Windows Central/Jez Corden: Xbox's new hardware plans begin with a gaming handheld set for later this year, with full next-gen consoles targeting 2027

It feels 3 years late to the party in now a very crowded space

Some of us have talked about this handheld for quite awhile now and most people here knew this was coming

Just doesn't feel needed imo
These "high end" handhelds are only selling in the couple of millions anyway, seems like a bit of a waste of resources from console makers. The Switch is its own thing, I don't think Sony or MS do well when they try to copy nintendo.

Just another Windows machine is a head scratcher imo also confirmed by an actual source here
The decision to launch a Windows-based handheld is overwhelmingly logical.

Could anyone really expect an Xbox Handheld in 2025 that would need specific third-party support??? You would need a handheld with the power of XSS and that is impossible today.

The association with a partner and continuing to be based on Windows ensures support and will surely serve to test the market and serve as a test bed for a future 100% proprietary handheld and its desktop proposal.

Then, I am interested in knowing more about the new controllers. Will they release new Xbox controllers with new features before the new hardware or will they wait for a joint launch???

I don't see the point. Gaming on phones is decent enough for those times when your on bus or waiting room etc.

I don't believe the 2027 timeline unless something happened internally and no I don't believe another handheld then, will still be a 2 sku "console" approach with this handheld

Very good point
So basically a pro handled planned for later?. Makes sense. Could be interesting device especially if it uses fsr4 or something, especially for people already in Xbox ecosystem if it allows you to stream/play games you already own or from gamepass

100% why I don't believe the 2027 timeline as was specifically told they wanted to not launch around the same time as the PS6
PS6 won't launch until at least 2028, imo. PS5 should still be selling gangbusters over the next few years. I also think world events, chip shortages, and tarrifs could delay next-gen releases.

And releasing an 800$ console that plays the exact same games as current gen consoles won't be worth the upgrade for most consumers. The PS5 and Xbox Series generation will still be viable until 2035

Yeah, makes sense. They need to sort out the software to run Xbox apps natively or they can do one.

Nah, it’ll just be another Windows 11 handheld with an Xbox logo on it

So like the Legion Go I'm using Gamepass on right now, just with an Xbox sticker? I feel like the hook would be if you could access your Xbox 'console' library.

Still waiting on Xbox game pass on PlayStation. That must be the plan right? Every title is already being made multi platform.
It could be their plan, but it's not their decision alone. They also need a complete separate version that will only include their first party games on playstation similar to EA or Ubisoft, which aren't that many yet. These things take time.

I’d be intrigued by a ROG Ally 2 that had a hybrid OS and could play my Xbox library

seems like the only way we’re ever going to get Lost Odyssey & Blue Dragon officially on the go since they refuse to remaster/port them to PC

I knew they'd do that, playstation is no longer their target, it's Valve and Linux gaming. Windows is so fucking shit now that if Linux gaming becomes popular they're fucked, for me and many other people it's the only thing that still keeps us to Microsoft's god forsaken spyware OS

I actually agree. I think Sony is going to start thinking of their systems like PCs more than individual generations. I'm not sure about exclusives though. They might do it like this gen where some games were truly next-gen only but some were still on both.

Make a little app in Windows that opens up to a Xbox dashboard.

I dream. :messenger_sleeping:
I wonder if that's part of their forward compatibility team initiative( under Sarah Bond), to have both PC and console in one combined ecosystem that can be played on any Xbox branded hardware ( or compatible partner device). Would really take the 'play anywhere' thing to the next level.

That would kill the reason for the PS6 to exist. No way there's a 7 year cross-gen period. It'll be 2-3 years. MAX!
