NPD November 2011 Sales Results [Update 7: Skyrim, CoD Wii, PC Retail Sales Up 57%]

Launching the CoD Elite subscription service was one of the smartest things Activision has done IMO. It's going to keep that userbase "locked in", downloading every map pack and playing CoD all year round right up until the sequel. When Black Ops 2 (or whatever) comes out next year they'll go "Double XP for Elite members! Earlier unlocks!" etc and everyone lines up at midnight to buy the game and renew their Elite subscription.

I think Elite will be a key part of keeping the CoD franchise relevant/huge.

It could be but it's definitely too early to say that right now.

One aspect that needs to return for AC3 is the player-driven approach to assassinations. That's the one element that I sorely miss from the original game.

Yep, really made you feel like an assassin at work.

Regarding the numbers, I'm surprised PS3 came up second, kinda used to Sony underperforming. 360 is a monster as usual, 3DS selling surprisingly well when you consider the games out for it.
I'm glad Uncharted and Zelda managed to chart as well.

Is the OP messed up for anyone else?

I see this:

Total retail sales: $3 billion (+0.4%)
Total non-PC retail sales: $2.93 billion (-0.5%)
Total software: $1.74 billion (+16%)
Non-PC hardware: $982.4 million (-9%)
Non-PC software: $1.67 billion (+15%)
Accessories: $273.8 million (-34%)
~1.26 million
5. Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360) Ubisoft
6. Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2)** Electronic Arts
7. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3)** Sony - 900K (+70%)
WII - 860k (-32%)
3DS - 795k
NDS - 350k (-77%)

and the PRs.

Too high or too low?

I think everything is impressive minus Nintendo to be honest.

I actually expected more HW on their behalf.

i just wasn't expecting such high numbers for PS3 because Wii and 360 had such bang up Black Friday's. Apparently there IS enough money to support three systems, even though PS3 is an unequivocal financial disaster next gen they can come with something more conservative and co-exist even without #1 spot.

That is rather amazing in how the climate has adapted.

360 right at 31 million and likely to be somewhere shy of 33M at year end. Close to 40M by year end 2012 with a price cut. They push the next Xbox into 2013 360 will have no problems moving into 50M+ territory in the US, ala PS2 figures. Timing will be interesting for the next Xbox. Regardless, it will certainly hit the 40-50M range just a matter if they can push it a bit more once the next box is released. Heck of gen for MS and a far cry from the 15M original Xbox days. Just enough SW next year that I'm going to be ready for next-gen by year end, and hopefully they get it right on all fronts out of the gate.

Someone really needs to provide that Skyrim breakdown.

Huh? I doubt Battlefield will overtake Madden. Just look at BF3, that game was massively overshipped.
I thought EA claimed they already hit 8Milion? That would be roughly on par with Madden if true. Granted, whether the next year-version will repeat the feat is not certain, but EA is clearly going all out on marketing spend with this one.

Ubisoft also really chose basically the worst time slot ever for Rayman Origins. Could they choose a busier holiday season?

That's a bit misleading though, Nintendo DS is an established brand in 2011, which wasn't the case in 04-05. The sales for the 3DS are fine, but I don't see them ramping up the same way they did with the DS, I don't think the 3DS will ever sell 3 million in a month.

Brand momentum is rarely enough to carry a platform. It happened... what, twice in the entire industry?

I would bang a hot farmer!
I'm really interested in Rayman Origins but this truly was the worst time to release it as a retail game. By the time I pick it up in Feb/Mar I should be able to pick it up for $20.

Sad, but seen it coming. Horrible launch time, horrible marketing campaign; Rayman is no Mario when it comes to selling on name. I did my part, but I'm sure Ubisoft will see this as reason enough to continue playing it safe with their games.

Other than that, pretty good news all around. Nice seeing the 3DS turning around. As a launch day buyer, I'd been thoroughly disappointed with the system up until recently when Nintendo finally decided to start releasing some quality games.

EDIT: From the same article

Frazier also revealed that Sonic Generations was the 26th best-selling title of the month. No sales figure was quoted.

Hit 50M US in Jan of 09 so a couple a million more by now I'd say. One would have to go back and grab the data until the point in which NPD dropped the reporting then estimate out.
No, it didn't. PS2 is over 46 million in the US.

50 million was a Sony figure for North America.

I think you are messing some things.

The new gamers don't like yearly iterations of the franchises. We have seen this with EA games for example. They buy Just Dance games because they have new songs, but they are happy playing golf with a last year game. The old gamers are happy buying yearly iterations of the franchise and that's why the EA games sell very differently on the HD twins.

So Nintendo can try to sell one or two iterations of their franchise to everyone or try to sell five iterations of their franchise to the old gamers. I believe the first one is a better approach because they can add enough differences and not just new levels. They can sell them to a much larger pool of clients. And they can add the "new thing" the last console has.

On the other hand I think Nintendo needs the third parties. Yes their games sell like nothing else, but they can't keep a console alone. Becuase if they fail, Wii Music, they would need a very strong software to come back. But if they have the third parties, they can fail and the console won't dive.

Then someone's reporting really got it wrong.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-2-hits-50-million-milestone-in-us

With that said if that is the case Xbox should have no problem reaching that at this rate.
Yeah, they are wrong. Even the Gamasutra article to which they linked clearly says "North America".

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009...in-north-america-breaks-console-sales-record/

In December, PS2 officially broke the record as the first video game console in history to sell over 50 million units in North America

Could they have waited far to long to actually put out a Rayman game that isn't a port of Rayman 2? Exactly who was it aimed at I wonder.

Sonic Generations. I wonder if Sega feels they made a big mistake now not doing a Wii version considering the most success Sonic games have had this generation have been on the Wii. Having a certain vision is fine but from a financial point of view it always came off as a stupid decision not to do a Wii version and it still does.

Decline started in 2008....lol....

It did. As charlequin mentioned earlier, some of us were already talking about it back then. It was most obvious in Japan, where Nintendo should've dropped the price in 2008. U.S. was still strong in sales, but we saw the same reasons for the decline in Japan coming to U.S. i.e. lack of games. Third-parties didn't fill out the release list as they historically had for the winning console each generation (reasons why have been discussed ad infinitum) and Nintendo can't support a successful console by themselves long-term.

Animal Crossing and Wii Music also helped to sour the milk. :/

I'm not sure I'd say it's on fire. NDS did 1500k on its own last year. 3DS and NDS combined only did 1145k this year... and price is hardly holding back the 3DS.

Isn't it? Have we all forgotten the DS Lite? I'd wager that the Lite made up around half of the sales last year, and it was likely below $100 in most places.

Besides that, the market for the DS is likely very saturated, and it only has two system sellers. It's also extremely rare for a system to hit it's stride in its stride in its first year. I don't think it's fair to expect DS-like sales in for any system's first year.

its so bizare, they made a 3ds version which is similar in power to the wii so it cant have been that difficult to make a wii version

700k for Uncharted? Pretty disappointing for such a hyped up series. Microsoft and Nintendo has second tier franshises that easily sells over a million in their first month.

Can you name these MS second tier franchises that sell over a million in their first month?
