NPD July 2012 Sales Results [Up3: 3DS Hardware Correction - 124K+]

why ? it's not like people will start buying new consoles in droves, next gen handhelds are already out and proof to that.

While I do think that there will be a smaller market for consoles in Gen4, I don't think that we can use sales of handhelds as evidence of this.

The rise of tablets and smartphones, alternate and/or streaming entertainment, and many other activities that are competing for increasingly more limited spare time are factors that I would argue before anemic Vita or flattening 3DS sales.

Unit ranges of 5,000 units on either side are usually deemed acceptable for analysis and discussion. Unless Sony and/or Nintendo publicly share specifics, those of us with the data cannot provide anything more than guidance and ranges.

I know it's frustrating.

If it weren't for people like you, jvm or Creamsugar I wouldn't even bother entering into these NPD threads. I really appreciate your contribution :)

home consoles don't have to compete with phones/tablets/ipods

By next year smart tvs with built in app center/android market could compete with/replace the traditional gaming console. Imagine if Apple announces some type of tv that can be synched with your Iphone/pad and access to all your apps?

The PSP Go had momentum?

(FWIW, the PSP Go is probably my favorite handheld of all time, closely followed by the Lynx.)

1 more unit sold then last month is positive momentum in PR spin land!

You're asking this in this thread of all places?

Well let's not forget the bigger picture of pricing. The ASP on the 360/PS3 are still miles away from the $99 tipping point that's been so important in the past and the Vita is clearly - setting aside 'value for money' on what's included - not considered a good deal at the current price by the mass market.

I'm a little puzzled why there hasn't been all that much in the way of price reduction on the 360 if next-gen machines are on the way.

They are giving it the PSPGo treatment. Eventually the PSPGo got a $50 price cut, but it was too late to regain momentum. The Vita needs a cut now, even if Sony will take a bigger loss on every unit sold. I think they aren't willing to do that just yet because they aren't confident enough that the software sales will bring them back in the black :/

Low hardware sales will mean less manufacturing meaning lower orders for components meaning higher prices for components thus giving Sony even less room for a price cut, I could see Sony waiting to see if COD and AC "save" the system before making any move on price though by then it will probably be too late

I'm wondering if they named it Vita because they knew how close its impeding death would be to launch?

Welcome beautful toddler, Madison Elizabeth, to the horde!
This was a Kaz project? News to me. Ken's supposed failure (PS3) will ultimately be looked at more favorably than Kaz's definite failure (Vita)

yeah, but we don't know how many ppl have migrated after this gen from consoles to phones, tablets, handhelds, or even PC. The way I see it we are in a shitty economy and stale FPS rehashes. My console purchases will shrink 2x next gen, due to lack of fresh ideas and money saving purposes.

Understandable. Now if only we had a more accurate range for DS and 3DS...

Well, knowing that two hints have already been given about those platforms:

** July NPD Prediction thread aggregate for 3DS was VERY close to actual
** 3DS and DS moved exactly the same number of units

You should be able to put together reasonably close numbers for discussion.

It comlements i feel.

The reason why handhelds hasnt adapted well unlike consoles is because consoles were already a good media and entertainment box aside from gaming.

Handhelds are only good for gaming but for the rest of the stuff ? its useless.

Yoshida seems like a great guy and all, but whoever was the main person in charge of the Vita project should be let go.

For people talking about how the new handhelds are different because they are effected by the iPad/smartphones you don't know that consoles aren't effect by those things either. Remember, the casual audiences has always been a huge backbone of the console industry. If they feel they can get good experiences with their iPads then that is not good for consoles either.

those apps would be part of apple ecosystem and therefore they should work on all their system, so they should be design with touchscreen in mind as their main control scheme.

while someone could argue that buttons are a thing of the past for gaming on the go i don't think anyone would say the same regarding home gaming.

With both units over 260K and having the same sell-thru...

~130.5 K ish for both?

I'd imagine people are waiting for the 3DS XL at this point, no?
i don't think news of revisions act like they do in japan where seemingly everyone knows about it, but there should be a small bump when it comes out. 50k more than this month, at least (especially with mario hitting same day).

but holy shit the vita. it's only gonna get worse than here. the ds never had a month this bad, and that thing was so close to dead.

You got some kind of serious math issue going on here.
You failed math, didn't you?
Yes, I realized that after.

I thought it didn't look right.
Real answer is 164,160.

I'd be more optimistic on the XL +Mario bump, possibly over 250k

You can't stop the 3DS. It already has incredible momentum going into Q3 with the US launch of the XL next weekend which will propel it even further. It's absolutely nothing short of amazing how Nintendo turned that console from dead to selling like gangbusters in less than a years time.

This is exactly the sort of plan Sony needs to get in to action to save the floundering Vita. Take a note from Nintendo's book, Sony.

Did this word take on a new meaning because from where I'm looking the 3DS is selling very mediocrely and Vita is just dead. The PSP and GBA all sold much better month that what the 3DS is doing.

Yeah, Nintendo should be disappointed if the 3DS doesn't do over 250k in August. I think it will though. The XL + NSMB2 combo should provide a healthy bump. And you have a wild card in Kingdom Hearts, which will be out for the entire NPD month of August.

The 3DS is "selling gangbusters" in the West now? LOL. Compared to the Vita, sure, but the sales of the 3DS are the very definition of disappointing.

unfortunately for every other platform holder is pretty useless take any note from nintendo's book. neither microsoft, sony or sega have/had first party games with the amazing selling power of 2d mario / mario kart.

anyhow i do not consider 3DS numbers "incredible momentum"... is doing just ok and it should be doing so much better. Nintendo still has to establish the 3DS in the west.

I think Mario will push it closer to 300k.

I wouldn't exactly call it incredible; more good. Still has a long slog to go. I think many expected the 3DS to be the top selling console this year every month when it launched.

August will be the test.

While sales have slowed significantly after a HUGE Q4 2011, there honestly hasn't been much to fuel hardware sales so far this year. Perhaps NSMB2 changes that, plus we'll see how the hardware revision does.

The vita was a very nice device...

in early 2011 when there was no $199 7" tablet and when the 3DS wasn't $80 less. Never mind that the DS can be had for $150 less and it had more than double the sales of the vita this month.

I've said before and I'll say it a thousand times more:

Handhelds are about one single thing - cheap fun.

I definitely exaggerated a bit. I own a Vita, so 3DS sales seem fantastic from where I'm sitting ;)
