gonna give it a generous 7/10.

Positives:
- Probably the best realized universe in the last bunch of SW games. Much better than the Jedi Survivor/Fallen Order games.
- Once you get some skills, the stealth gameplay is a lot more fun and manageable.
- The faction missions and mechanic can be reworked into something much better for the sequel.
- Some of your companion characters are pretty cool, can see better realized games with some of them. One is a straight-up Garrus version of this game.

Cons:
- Completely un-charismatic main character.
- This is probably console only, but the RT reflection quality is shit. Not much of an issue in the first 2 planets, but Akiva is mostly water and lakes, and it looks really blotchy through out.
- One too many instant-fail stealth sequences for my liking.
- Not being able to carry over weapons other the blaster.

What about the punching armored troopers with bare fists? Didn't that require a lot of suspension of disbelief? :messenger_winking_tongue:

In a morbid way, this games stealth missions are the closest we've been to a new Splinter Cell game in over a decade.

Kinda fucked up when you put it like that, lol.

Where the fuck is that SC remake, Ubi?

God this game is frustrating - spend ages going through an Imperial base methodically dispatching people and am then told that I do not have the vault codes! So I head out of the building carefully, eventually getting to where I think the vault codes are and get "eliminated"... only to find myself back near the door when I need the vault codes! The stealth is poorly done - you get caught all the time at the start - then you get a perk and suddenly you can walk up to a stormtrooper without them seeing you at all.

Really bad game design in various places.

Finally got around to finishing the story. Got sidetracked because this game made me want to rewatch the original trilogy for the first time in a decade+. That's actually what resonated with me the most about Outlaws - it reminded me of a simpler time when I loved Star Wars as a kid. I said this earlier in the thread, but stepping foot into Tatooine genuinely felt like the first time I stepped into Tatooine in Star Wars Galaxies back in 2003 - just classic OG Star Wars, untainted by the prequels or Disney.

Unfortunately, Outlaws is not devoid of that taint. The prequels and sequels' ugly head show up often enough to remind you of what Star Wars is now. That moment when you get to the droid factory reminded me of something horrible that I haven't thought about in decades...

So yeah, unsurprisingly, the story in this game is... not good, to put it nicely. The entire Ocean's Eleven angle feels forced, half-baked, and predictable due to modern writing (There are only two white male characters in the game, and they both turn out to be villains. Black female bounty hunter rebels against one, and slave robot rebels against another. Surprise!). Also, Kay Vess is supposed to be like a female Han (reckless), but she just comes off as an idiot, especially towards the end of the story.

But I still had a good time with the game overall, despite it's many shortcomings. I actually enjoyed the stealth gameplay, despite the complete absurdity of Kay's hands of durasteel.

for someone who does not care whether something is woke or not (all characters could be female and I wouldn't mind) would you still say the story is not good ?

Yes. It's supposed to be like Ocean's Eleven in Star Wars but falls short in many ways. The 'woke' elements just make some parts of the story predictable.

I decided to backtrack and do some side quests. Some of these expert-level stealth missions are diabolical, but it feels so damned good once you finally complete them and get the awesome cinematics and rewards.

Have you found a way to shoot on the speeder without using adrenaline rush?

Sorry Dragon I somehow missed this notification until I was going over them now.

No, so far I still have to use adrenaline rush. I may have missed something though - I am far from a game completionist.

It would have to be the remake with all the women though. It is a bit weird how every strong character in this is a woman and all the relationships spoken of are gay couples (and Kay flirts with the odd woman too). Fine - tell a story - but it does feel like a deliberate effort to make men feel uncomfortable. It doesn’t work of course - because most men are fine with women and gay couples - but it is a distraction taking you out of the story, when the writer’s underlying intentions are so clear. Lucas may have told it badly at times - but at least he was just telling a story.
