[Digital Foundry] Silent Hill 2 Remake on PS5 Pro: A Mixed Bag of an Update... And PSSR Has Issues

The crazy thing is the clarity and sharpness is there. It is pretty much comparable or looks a bit sharper to the base version running at a much higher resolution especially the fidelity mode.

The issue here is that the increase in sharpness is not substantial and image stability take a gigantic hit with this version of PSSR.

So the solution here is either implement a new PSSR version with DRS or stay with the base ps5 version and upgrade it from there. I like to see the new PSSR version with DRS back in though if the stability issue can be solve.
Interesting enough earlier versions of PSSR didn’t support DRS, this could be another case of an early PSSR version being used. Also Silent Hill has issues with reflections on the base model in performance mode (even on PC in some settings) so no doubt the issue is made worse with this patch.

Devs need to update to the latest version, consider not using or toning down sharpening like Rift Apart, and get their denoisers in order.

Where did you get the information about PSSR did not support DRS in the early version?

You guys sound like that other place right now. Think about that for a minute.
What you should be thinking about is posts like that instead of coming after those who rightfully called it out. “You see it on all sides”, except in here, no one provoked that sort of post. So, no, that one-size-fits-all doesn’t work.

I'm just really curious to see what Bloober is ultimately "working on". I was legit considering getting a Pro for my second SH2 playthrough because my first was on Performance. I'm pretty clueless about all this technical jargon so am I a dumbass for expecting a smoother Quality Mode-like option on the Pro? I didn't choose Quality due to the sluggish feel of the controls compared to Performance mainly, felt like input delay?

No, because so many other games provide the experience you’re looking for. Blooper should have handled this better and are now aware of it. So, hopefully, within in the next few days/weeks, we see a proper patch.

Let me see... So PSSR is putting extra extensive development time? Good job, games already take years to be made, now devs need to deal with another thing...

Yeah, as they did when DLSS, XesS, FSR, tessellation, etc… came along. It’s part of the job and how technology works. It’s a good thing.

Besides, it’s not like devs were broad sided. This thing has been in development since the PS5 dropped.

Generally speaking you shouldn't expect anything until the patch has been released and analyzed.

I agree. Anything below 1080p should not be using Ray tracing. Problem is that UE5 defaults software lumen so it cant be disabled. I think devs need to just stop releasing 60 fps modes. They dont look good. 75% of ps5 owners are playing these terrible looking modes with half of the settings disabled or paired back.
Hmm what do you mean that software lumen can't be disabled? Pretty sure Tekken 8 has it disabled. And I agree that the devs were most likely oversold the Pro capabilities by Sony. Everyone was.

That's the crux of it. Prioritize resolution over other settings like RT. Get to that baseline with something PSSR can actually work with. But stop releasing a Pro patch before it is ready. As I've said before, this isn't unknown to the devs. They don't have to have DF tell them where the problems are or how bad it looks with all this shimmering.
You know it's sad because a lot of PS4 games got resolution boosted to something insane like 1800p-4K on PS5 and they look better than the current gen only games IMO. They're so sharp and clean. The PS5 shines the most when it simply brute forces high resolutions and frame rates in past gen games.

Yea, and on top the OG Performance Mode also cuts off lighting, shadows etc, most notable in interiors.

Not the way I'd recommend anyone play the game at all.

These developers are abusing upscalers. They are striving for greater visuals and the hardware they are working with just can't handle it. Not at 60fps. Going to be interesting seeing 3rd party developers use DLSS on the Switch 2 and how low they attempt to upscale from.

If you disable lumen in ue5, you don’t get the same lighting quality.

Original leaked documents.

Additionally, it needs to be highlighted that the denoiser in Silent Hill both on consoles and some settings on PC? Is broken both at lower resolutions and irrespective of resolution. So it’s no surprise PSSR, no matter the version, would further that issue at lower resolutions.

Let’s take a look at a still shot on base PS5.

Not saying you’re doing it, but a lot of people are seeing any issues and not even bothering to look at the source material.

If you go to the section ‘visual problems’ Alex talks about and shows unstable hardware lumen. The issues happen no matter the upscale solution used. Funny enough the on off flickering (not discounting all the other issues mind you) reminds me of the weird flickering seen in Jedi.

Digital Foundry in this OP video mentions that PS5 Pro has added AO compared to the base PS5 wonder if it’s also creating issues.

There’s no ‘PSSR can’t work with real-time Raytraced lighting’ despite what some snake oil salesmen would have you believe. Devs need to get their sample rates, denoisers, and PSSR versions sorted most likely. Other games have shown a swimming and strobing effect with PSSR, something that was only present in the preview build of Rift Apart but fixed by release.

Right, you have no argument.
No, it's you who have no argument. When I got here it was before this generation, and from my perspective, Xbox was doing things right, and PlayStation was doing things wrong, at that time. GP was giving people cheap access to good games, and One X was a much better piece of hardware than the PS4 Pro was, again, at the time. Also, when I got here I didn't know how to act because the PS fans were really attacking GP and Xbox without knowing how good it was and acting very fanatic, so I started out that way until I realized blind fanboyism wasn't cool here.

Since then, I see how backwards Xbox has been this gen and I don't defend them any longer. Hell, I don't even buy games on Xbox because of their idiotic decisions. But you have to understand, PlayStation doesn't always get everything right, all the time, and this is one of those times. People that don't like the constant fellatio of PlayStation are going to strike when Sony stumbles. It would be hypocritical to complain about the other side smelling blood in the water and cry about them and want them banned. That's some petty bullshit.

And before anyone accuses me of being anti-PlayStation, I probably have more PS systems and games than 50% of the PS fanatics here. I like them, I just don't blindly worship them.

Cool, but irrelevant. His post was the issue and you remain without an argument. So, he gets a pass from you and your allegiance is obvious. Think about that while you beat your chest about the amount of PlayStations you claim to own (of which, no one gives a shit).

The developers of SH2 remake, Star wars Jedi, and Alan Wake 2 developers, really needs to address the situation and I think Sony needs to help which I think that is what they are doing right now. This three has problems with ps5 pro. But overall, most of the games running on ps5 pro looks impressive..

SH2 devs said they are aware and are working on it in yesterday's tweet.

All developers should keep the original modes instead of forcing broken updates.
I hope they add a Pro mode when it's ready.
The image quality comparison between TSR and PSSR was interesting.

Obvious rendering issues aside its interesting that PSSR is producing a much sharper image in Quality Pro mode with just 1080p input vs the original Quality mode that used a much higher resolution.
Whats worrying though is that it can't achieve 60fps even when upscaling from just 1080p. Way too far off the promised Quality like settings at 60fps.

Totally agree.

The option of "PS5 vanilla settings" should be available on the Pro.

Just got this on ps5 in the sale after coming from PC.

So obvious things are cutscenes 30fps - jarring. Also if this is the fixed version I can't imagine the old broken one must have been horrendous.

Performance seems really solid so far and the IQ is decent It's obvious it's running at like performance mode on DLSS .

The hair looks like ass which reminds me of all the mods needed on pc to fix it all.

Overall though it's definitely smooth in gameplay and more than acceptable if you want to run through it.

Fucking hell man, why ?
From what I understand, the Pro patch is still shit, correct ?

I have the money ready but I just don't know, I can wait if it's to be properly "fixed" or, perform and look better in the coming months...

Also, since I didn't follow the whole Pro patch saga, is it purely down to Bloober and the patch being shit/a hack job OR, just like Alan wake 2, the game's already heavy on the PC side and not much could be done on the Pro ?
Honest question...

Cheers

Yeah so it was very heavy on PC it stuttered so much at the start and bloober took forever to patch it amd it's still not perfect. You have to rely on mods for it to be fixed. It's definitely possible for them to make it look great and run great but guess they aren't that great technically.

There is artefacts it can't be denied. So the fog makes it smear a little on pro but isn't constant just the odd time you'll see it. The bigger issues is the puddles in game have a weird like smudging effect at their edges.

All in all though it does run well and you'll still get the full experience of the game. It's just there's some glaring issues I'm surprised the devs didn't fix despite this patch.

I've compared the Quality vs Perf mode as well and the perf mode looks cleaner and sharper. The quality mode seems to have a little more depth to it. But it's a hairs difference.

Side note HDR is a mess on ps5. Needed a mod on pc to fix.

Well, shit ...

I just can't anymore with these incompetent Bloober hacks, THIS is why I didn't jumped from joy when I heard that they were the ones doing the remake - not even after the game reviewed extremely well, I just KNEW shit like this would happen.

If only this were restricted to Bloober. Respawn did a hack job with Jedi Survivor on all platforms. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is a bit of a mess. The Pro patch for Alan Wake 2 is awful. Callisto Protocol seems awesome on the Pro but is still a pile of shit on PC.

Bloober are not the exception, that's for sure.

So I just checked out this new patch and it's still shit...still noticed flickering lights and the gamma still is messed up...

Also, what does the patch even do? The 30 fps mode graphics don't look better and while performance mode looks a little better it's not at the level of Quality modes visuals so ....it's a garbage Pro patch still

Dude Jedi Survivor? It looks SOOO much better than it did before I truly don't understand the criticism for that one

It's mostly lumen. On PC it's much better with hardware lumen and you can improve that further with ray Reconstruction on nvidia.

That's a lumen glitch. The flickering from PSSR is gone with this patch.

Any video to show that?

The reflections boils even on pc with amd gpu with raytracing on, i don't know about nvidia. Ultra mod on nexus fixed these and they are much more enjoyable now, with the mod.

On my 7900xt with hardware lumen enabled in the ini, the boiling reflections are still present and only with ultra mod from nexus these are properly fixed!
