[Digital Foundry] Silent Hill 2 Remake on PS5 Pro: A Mixed Bag of an Update... And PSSR Has Issues

Tried the SH2 patch briefly.
They didn't fix much.
The image looks sharper in quality mode but the worst offender aka the borked shimmering reflections are still there.
Also I've noticed that when you launch the game in the menu screen at first the game looks good and after a few seconds there's a gamma change that makes everything look more washed out.

Bloober if you don't want to bother at least implement the option to play the original with game boost, it's absurd that with these issues they are removing options.

There should be OS switch for games to think they are running on standard PS5, kinda like supersampling on PS4 Pro (games thought you have 4k tv). Developers will always find ways to fuck up so that would save players from their bad choices.
Or the developers implement it in their patches! I agree either way. Keep things optional!

Sony should start penalizing devs for releasing Pro Patches that have clearly not been tested in the slightest. Like, how did that first Pro Patch even make it out the door? Did literally no one at Konami load it up on a Playstation Pro and see what it looked like?

It's bizarre right? How does that happen?

Penalize devs for doing extra work that doesn't equal extra pay when it's your company that added the extra work load on the devs?

Sure that will work out great lol

Is this incorrect??

The reflections especially on the puddles are still broken and noisy/shimmery, they looked better on PS5.
The image might look a bit sharper.
Quite frankly they should implement the option to play the original with game boost, it's absurd people are forced to wait, I've finished it before the Pro arrived but for new players it's absurd, it's clear they won't fix the issues with a week of work from the 1-2 people they allocated on this patch.

I timestamped it when he compares non RT mode with PSSR vs. standard TAA. Shimmering is very visible, in RT modes it's worse.

Looks like PSSR has the same behavior in all games but less problems when base resolution is higher. Clearly needs updates.
Theres room for improvement but in motion, not zoomed in, its not a huge issue.
But this discussion is about SH.

For racing game (all the time in heavy motion) it's obviously not a big issue. PSSR just works like that currently, combined with lumen and low resolution you have effect like in SH2.

This is good news. I'm playing Rise of the Ronin first while I wait(huge upgrade on Pro).

My experience with the pro has been excellent except for SH2. Some games have like oversized obviously giant improvements like Demon's Souls(that one is the best and I've tested most of the patched ones by now, it truely looks next gen and I found things about the game I never knew existed because of the new graphics) but SH2 was very underwhelming early on if it even had a patch yet at that point. Going from Demon's Souls, rebirth, hogwarts, ronin, tlou2, and horizon 2, then going to SH2 was like a huge letdown graphically after all the other games looking like PS6(no shit). Hogwarts had a much bigger lift than I was anticipating and it made me want to play it again. Even with no patch, using a VRR set, wukong was basically locked 60 or close to it, and "fixed" for me.
I even tested some last act shit(I'm trying to be vague here) in Wukong that may be a spoiler and no frame rate hit unlike how I recall it being on base PS5 a stutterfest.
Too bad I already beat most of these games.

Hahahaha

Its fucking reversed now.
Performance has onky shimmers or puddles and some aliasing but foliage is solid.

But quality now looks the same as performance before so quality is now way worse.

Take this shit back

I just booted it up so you better take my word for it

Interesting. You have the game so I believe you.

What did they do to the quality mode? From the video I seen on the performance mode at least. Look like there is increase in resolution but how did they make the quality mode worst?

Performance now looks much better with some distant edges flickering here and there. Me guessing they removed GI.

Quality right now has shimmer on all foliage, puddles and reflrctions. Thinking lumen GI is having issues?

Before quality was more stable so i have no idea what is going on and why

Correct!
Booted it up too.
I stopped playing on the regular PS5 just as you got your first melee weapon, stopped at the save point on the table next to the road.
If you go up to the road and turn right there's a building with a drain pipe on your left side. The drain pipe is flickering when standing still. In quality mode it's still flickering including the shadow of a power cord next to the drain pipe. Just standing still, not moving.
And it's not something you have to look for, it's super noticable.
On the regular PS5 that drain pipe or power cord wasn't flickering.

I really hope they do fix it eventually, for all we know they don't plan to patch it anymore.

Interesting. Remove GI? That can make the game look drastically different and I am not sure they did that.

What you describing much better on the performance is more than likely has to with resolution. More pixels to work with so the image is more stable.

Even when you paise the game in quality you can see the shimmers and flickers on the paused image

Yea. You are right. They somehow makes the quality mode more shimmering, but it looks substantial sharper than the performance.

And maybe you are right. Look like the lighting is different. Maybe they turned down GI further and increase resolution on the performance mode to deal with the shimmering.

Bro why the fuck can't they rectify clearly annoying shit like those leaves trailing like crazy. At first I thought they were magical butterflies, it looks so off.

This would've been a system seller for me as silly as that sounds. I wanted to hold off on further playthroughs on Quality this time but what a bummer. Game felt like shit on Quality on base PS5 and I assume this doesn't help.

Performance is now much better but begs the questiin where is the pro feature?
Whats the upgrade cuz i am not seeing it.

Again. Devs. If you are in a trial and error stage please include the base ps5 settings in the menu so i can actually play this game .

Imagine the most powerful console plays this game worse than the base version with no added noticable features.

Yea. Stellar Blade is the best example. I am sure there are more.

Well, I guess I'll start playing SH2 because if I wait for another Pro patch, I might be playing it in december/january.

Now it looks playable enough to me, will finally start this because if not I'll end up double dipping on PC.

You have disc version?

Disc version 1.0 is the best way to play on pro right now. I'm not sure about saves and potential bugs...

This is such a good point though. Both the benefits f discs and offering the original modes for users.

No i dont have the disc version.
Digital only.
But even then what a work around for something that looks perfectly fine on the base unit.

Oh well i'll wait a bit longer. Right now i am working on alan wake 2 so by the time i finished i hope sh2 has a final patch

They don’t even have the leafs fixed with DLSS, and try turning on some of the video filters like black and white or outline/posterize. The last one especially is a flickering mess even on base PS5.

I took pre and post patch footage of the main menu and starting area in regular, black and white, and outline/posterize, in both performance modes. I have to head out but I’ll compare more closely after.

Look at The Callisto Protocol’s pro patch, then look at this shit. What the fuck is happening? It appears there’s almost no benefit to playing this on Pro. Dev skill issue.

Edit: Better yet, make Bloober Team watch The Callisto Protocol on Pro, A Clockwork Orange style, so they’ll see where the bar is.

Lol. I think this game switch back from PSSR to TRS. Basically the ps5 version with higher res.

I might be wrong here but all the footages I watch point to this.
I wish that would be the case .

At least performance looks better but is missing quality mode features.

Lets be frank. This is not a very demanding game as most of it is indoors so no reason for the pro to at least have rt reflections in quality mode .

But there is no upgrade in visuals from base ps5

Biggest issue of previous patch was not exactly PSSR but lower resolution vs base version.
