The Nintendo Switch 2 | Officially Announced (Switch 2 Direct Scheduled for April 2nd)

of course they could, they could show charge level (seeing as the dock also charges the Switch), they could do something simple like display the health status of the character just by changing the screen to red, or green or whatever to show simple health feedback (some game on PlayStation use this for example on the controller), they could display the time, lots of little things they 'could' have done that doesn't affect backwards compatibility or anything like that (they may still do, you can see some of the screen, but the argument is they could have changed the dock to show more of the screen and actually make it useful in docked mode, but the thing is allow devs to access the screen while docked as they are the ones that could come up with some unique ideas.

Its a fad that reminds me of Fallout 4 feature with using smart phone as a second screen, it was novelty at best. I doubt there is even much demand for it.

Fire Emblem with mouse controls would be a system seller for me, tbh.
I just don't see how they would have the joycons in that particular way in the trailer without confirming this. It mean you could say they're been funny with the mario kart footage etc but I don't think so.

I think this and probably some other things will be the hook for the system. We still don't know exactly what it will be.

My guess at this point is mouse controls and Wii games coming to Nintendo Online ( Though this may come later)

The most underwhelming console reveal ever. Fucking Nintendo, man. :messenger_tears_of_joy: The actual Direct being 3 months away is the icing on the cake. Nintendo can do games, they can innovate, they can keep their customer base happy with the end product itself and I appreciate them, but man their marketing is a clown show, always.

Glad that they've confirmed BC but I'm now most interested to know if older games will get a boost - that's the thing that would most likely sell it to me early on. Unless they have some spectacular titles to show.

I find it idiotic because you could use the screen plus the TV together

It wouldn't make much sense to be using a screen that was tethered to the TV with a cable/dock instead of wireless.

They made that, people didn't like it and they went with a different product that switched instead.

Am I crazy for thinking this might have mouse functionality. There's a bit in the trailer where the 2 joycons are racing each other on a desk?
Is there something going on with the wristraps or?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Would be a weird choice otherwise to have them racing on a surface like that. And they look like mice with the straps.

Nah, no way Mario Kart 9 looks like a PS3 game visually.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck.

I guess what everyone's been wondering is confirmed. Switch 2 has the power of a PS3 Pro.

many things have gone wrong, but nintendo has never been afraid to re-propose them

Yeah. I don't care for the disclaimer that not all Switch software will work on Switch 2- why? What reason could there be for that? So it's software emulation and not native I guess?

I like that the clownish colors are not as prominent now. Solid stylish black with a little bit of clownish color to show that it is still a Switch is perfect.

That looks like a Nintendo Switch 2 alright. Glad to have confirmation that physical Switch 1 games are backwards compatible, too. They already kinda confirmed BC in general, but knowing Nintendo I was afraid it'd be digitally BC only.

The only thing I want to know at this point is whether or not the Switch 2 will have a boost mode for Switch 1 games. And if so, what kind of boosts can we expect? That, and price too, of course.

Not liking how they say some Switch 1 games might not work. What does that mean…? Ps5 situation where like 6 games no one cares about, or an Xbox one situation where 360 games need to be supported in a game by game basis…

Also doing this and then making everyone wait until April for more information is crazy work.

The leaks and speculation between now and then will be ridiculous.

I think it's just the standard wording to avoid any potential issues. I mean, Nintendo probably won't be testing every single Switch game for 100% compatibility, but the vast majority should be working fine.

I wonder if the original plan was to announce in April but they finally had enough of all the leaks and not controlling the message and forced out this pretty shitty teaser.

Right. It still makes no sense to use a screen in a system docked to your TV. There is very little possible utility, there is high probability for bad living room setups, and it would serve mostly just to create resource conflicts in exchange for those problems.

What Nintendo should do as a way of not completely abandoning their ideas is just allow Switch systems to be wirelessly connected together. This is a better way of fulfilling the vision behind GC/GBA connectivity and Wii U than removing the front panel of the dock.

It definitely does. Peoples have analysed these to hell and back and the joycons have an optical sensor.

Look at the shape of the bumper, it's a quarter of a circle, it'll be like a mouse wheel but touch sensitive rather than mechanical.

I didn't even look at that. That's interesting, I'm surprised it's not just a beefed up switch running everything natively.

Sad face.
Different joy con size means Labo and Ring Fit won't work.

I would imagine its games like Labo or games that really use the physicality of the switch controllers. 1 2 switch might have issues. Games that maybe use the IR sensor camera? Wario Ware perhaps that sort of thing.
Maybe that Mario party games where you had to put the screens on a table together? I'm just spitballing.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's more them covering their asses instead of saying 100% of games will be compatible.
Maybe some random third party games might not work at first. I'm fairly sure all the first parties mains will work fine.

Marketing surely has changed a lot for gaming companies.
A new console trailer is shadow dropped and it's the opposite of inspiring.
The design is pretty much the same but bigger, it seems the only new feature is the mouse-like functionality of the controller.
They're suggesting that a remaster or expanded version of the current Mario Kart for Switch (looking at pretty much the same graphics) will be a showcase title.
It's basically a mid gen refresh.
It's a new MK.

Personally whelmed. Kind of a 'yeah here it is, now shut the fuck up for another 3 month' reveal. Would have preferred something that better showcased QOL improvements since it's an iterative console, and showing a (presumably) MK9 that doesn't look much different( on the surface) from MK8 was a choice.

Also, since the cat is now firmly out the bag, Nintendo is fine with close to dead hardware sales until May/June( I'm guessing that's the launch time if they're doing a direct in April)? What is the strategy behind a first reveal today and a 'stay tuned for more into' in 2.5 months?

I'm on the "I'm glad they finally announced it and let us take an official look at it" team.

Remember, this *COULD* have been a pivot/alternative first showing from Nintendo after all the leaks hit recently.

This is Nintendo getting back control of the narrative IMO.

I'm happy it was revealed. I can wait. System looks sharp and nice. Will fit in good with the home theater aesthetic although
I'm sure they'll have some killer special game tie-in systems and exclusive colors.

Once they start showing the deluge of games, everyone will be drooling(if not already). :messenger_tears_of_joy:
