Lol. The mods had to add PS5 to the title.
Spit Take Lol GIF by Justin

There were two threads discussing the same game / topic that were merged together. The other (later) thread title included the PS5 information.

Sometimes when we merge threads together, we'll either choose to keep the title that has the most relevant information or edit the title to add the most up-to-date information.

Im pretty sure adamsapple adamsapple posted the same thread a minute earlier than me, so the merge is correct. I just happend to have the PS5 release window at the title

It’s as good as day 1. I consider the Xbox version as early access, where they check for bugs, so the PS5 version is nearly bug free.

But very surprised to not wait with the announcement until it has been released for XBOX, seems Microsoft gave up selling more consoles.

Hmm...

It was originally multi-plat, then MicroSoft bought Bethesda and then renegotiated to make it "exclusive" to Xbox and PC.

I remember this statement pertaining to that:

The terms of Disney’s agreement with Bethesda were renegotiated after Microsoft acquired the studio’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, for $7.5 billion in 2021.

Disney’s head of gaming, Sean Shoptaw, told Axios: With “Xbox still being one of the bigger marketplaces for games, we didn’t feel like we were going to be overly exclusionary. We felt like it’s still going to reach a broad set of folks, and we felt, financially and strategically for the game, that made sense at the time.”

Source.

(Bolded mine)

It took less than two years for these statements to no longer be true. I wonder if there was a fee involved in that renegotiation. If so, it would just be more money wasted by Phil in a very poor and now failed strategy

I do agree that PS5 announcement timing was strange

Maybe it's to increase conversation and hype around the game. Excluding an existing user base did not help in, for example, Starfield's case. It came out and was basically ignored by much of the PS and Nintendo user base. With this announcement, perhaps they hope to build excitement for the game - the addition of PS players increases the potential of that happening which, in turn, could lead to more sales overall.

I think if they wanted to maximize sells then go day one on PS5 or wait a month after release to announce the PS5 version.

Timing just felt odd here is our big Xbox game and the one more thing is it’s only a 5 months or so timed exclusive?

Not sure how to feel about this game. Glad its confirmed for PS5 as i grew up watching Indiana Jones movies multiple times, but melee combat in 1st person ends always being trash. On the positive side 1st person actually feels better for exploration and it seems the game direction has a big focus on that and puzzle solving. So still a wait and see, but from this trailer seems to be in the right direction to end up being a decent Indiana Jones game.

It's hard to tell without having knowledge of what's happening behind the scenes. I'd assume they stopped development of the PS5 version back when they renegotiated the contract with Disney to exclude PS. It's possible the PS5 version is simply behind schedule in terms of development compared to the Xbox and PC versions. It's also possible they want to keep some focus on Game Pass - FOMO in this case may cause people to dive in on initial release. It's seriously hard to tell with some of the decisions with Xbox lately. Although, to me at least, this particular decision comes across as a MS mandate - not a Phil one.

MS needs to hire a captain obvious.
To turn around bad sales by not having many exclusives doesn't mean you should double down on that tactic.

But really that's probably all they can do at this point.

Just release it on all platforms. No one is buying an Xbox due to a 6 month or whatever exclusive period.
The delay does allow Sony ponies to get away scott-free if the game is a dud. And the delay isn’t long enough for people to get an Xbox even if they really really want to play it (dozens.gif).

This also doesn't include the fact that *if* the PS5 Pro is unveiled in the next few weeks and is, indeed, stronger than it's specs seem to indicate due to PSSR, AI, etc.

You've not only got a scant few months of exclusivity, you're no longer the best console version available for the game. Strange, indeed, but it's clear they've changed stances immensely.

I still don’t believe this is a big deal as people are making it. When I saw Xbox buy Bethesda I said on the record these games would be multiple platform. When they bought Activision i doubled down as that is INSANELY expensive. Hell even if not at launch a few months down the road I said Elder Scrolls 6 can’t afford to miss PlayStation. Gamepass was never going to pay for that.

I think if you are an Xbox diehard I wouldn’t get worried until you see a Forza, Fable, Gears or Halo rumored to be coming to PS5. Unless it’s a version of one of those games that came out years ago.

It is however truly satisfying to see certain pundits on Twitter and Reddit swiftly humbled by what a lot of us already knew. And that is SALES PAY FOR GAMES. Explicitly 70 dollar sales. It was not realistic to expect such games to stay exclusive when Microsoft needs to pay back the buyouts.

Does anyone else kind of feel like it is pitiful at this point, why does Xbox just keep limping along on life support? Just go ahead and go full third party and stop this tongue-in-cheek nonsense of announcing games sporadically to avoid backlash. Everyone seems to realize the Xbox brand is dead at this point, why keep up the charade? Microsoft killed it with its own buffoonery, so why continue to pretend why that is not the case?

Somebody could explain to me why they HAD TO announce that Indiana Jones is coming to PS5 at THIS EVENT?

I can’t tell if you’re asking this or this is pasted from somewhere else but who really cares where it was announced. Personally I am glad it was announced so we don’t have to rely on rumors and shit from “insiders”.

It just is like a kick in the balls like at least wait a bit to announce that no? It really seems like xbox owners are a second thought now, and I don’t think Phil liked the direction either but here we are

As an Xbox diehard, the console hasn’t had exclusives for years so this doesn’t matter to me. I’ll also not care if the “holy trinity” games go over. One, those franchises are way past their prime, and two, same logic applies as any other exclusive.

I’ll care if they announce no more Xbox hardware is ever coming and if I want to play inXile or Bethesda or Obsidian or Playground games on console, I’ll have to use my PS5 and use its UI and network and controller. That will suck.

I wonder why?🤔

I din't think this news was going to cause so many meltdowns. at this point they should have know better...but well, it seems the vail of delusion is finally going away.

When I talk about exclusivity I mean console exclusives. And you are right Halo and their other properties did fall off. But they could be potentially making a comback with Fable and the new Gears going back its roots. Will that get me to buy a Xbox? Probably not(looking at building a PC myself) but it will absolutely matter to some people. Especially playing them on game pass when you can get games like Cod for “free”

Now if those games go? It’s fucking over

But I expect every game from Bethesda or Activision to be coming to PS5 at a later date or day 1 moving forward. This is a be careful what you wish for tale. Activision costing 70 billion and Xbox underperforming was a perfect storm

Bethesda Games studios is gradually shifting over to releasing on PS5, DOOM is the first day and date one. I suspect everything is day and date after Indy.

Starfield will probably coincide with the next big expansion after the one releasing soon.
Dang I forgot about Doom. Odd that it’s day and date and not a few months later like Indy ? What is the strategy here?

I think it's just a matter of timing.

The shift to PS5 development at MS happened earlier this year. The team at Machine Games is working hard to just get it out on Xbox and don't really have the time to get it on PS5 yet because they weren't up to speed on it earlier in the dev cycle.

Again, the strategy with Doom onward is basically releasing on PS5 day and date. This will happen with Blade, it will also happen with the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

I think so too. But to me it’s odd that they wouldn’t at least try the 6 month tactic. Squeeze a few extra Xbox sales here or there. Sales must be so dismal they don’t want to piss off us playstation users

Microsoft doesn't care about getting more Xbox sales. They don't make money on them anyways and it's sort of a no-win proposition.

They care about having games that make an impact and are relevant to a wide audience, which they cannot do by leaving out PS5

They have to be waiting for this generation to end. This gen they are "committed" to the Series S|X, but it's been obvious all these are hints that they are moving away from consoles. While they could have some kind of hardware announcement for next gen, it's not going to be a next xbox.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft announces a hybrid to compete with Nintendo, since they weren't able to beat Sony, with their mentality being that it would leave Sony alone while everyone will want a hybrid. Remember that Microsoft never does their own thing, they always chase after what's successful only to be late and do it not-as-good or worse (not a fanboy statement, because it's mostly true).

That is a good point. I am still not sure if I can believe the next Fable or Gears is coming to PlayStation anytime soon. But.

It is wild to think that XBOX probably gets more out of me staying on PlayStation and paying 70 for black ops 6, Doom and Indy. Rather than me buying a Xbox Series and subbing to gamepass. Even though I would be in the Xbox ecosystem it’s less money. What a mess

I don't think its strategically bad, depending on where the focus now is. They suddenly make the game a much bigger headline due to the PS5 announcement. And in doing so creates an awful lot of excitement/interest. At the expense of their own console fan base, sure. But they suddenly get all of the PS customers interested in it. The series consoles clearly aren't the main priority anymore.
I don't think so.

Actually, I think this lessens the appeal of the game, and any Xbox game in general.

They started porting to PC to increase software sales. I'm sure it did to some minute level, but it didn't stop the bleeding. In fact, it accelerated the overall decline, which then led to Gamepass, which has now led to this. This won't be any different. Not least of which because the game itself looks mediocre.

Right now being Xbox Exclusive is a bad omen so announcing that it's coming to PS5 before it crash & burn is the smartest move.

This is survival & Xbox is about to be a better place once all the over the top fanboys move on but sadly they will return when the new Xbox comes out but hopefully Phil Spencer & Greensburg won't be giving them virtual high-fives & associating with them this time around.

The problem is Phil made it a big deal when they told Bethesda to axe all development on PS5 Starfield and when they paid Disney for exclusivity for Indiana Jones.

Money they utterly wasted because in the time since they paid that money for exclusivity, they imploded so bad they have no choice but to go multiplatform.

Yeah its absolutely a loss of face. They even announced the PS5 version as an encore during the show. When he hints at another bonus, you'd think it will have an extra, or perhaps a demo shadow drop. But its a fucking PS5 version lol. He announced it as some sort of a victory.

This is being decided by the same exec who internally wanted to buy the entire videogame market, and wanted to lock games on his platform. In the end its all business, but you can see how easy they can sway.
