The reception of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in Japan, based on Amazon Japan sales and reviews, is brutal

Let’s be real, if the Samurai in question was William Adams then the outrage about this game would be a fraction of what it is now. A lot of users at Resetera would be up in arms about using a white guy instead of somebody Japanese. I’d also wager a lot of users here that have a problem with Yasuke (because Japan respect or whatever the latest nonsense is now) would be laughing at those silly leftist snowflakes getting upset over a video game.

For development costs? A quick google search will spit it out, it‘s estimated between 250 and 350 million + around 100 million in marketing. Ubisoft won‘t give us exact numbers though.
Bro these numbers appear to come from an Asmongold reddit post...

And yes I do hope it‘s a financial loss. Maybe then Ubisoft will rethink about the Ubisoft formula.
That's probably clouding your judgement a bit.

So ubi could do proper diligence and represent asian male as a samurai, which 99,999999% were, or fuck up and claim yasuke was samurai, and they chose him instead.
Its like they would do slave plantation simulation and decided protag not gonna be black slave, but that extremly rare poor white man that got enslaved coz of debts... hypocrysy is crazy here.

Btw, yosuke had black privilege in japan, according to wiki, his life was spared coz he wasnt japanese

Which means where his brothers in arms got defeated by overwhelming force, only yasuke, and only coz of being black, got spared- so others were killed/slaughtered, he got sent back to jesuits, like a lil bitch, unworthy of samurai's name, a coward, a disgrace...
Listen I said from the beginning is rather have had a Japanese shinobi instead of dual characters. I love Naoe, she's cool.

But also its just a videogame, no need to be upset. Yasuke doesnt make it a bad game

He was basically a pet bodyguard, without proper recognition, as confirmed by his enemies sparing his life while proper japanese samurais were all killed/slaughtered after defeat.
It doesn’t confirm anything. Mitsuhide Akechi betrayed Nobunaga and Nobunaga was hated by his contemporaries for favoring westerners among other things.

The only one who would have a say regarding Yasuke’s status was Nobunaga and he was dead at that point. Akechi’s treatment of him doesn’t prove or disprove anything other than that in Akechi’s eyes, he wasn’t worth killing, but I’ve even seen people postulate he just used that as an excuse to spare him, which I doubt.

Whatever the case, Akechi’s views on the matter aren’t relevant because he wasn’t the one who would have made Yasuke a samurai anyway.

These are all cool as fuck. Guile's haircut alone is something we can all aspire to. ;)
Most of avg americans would love to be/look like that :D

When only talking about the U.S., then the average man, 20 years of age or older, weighs 199.8 pounds (lbs). He also stands around 5 feet 9 inches tall and has a waist circumference of 40.5 inches

In contrast, the average U.S. woman is both lighter and shorter, weighing 170.8 lbs, standing 5 feet 3.5 inches tall, and having a waist of 38.7 inches.

Aka both are fat fucks, japan idolises americans hard :)

I look at it from polish perspective, same way like japanese ppl, we polish ppl didnt colonise africa, no1 had black slaves here and profited from them(slaves were called peons and were white just like every1 else) so i dont have that white man guilt complex many westerners have, we dont owe black ppl shit, hell avg black person in the west is richer and has more opportunities now from me, avg polish guy...

Ubi made game in feudal japan, where there were no black ppl and no black samurais, and yet they decided japanese man isnt good enough to be protag, thats shameful af and shows ubi's true colors, they are racists af.
Where do you get that info from. I don't know anyone with that guilt.

All of that was already a reality but because the Japanese made it it's kosher:

Is this one of those threads where a bunch of people who aren't Japanese, both ethnically and nationally, are going to call them bad and wrong, but also consider themselves saviours :messenger_tears_of_joy:

let Japanese people feel however they want to feel. If there arent hurting anyone then why do you care?

Ubisoft has said every assassins creed game triess to be historically accurate and at time can even be used for education.
they have never stated the game was a retelling of history. "We did our research" usually has more to do with getting the archetecture and plantation right than whatever it is people try to make it out to be.

Ghost of tsushima made the same claims while obviously having just as many innacuracies and fiction.
Does this include the overarching story of the 1-3 trilogy spanning hundreds of years that involves aliens and alien artifacts of supernatural power?

It's always been well understood that the AC franchise mixed historical fact with very unrealistic things. To deny that is either forgetful or disingenuous.

Enemy Description
Yasuke, widely known as Obsidian Samurai, is one of Oda Nobunaga's retainers. Indeed, it was Nobunaga who gave him his Japanese name. A giant of a man who came to Japan from the African continent, he first came to Nobunaga's attention when he was working as a missionary's attendant. Nobunaga promptly asked him to work for him. Yasuke subsequently took part in Nobunaga's military campaigns, including the subjugation of Koshu province. During the Honnoji incident, Yasuke was at his master's side until the bitter end.

At this point, Nobunaga ordered Yasuke never to allow his remains to fall into the hands of his enemies.

Yasuke, who had sworn eternal fealty to the master who had granted him not only freedom, but also the rank of Samurai, was determined to faithfully carry out his Lord's last command. Although he could not save his master's life, he succeeded in removing Nobunaga's remains from the temple of Honnoji which was ablaze and in danger of imminent collapse.

Going to be a lot of updated Amazon reviews for Nioh coming up. If only Team Ninja wasn't clouded by White Guilt as well.

If I’m not mistaken, those reviews from Amazon JP aren’t verified purchases. See the Amazon US has “verified purchase”. Meaning you’ve got a bunch of accounts making reviews for the game and their account says they didn’t buy it.

As a guy from poland i fully understand my japanese bros, ubi devs aka french canadians still suffer from some kind of mental problems(white man guilt? serves them well for colonising half of africa) and they put in black protag in feudal japan, not some side character thats meaningless but protag that changes the history.
Its crazy disgrace and ubi deserves to be punished for it, game gonna perform well below expectactions.
To our american bros thinking how come- imagine Luke Cage in the middle of harlem being white ginger skinny effeminate dude instead of this one we got:

Think of it ubi making luke cage game, in the middle of harlem and he is played by mashinegun kelly:

Yasuke in traditional samurai armor looks extremly historically inacurate:
It looks just as artocious as black german soldiers in ww1, which battlefield1 did ;)
Or black german nazi soldiers in ww2 that cod vanguard did, or female soldiers on the frontline(while we know it was only female sniper units on the soviet side, aka no close combat).

Wokeism, feminism and political correctness newer makes game better, for some its neutral, for most it makes games worse.

You people will find any excuse to cover the real reason you’re upset. Because there’s a black person in the game.

Your Luke cage analogy makes no sense. The live action series is based on an actual comic that features a black guy, with a story line and setting that needs a black guy to work.

How is it ‘black privilege’ when it says he was spared because he wasn’t Japanese? So basically, he’d have been spared if he was Spanish or British or pretty much anything but Japanese.

Him having been samurai isn’t factual. It’s a debated question.
If you read at the bottom of that Wiki for sources is all you need to know.

Lockley, Thomas (February 2017). 信長と弥助 本能寺を生き延びた黒人侍 [Nobunaga & Yasuke: The Black Samurai who survived the Honnoji Incident]. Translated by Yoshiko Fuji. Ohta Publishing. ISBN 978-4-7783-1556-6.

Fyi, this is the same guy who modified this Wiki page multiple times (last 03/25). And was no doubt one of the sources Ubisoft used for reference. The book written by him was fiction based loosely on Yasuke.

I don't cite wikipedia and neither should you. If I believed Thomas Lockley, I would have said he is a samurai, but I don't and say it's debatable because there is evidence for it, but there is also some evidence against it.

Well, work on AC: Shadows started sometime around October of 2018. (So around 6+ years of dev time).

The main studio working on AC: Shadows is Ubisoft Quebec, which has roughly around 600 employees. But as many as 17 different studios actually worked on the game. With an average salary $75k (being conservative here), salary alone for just this one studio would be $270M.

Experts estimate the development cost to be around $250M - $350M.

Ubisoft doesn't make $80 per copy sold, as Microsoft, Sony, Steam take 30% of the revenue when sold on their platform. At $56 per copy sold, it would take 6 million copies sold to make around $336M. Which still isn't break even if the upper limit of $350M of dev costs is to be believed.

When you add in marketing costs, other expenses and the salary of other studios for the time that they spent helping develop AC: Shadows, the actual costs are probably much much higher. It wouldn't surprise me if the break even point is actually around 10M copies sold.
This is the point people keep forgetting…. Ubisoft is using this game to push their subscription service - Ubi plus and because of that I am sure they didn’t expect to “break even” out the gate in week 1 because naturally most people would play the game through the sub service instead of playing full price. It’s the same strategy with game pass.

Now it can be debated if this strategy makes sense but that’s a whole another topic, the main point is this game’s sales will be impacted by being day one in the subscription service and Ubi expects that which is why they reported “player” numbers for now.

Ah quoted the wrong person, apologies. But I agree. Wiki can be spotty if you're looking for accurate information. Particularly on debated topics. People need to check sources before posting.

But yeah the same guy was caught lying and went dark after being found out.

couldn't agree more, Ubisoft make it a bad game, Yasuke and Naoe has no blame on this.
